Ok here’s the deal; I plan on running a tabletop game via laptop. I know that there are a lot of problems associated with laptops at the gaming table, but fortunately most of them are already solved. The place I plan on holding these games does not have internet access. So I won’t have to worry about a distraction there. However this also leads to an interesting problem. I won’t have access to an online dice roller sight. I thought about just rolling dice the regular way, but unfortunately I don’t think rolling them on the keyboard is going to work out so well.

So I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good (free) dice roller program that does not need Internet access to work? I already let my fingers do some walking and came back with a few, but I’m a bit leery of downloading any programs without anyone’s recommendations.

Returner Games has a pretty decent one that I've had for about 4 years. They put out a Final Fantasy RPG but their dice roller works for any system.

Its the Win.Dice program.

hey that's cool, simple and not at all fancy, but it works and seems to be random enough for my tastes.

I made one in Java, but then tried to get fancy and broke it. :(

Real small with lots of functions. Includes probabilities, and shows the curves on a graph if you want.

Just remember the modifier glitch when rolling different sizes of dice.

I haven't really had a problem yet as I don't roll many different dice at once that all need modifiers, so it hasn't been anything that has given me problems in the past few years. But just in case kep it in mind IF you need to add modifiers when rolling multiple types of dice at the same time (2d8+1d6, etc)

Good luck with it. (Some say it helps with DCs cause you can convert it to a percentile roll or just percentage to tell how hard something really is in a flash with the => function to tell someone if something is really hard or really easy.)

Here is a good one CrystalBall lite.

It has a very large selection of macro buttons. You can use algibra expressions. IT has a chat window that shows dice rolls and IMs. There is a privat roll and message setting. Im only using the free demo and im happy with just using that.

Oh it will prompt you to buy a full version every 20 rolls or so, just click not now and continue playing. It also has a prompt for updates. Yes free updates for the demo.

I prefer to use excel.

=RANDBETWEEN(1,6) is 1d6
=RANDBETWEEN(1,6)+RANDBETWEEN(1,6)+RANDBETWEEN(1,6 ) is 3d6
=RANDBETWEEN(1,20)+5 is 1d20+5

There are even ways to have excel drop the lowest but this will require extra cells that you have to hide.

You can make an entire character sheet that rolls for you every time you hit F9

Or if you are DMing. You can create skill lists for each player and roll all of their spot checks at once.

If your excel gives you an error with the randbetween commands the helpful paper clip guy can help you fix the error by adding a statistics package to excel.
