I am going to play a gray elf generalist wizard soon. Is there a prestige class that helps generalist wizards. I know mage of the arcane order is there but with the guild thing it can be difficult.

There's a Grey Elf racial substitution level in RotW that will help you. I forget exactly what it does though. Perhaps someone could shed light on the issue?

I don't think there's any PrC which specifically helps generalists more than specialists - more usually, a powerful PrC would require you to specialize as a prerequisite - but there are plenty of solid ones open to you. Archmage and Loremaster are obvious core options. Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil, though abjuration-focused, doesn't require you to be specialized.

It gives you one extra slot of your highest level.

A lot of PrCs help you regardless of your focus. Though Incantatrix costs you a school, it's still amazing. Other than that, Fatespinner (all but the last level), Mindbender (1st level), Loremaster, Archmage, Geometer, Divine Oracle (though it's obviously divination-focused; works for a generalist too though), Sacred Exorcist, Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil and company give you a solid choice as far as PrCs go.

Nothing "übergeneralizes" you, but stuff like Fatespinner, Loremaster, Archmage and Geometer has no ties to any school whatsoever and even Mindbender, Divine Oracle and Initiate are only loosely tied to theirs (Initiate slightly more-so).

Also, Races of the Wild has the Elven Substitution Levels; two of them (the level 1 & familiar upgrade) are fairly good and one of them is specifically for Elven Generalists, giving you an extra slot at your highest level.

The Rainbow Servant prestige class can "übergeneralize" you, giving access to cleric spells.

And then you take it with Beguiler, Dread Necromancer or Warmage, and the fun begins.

It gives you one extra slot of your highest level.

And an extra spell known every level.
