anybody know of one? I need one for my D&D world.

(more of a world builder than a map builder but a map builder would be nice too.)

Gametable is a pretty good map builder. The last update fixed a lot of the bugs, but it still has a few. This should be the latest version http://sourceforge.net/projects/gametable/

Myth Weavers has a dungeon generator, but I find I need to make quite a few changes to get rid of blind loops and the like to get something that makes sense to adventure in. Playing around with the settings may help.

Back in the day (I mean waaay back), I used to play around in Bryce a lot, creating islands and continents. My goal was to eventually create an entire planet, but my computer just couldn't handle the peril of even one large island (admittedly with castles, houses, trees and dungeons).

One of these days I'm going to get the new version of Bryce (http://www.daz3d.com/i/software/bryce?_m=d) and put it through it's paces. Need to upgrade to an Intel-based mac though, so that's at least two years off. :smallsigh:

Here's some of the stuff I did literally 10 years ago while avoiding going to class. The program is easy to learn and with a good computer I'm sure you'll be able to create some amazing stuff to add flavor to your games:

Forgotten Temple Outside View (http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w219/mwellenstein/Graphics/3D%20Art/NightCathedral.jpg)
Forgotten Temple Inside View 1 (http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w219/mwellenstein/Graphics/3D%20Art/CathedralInside.jpg)
Forgotten Temple Inside View 2 (http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w219/mwellenstein/Graphics/3D%20Art/CatherdralView2.jpg)

Phoenix Ark (http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w219/mwellenstein/Graphics/3D%20Art/ocnwlkL.jpg) (for my Immortal game)
Shadowen Arrives in the Dominions (http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w219/mwellenstein/Graphics/3D%20Art/dominL.jpg)(Immortal)

Hovertank and Walker (http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w219/mwellenstein/Graphics/3D%20Art/mechtnkL.jpg)
Hovertank Night (http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w219/mwellenstein/Graphics/3D%20Art/tank1L.jpg)
Uneasy Truce (http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w219/mwellenstein/Graphics/3D%20Art/truceL.jpg)

Unfortunately a lot of my island renders died with my old computer and I haven't been able to find backups. Landscape aren't too hard in Bryce and you get amazing control over the features without a very high learning curve. If you can get a demo version, I definitely recommend trying it out.

If you're not looking to make your maps pretty, I've been working on a tool that may be of some use to you. Dungeoneer (http://gm.sagotsky.com/?p=161) is an app I'm writing for making D&D maps. It's text based. If you've ever played Nethack or Angband, that's the kind of map it will make.

I've heard good things about THIS (http://www.jezelf.co.uk/tutorials.htm) online tutorial for making world maps in Photoshop. I haven't personally tried it, but if you've got time and access to the software, it might be worth giving a shot.

I've used it, & it rocks hard. The tutorial recommends downloading a freeware program called Wilbur, which I can't recommend highly enough. It's awesomesauce.

I've really enjoyed AutoRealm (http://autorealm.sourceforge.net/) for map-making. It's good for everything from huge world maps to dungeons.

Well, I can't take ALL the credit. I heard about it from... someone else I don't remember. One of the WotC folks, I think, or maybe an RPG reviewer lor someone like that mentioned it on Twitter a few weeks ago, and I check it out. I don't have Photoshop, so I didn't try it, but I bookmarked it just in case.

I haven't tried tried the Wilbur thing it mentions, as Zeta Kai pointed out, but I may if I ever actually get around to, you know, making a world.

I'll be honest, I just use photoshop. It's not specifically designed for this sort of thing, but it's so popular that you can find textures and patterns for pretty much anything.

I just make a grid, draw out the basic shape of the rooms, and then look for neat looking patterns for floors and walls and things.

I thoroughly intend to start using Dwarf Fortress to generate both worlds and dungeons. It'll be good.

But probably not pretty as such. :)

I've considered generating a map of a world, and generating a dungeon in Dwarf Fortress, and then sending it to a cartographer friend to make pretty. I decided that was probably considered cruel.

trying to make it look a little prettier than that.

IT would technicly be gamer folk art. That has a rustic nerd beauty all its own.
