View Full Version : Best Single Comic

To distract myself from my severe OOTS Joneses, I'm posting my first new thread. What's Rich's best single comic in the OOTS on-line comics? Where do you see the best drawing, plotting, characterization and overall OOTSness?

My candidate: 610 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0610.html), where five separate plot lines are pulled together. One (Belkar) is a pure hallucination, one (Roy) a "conversation" the listener can't hear, one with two thugs gloating over the nearly-dead Haley, one with unnamed NPCs in the Thieves' Guild, and one with an unnamed priest of Loki nearly panicking. And the punchline - the password for the Mark of Justice curse - is what the entire series is about, the evolution or death of characters.

Your picks?

If you're talking the best single, standalone comic, it's definitely 301 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0301.html). The only strip that contains a complete, self-contained story. Plus, it's friggin' hilarious.

It's hard to pick...they just keep getting better and better. I think that this one (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0657.html) just might take the cake...I've seen a lot of villainous rants, but this one just might be the best.

"Power. Power equals power." "And they died happily ever after." Gives me chills every time I read it.

It's really tough to pick, but I'll go with this one (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0560.html); it's got a really high density of jokes, they're all funny, and that last panel just makes me laugh like hell because it's both perfectly set up and totally random, an impressive feat.

There's some tough competition, especially with all the recent excellent strips with Vaarsuvius on the island / fighting Xykon. But 393 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0393.html) remains my favourite. It helped that I was listening to just the right song when I read it, and now I associate one with the other so they sort of just meld into one big dramatic awesome experience.

Xykon's Final Words to Roy (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0442.html)

The way Xykon stoped to question Roy's motivations for going after him was just a great moment for me (A moment that was repeated quite nicely when V went after him). But the utterly effortless way he put down Roy once he finaly got annoyed enough to stop toying with him was realy my first glimpse at what a badass Xykon could be.

Such a tough decision -- 657 (A Second Chance) (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0657.html) nearly edged it out, but I think I shall have to second Starscream and go with 659 (Flight of the Phylactery) (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0659.html).

This one was a very neat (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0183.html)culmination to the funniest mini-arc of the strip. And this one (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0568.html) was sheer poetry. But this one (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0654.html), right here? Made of awesome.

I am legitimately surprised that no one has mentioned 445 yet. While it isn't hands down the best, I think it wins out if you listen to "O Danny Boy" at the same time, so you can get a sense of how Elan's song would actually go.

That's probably my second favorite. It was hilarious for me because I was seriously listening to James Galway's beautiful instrumental version of O Danny Boy when I first read it, and since there were no lyrics I started over and put in Elan's. It's a great memory for me.

But my favorite? Xykon's "Power Equals Power." I'd known he was powerful and badass, but I still thought of him as lovable until that comic, when I realized in my heart, "Xykon's not just badass Evil with a Capital E. He's scary." It was the first time I'd been afraid of Xykon. it was beautiful.
