View Full Version : It's hard to make up usernames

So, you're doing an English project, and as part of it you're putting in a made-up internet forum debate thing. You've got a couple of characters, even written most of the posts, but you're lacking one important detail - the posters' usernames. And you hit a mental blank the size of Antarctica.

It's impossible! I tried just going onto the fora I frequent, and then realized that not many other fora have so many puns/references in them, so I tried making them up and ended up just using memes with numbers after them.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Just rob some off some site with loads of users... can't think of one off hand, but I'm sure inspiration will come.

You could use names that are derived from characters from popular culture, such as from Star Trek or use other stereotypes people often identify with.

Use Xs, random geek culture references, and "cool" words.

See, the point to most of this is so many names appear totally mindless, so don't think hard.

I've had that problem. I was trying to think of an unused username where I'd be able to use it on most sites I go to (because I use general usernames like Guru, which is usually taken), and it took me forever to get one.

Just grab a random thread on this site and use the names from it?

I just go with something defining about me usually. Something from a book I've read recently or something.

For instance, my username here is my joint favourite battlemech from Battletech.

I used the name (An) Original Name for a bit, and it worked. Haven't used it an a while, though.

Why not things that have something to do with popular culture, like:

sasuNarulove98

EdGuy57XX
xXJamieIsAwesomeXx

etc.

And make sure to make the capitalization and letter/number usage diverse. Some people capitalize the first letters of words. Some do not use capital letters at all. Some use completely random capitalization. Some replace parts of the name with 1337 or add letters/numbers to the end and beginning.

If you're writing a paper, I suggest you go with stuff that sounds like an actual name, or at least doesn't sound weird out of context. Try the following phrases:

"Do you know (name)?"

"Have you seen (name)'s latest post?"

If it sounds weird, like "Do you know hfiowjupw2?", then don't use it.

Get a list of animals (e.g., monkey). Get a list of adjectives (e.g., stinky). Combine animals with adjectives (Stinkymonkey).

There you go. A list of usernames.

Hehe, I like that one. It's moderately funny for a little while, but then you realize the person using it is hiding a bad personality under the clever name and forget her.

If you told us the nature of the belligerents, it would make it easier to name them.
