View Full Version : South Murderkill: Best city name or worst city name?

So, I was browsing around TV Tropes, specifically the "I Don't Like The Sound Of That Place" article, when I stumbled upon this glorious gem of a city name.

South Murderkill (http://archives.delaware.gov/markers/kc/SOUTH%20MURDERKILL%20HUNDRED%20KC-26.shtml)

This is, in my opinion, objectively the worst or best name for a city either. Of course, I had to rephrase the thread title to make sure that I didn't seem like a psychopath.

So, my real question to the Playground is; South Murderkill: Best city name or BEST city name? :smalltongue:

And of course, while this thread is still up, feel free to offer up the names of other hilarously evil-sounding city names.

Why would anyone want to live in a place called South Murderkill?
And why is it "South" Murderkill anyway? Is there a North Murderkill?

Somehow, that's a lot more imposing than North Murderkill, know what I mean?

South Murderkill: Best city name ever, or best city name possible?

Obviously, I like it. Hell, I'd live there, if it wasn't in Delaware (I'm violently opposed to the weather).

Yes. Yes there is. South just sounds more dangerous, you know?

not evil but my absolute favorite city name for some reason is St. Canard.

I like this quote:

Formerly part of Murderkill Hundred, originally called Motherkill Hundred, kill meaning creek in Dutch.

I just love how they carefully explain how the "kill" in the name is actually just a zany translation.

The "Murder", presumably, is because of how they murder everyone who goes there.

Hmm. It is pretty awesome. Thank you, Silly Dutchlanders.

Yeah.

I mean, I don't know why it's more imposing, it just is.

Maybe because there's always a North whatever place in the world, whether it be a country, town, or city, but Murderkill is unique by being South?

But does the city live up to its name? If it does, then I don't want to live there, no. I don't want to live there anyway. And "Murderkill Hundred"? Sounds like a serial killer's code.

Honestly, "Motherkill Hundred" is even worse. Sounds like some sort of raider colony from a crappy 80s movie.

And why is that bad, necessarily?

Although South Murderkill could give it a run for it's money in time.

I'm rather fond of two towns just outside of Dublin named Kill and Swords, respectively. In both of those cases, it's the English approximation for a Gaelic word, but with added hilarity.

It's definetly cooler than the name of where I live. Redbridge. Go on, guess what it's named after, I dare you ¬_¬ :smalltongue:.

Just remembered the actual neighbourhood I live in is named Gants Hill. Because it's on a hill. That was owned by a guy called Richard le Gant.

I like to imagine the renaming went something like,

"Motherkill? That's offensive, we have to change it!"

"Uh...okay, sure."

And then the next day there was a giant sign saying, "WELCOME TO SOUTH MURDERKILL"

EDIT: Also, there should totally be a band called South Murderkill.

Not only do I love the name, I've started looking for jobs in the area.

P.S. There are a lot!

That's a pretty awesome name.

Absolutely boring name: Centralia, Pennsylvania. Renamed after it's previously boring name, Centreville, PA, was shot down because it was already taken.

However, Centralia's claim to fame is that the ground underneath the city is literally burning. A fire hit an exposed coal vein and FOOM; the coal's been burning underneath the town for over 40 years.

I wonder what the public's response would be if there was a mass murder in South Murderkill? Would make for a pretty weird headline.

Populace Shocked by Murders in Murderkill

A spree of killings in South Murderkill last week "startled the community", according to Mayor Cyrus Kottic.

I lived a few miles from the per capita murder capital of the country for one year. There were a 100 people, until there was a triple murder. Hard to beat a 3% annual murder rate.

Well the best possible city name is in fact 'Memphis', so perhaps South Murderkill is the worst.

Much as TV tropes is a tab clicking browser killer for most people, the Weird NJ site linked from that article is doing the same to me.

[Above linked town] had the roadside attraction of a wooden life-size humpback whale head, however after many years it was destroyed at the beginning of the 2006-2007 winter.

This cracked me up for some reason.

I'd live in South Murderkill for 3 reasons.
1. When people ask where I live I can say "South Murderkill" and that is bound to strike up some form of conversation

2. I can put it as my location on websites like giantitp and people will think I'm lying when I'm telling the truth:smallbiggrin:

3. Whenever I tell anyone I live there, people will think I'm messing with them and it I can play with their minds.

...according to the website, this place has a "long history" *snicker* oh, being immature is far too easy
