Hello there, welcome to the world of Let's Play Pokemon Yellow Version! My name is TheDarkFiddler!

Ah, Pokemon Yellow, the third main series Pokemon game released in the United States of America, after Red and Blue. A great game, combining the already great games with the pretty good anime. This version had tons of fixes, and introduced happiness into the series, which has been a major part of the games since then.

Anyway, I'll be playing it. I'll be taking screenshots. I'll be narrating things. It'll be fun. And do you know why it'll be fun? Because you're gonna help me! You'll give me nicknames for Pokemon, tell me where to go, and just be helpful people. In return, I'll be entertaining. Hopefully.

So, updates will be daily, unless something comes up, starting when we get a good suggestion/consensus on the name of the main character, rival, and starter Pikachu. I've already got a personality planned, but if you think you've got a great idea, tell me!

Here's to a hopefully excellent Let's Play!I promise the Let's Play will be better than this post.

That's a bit of a flaw of mine, I use a lot of screenshots. I've cut out alot of the dialogue ones by simply writing it instead of posting all the screenshots, and I'm no longer showing the walking (in my first LP I did that, I have no idea why). When the dialogue eases up, so will the screenshots, a bit.

Another problem that won't show up in this one is that I for some reason showed every move in every battle. I learned a lot since then.

If so, that's Nintendo's fault, not mine. The way they have it, the dialogue sometimes gets split between boxes in ways such as:

I think it was a technical fault. If that's not what you're talking about, please explain more, as I am confused.

Psychic being OP was the only reason Butterfree was any good in Gen I. The fact that it could use Psychic attacks.

Also, if you're thinking of a cheap type, ghosts are also good against psychic and are only weak to themselves in return. So the only reason Gastly, Haunter and Gengar are Ghost/Poison are because they would be overpowered if they weren't.

Not on that crap attack stat, it didn't. Jolt was a counter, but not because of Pin Missile. Snorlax, Zapdos, Jolteon, and Moltres comprised most of the best non-psychic counters; Snorlax was just as good as any psychic.

Nah, Para gets evolved the same way any not-very-combat-worthy poke does; you let it lead the fight and then switch in your favored ridiculously overpowered pokemon to do the actual combat. Or you use/give it the Exp Share, although that's a lot more cumbersome in the first generation games, since you have to cut your team down to just your overpowered pokemon and the trainee to make it efficient.

-The real-time feature
-Multiple regions, as Crystal
-All the new wireless DS multiplayer features, EXCEPT the underground
-TEAM ROCKET (not some stupid new team)
-Retro trading as Crystal (not post Poke League migration as DS games)
-FEWER...FREAKING...LEGENDARIES (there are what now, 25?)

Excepting points 1, 7, and 8. 1 and 8 simply aren't possible (the items and Pokémon already exist. You can't make them un-exist. :smalltongue:), 7 takes extra encoding to ensure backwards compatibility, even more so than in GSC. (By the way, there's 35 legendaries, plus 15 pseudo-legendaries.)

Depends what moves really; since you can TM Solarbeam anyway I don't see the point in waiting for it with Bulbasaur. With Mudkip's Hydro Pump (no charge/recharge), which you CAN'T TM and which is the third-most powerful water move in existance (and the first one ever with power over 100), I'd agree to wait.

Of course the best option is to get a female starter, learn the move, breed with a ditto, then evolve the egg pokemon. :smallbiggrin:

Actually, you don't even need to trade a Pokemon with Cut. You can get through Rock Tunnel without ever beating Lt. Surge, which means you can technically beat Gym Leaders 3-6 in any order you want. This guy chose to beat Koga first because the Soul Badge allows you to use the Surf HM. With Surf, he could reach Cinnabar, which he beat 4th. From there he just picked an order and beat the remaining leaders.

The only Gym Leaders you have to beat in a certain order are Boulderbadge and Cascade Badge 1st and 2nd and Earth Badge last.

Well, you did that one with Chernobyl. You could say the next one is done on the perspective of the other Pokemon plus Chernobyl, even if they are on their Pokeballs. Probably resenting the fact that Chernobyl is always out and walking, and providing commentary.

Think of it as a...well, a MST3K episode but with the Pokemon offering commentary. Or better: Rifftrax, which is almost the same. Make them actually happy when they appear, and stuff. Ash can be present always on-screen, but that doesn't mean the Pokemon on his party can't be doing commentaries while on the Pokeballs, while dissing Chernobyl because he gets also a lot of showtime.

In addition, if you were to add another pokemon, I would highly suggest Eevee, evolved into something. This would create great moments with your rival, IMHO. However, Chernobyl is a great character... its too bad he's getting useless in combat. If this were 4th Gen, he'd have a Light Ball and he'd be kicking ass and taking names. My current Pearl playthrough has a level 39 Pikachu. It basically one-hits whatever it damn-well pleases with its light ball equipped.

Indeed, Jolteon is a mighty fine choice if you manage to, somehow, get your hands on one. There's several reasons it's one of the best Eevolutions there is, and for good reasons:

1) Single Electric-type, which has weakness mostly to Ground types, but Ground types are pretty much weaksauce. Meanwhile, you get an edge against Water and Flying types, two of which are pretty common.

2) Double Kick. I should not stress why this is good enough. Good against Rock, good against Normal...and much later on, with other generations, good against Steel too. That's striking three more weaknesses there.

3) Pin Missile. Not the best skill there is, but it's a good one against Psychics, given that they're oddly weak against Bug Pokemon. Also good against Grass Pokemon, so that's now 2 more weaknesses struck.

4) Speed. Just...speed. You're pretty sure to go first, nearly always. With Carbos and EV (if available), you're pretty sure to make Jolteon always have the first hit. If not, then Quick Attack. Or, for speed-abuse, Agility. Which, oddly enough, it learns well.

I could say that the lack of decent physicals don't help it much, but that shouldn't be troubling since you'll need something pretty strong against Psychics later on.

If not...well, Snorlax. Big, big. BIG darn tank. Will make sure to make your life happy. Alas, not as good without Snore and Leftovers, but that's how things go.

I finished Pokemon Blue with the following team:
Charizard - Flamethrower, Fire Blast, Cut, Slash.
Blastoise - Hydro Pump, Surf, Ice Beam, Water Gun.
Venusaur - Razor Leaf, Cut, Solar Beam, Sleep Powder.
Zapdos - Thundershock, Drill Peck, Thunder, Fly.
Alakazam - Psychic, Recover, Psybeam, Teleport.
Dragonite - Strength, Horn Drill, Dragon Rage, Hyper Beam.

After beating the Elite 4, Mewtwo replaced Alakazam.
Mewtwo - Swift, Psychic, Psywave (I think), Recover.

The first three are already covered for you. Zapdos won't be until later so until then, either throw a stone on Pikachu (no pun intended), or grab either a Magnemite or a Voltorb (Magnemite has better Defense and Attack, but Voltorb has better Speed, HP and Special).

Alakazam is basically just Kadabra with increased stats, so you're fine there.
Dragonite will be quite hard to get considering that the only place you can grab Dratini is Safari Zone, although Dragonite isn't essential, as you could probably use your Ratticate instead.

Elite 4 1 can be covered by Charizard and your Electric type.
Elite 4 2 can be covered by Venusaur, Blastoise and Kadabra.
Elite 4 3 can be completely annihilated by Kadabra.
Elite 4 4 can be beaten by your Electric type and Blastoise (due to Ice Beam).

Champion is another easy one:
Blastoise and Venusaur can handle Sandslash.
Alakazam is a toughie, but I went Alakazam v.s Alakazam and won.
Exeggutor is a wuss against Charizard.
Cloyster (if he chose Jolteon or Flareon) is Electric-bait.
Ninetales (if he chose Jolteon or Vaporeon) goes down the drain to Blastoise's hydropower.
Magneton (if he chose Vaporeon or Flareon) is a different story. You'll need something with a ground attack (Earthquake?).
Flareon is more Blastoise-chow.
Vaporeon is Thunder-chow.
And Jolteon is Ground-chow.
Alternatively, you could just Kadabra-nuke Jolteon or Magneton.
Just my opinion. Yellow isn't all that different to Blue and Red.

As for where to go, do Pokemon Tower LAST, after Fuschia and the Dojo. Then your rival will end up about 10 levels below you...and when you fight him again in Saffron, he'll have suddenly gained a bunch of levels in about a day:smallbiggrin:.

If you replace Chernobyl, I recommend using Snorlax or Hitmonlee (or Dragonite if you can get one). Personally, I think you should have him secretly ally with Team Rocket and spy on Ash from the PC. Once he beats Giovanni the final time, Chernobyl should just give up and hide in the PC box.

Zapdos should be named as the Native American spirit of thunder, which most times it's merely called Thunderbird.

Moltres should be called Phoenix. Definitely Phoenix. Not Suzaku, since that's left for Ho-oh.

Incidentally, what moves do your Pokemon know? I noticed a lot more KOs than I would expect from the stats, maybe the moves are just stronger in Yellow...

I've cut out alot of the less important stuff, which in battles comes down to almost anything that isn't one of the Pokemon fainting or a new Pokemon being sent out.

I don't remember Sliph being so hard. Probably because I do it after I do some other gyms which are harder.

Neither do I, but this was so much easier than the last time I played with my Pokemon at level 35+. Weird.

I actually think those are good considering the game and levels, especially Willis and Donatello. I normally never TM anything until we're at the Elite Four and I need optimization. Which is only because I end up beating them while 10 levels below the Champion... :smallbiggrin:

Actually, your movesets are pretty good, your Donatello has pretty much the same moveset as my Blastoise I had in Blue (Level 89. Surf, Ice Beam, Water Gun, Hydro Pump, hmm, now that I think about it, a physical attack might have been alright, maybe Skull Bash or Bite), Godzilla also has pretty much the same style of moveset as my Charizard from Blue (Level 83. Cut, Flamethrower, Fire Blast, Slash, it did have Rage at one point), Chiasaur also has pretty much the same moveset as my Venusaur (Level 83. Cut, Razor Leaf, Solarbeam, Sleep Powder), I never used Pikachu much or Primeape and Ratticate at all but I'd guess their movesets are as good as they'll get.

I went to the Safari Zone, trying to look for the teeth of an old Warden. I found a Chansey, a very rare Pokémon that's also awesome. When I was about to capture it, I got a message from my Pokédex that my holding box was full. I had to run away. F my life.

Another fun fact: When I tried abusing Save States to catch Articuno (because seriously, it would have killed my entire team otherwise), the Poke Ball continuously 'missed'. When I forgot to save state, I caught it on my first try. That's the one I pictured.

He's doing the areas in weird order, going back the other gyms and such will be easy as is. I've never set foot inside the Seafoam Islands before getting all 8 badges at the least.

Looking at his levels, if he fights Blaine he'll be under by a few levels against most of his random mooks. So I was just saying, it might be worth it to spend a little time gaining a level on the lower level guys.
