as the title says, would a 12 hole be too complicated for a beginner

I'm sure you could learn on it, but it would be easier with a 4 or 5 hole one.

It probably depends on what you're good at.

On one hand, the 12 hole ocarina is going to be a lot more difficult in terms of memorizing the different patterns for different keys.

However, an ocarina with less holes will depend more on your control of the airflow and correct embouchure- plus, I'd imagine you'll have to do a lot more partial covering of holes in order to get sharp, flat, or even basic notes.

From what I hear, getting a correct embouchure is far more problematic than memorizing a few different fingerings, though embouchure has always come naturally to me.

Still, I'm far more familiar with more complicated instruments... generally, an ocarina is probably going to be relatively easy to play no matter what one you pick, and correct embouchure probably plays slightly less of a part.

I have one, and I've found it works pretty easily. It's just a matter of memorizing which finger positions make which notes, and then having the right breathing. Did yours come with a little blue instruction phamphlet?

Ah, that's not the same as mine. At the risk of sounding puerile, mine's bigger. But if yours came with that pamphlet, it should show what holes to cover for what notes and some songs you can try.
