We Playgrounders have voted for women, villains, villainous organizations, and probably some more things, and now it's time for the machines to enter the spotlight. Nominate five of your favorite AIs, and then we'll vote for them. The nominees must be mechanical entities (i.e. created, not born) capable of independent thought. If the nominee is part of a series, there must be some aspect that separates it from its brethren.

I'll start by nominating the following (please use the same format as my nominations for your own):

HK-47 (Star Wars)
Bender (Futurama)
The Lord of Blades (Eberron)
Data (Star Trek)
K-9 (Doctor Who)

Nominees (60 and counting):

A
Aigis (Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3)
Aineko (Accelerando)
Amazon Femputer/Fembot (Futurama)
Antrax (The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara)

B
Bender (Futurama)
Bob (Tripping the Rift)
Boxbot (Gunnerkrigg Court)

C
Castle Hetrodyne (Girl Genius)
Cell (DBZ)
Church (Red Vs. Blue)
Clank (Ratchet and Clank)
"The computer that ran the city" (Logan's Run)

D
Daedalus (Deus Ex)
Data (Star Trek)
Deep Blue (Real Life)
Dingbot Prime (Girl Genius)
The Doctor (Star Trek)
The Doctor's TARDIS (Doctor Who)
Durandal (Marathon)

E
EPICAC (EPICAC)

F
Friend Computer (Alpha Complex, Paranoia)

G
Gary (Red vs Blue)
Gerty (Moon)
GLaDOS (Portal)

H
HAL 9000 (2001)
The Hendrix Hotel (Altered Carbon)
HK-47 (Star Wars)
Holly (Red Dwarf)

I

Kryten 2X4B-523P (Red Dwarf)

L

R
R2-D2 (Star Wars)
R. Daneel Olivaw (Asimov)
R. Dorothy Wayneright (Big O)
Robo (Chrono Trigger)
Robot (Gunnerkrigg Court)
Robot Devil (Futurama)
Rommie (Andromeda)

HAL 9000 (2001: A Space Odyssey, also its sequel 2010: The Year We Make Contact)
The Hendrix Hotel (Altered Carbon)
Gerty (Moon)
Aineko (Accelerando)
Masaq' Hub (Look to Windward)

Deliberately picking obscure ones here, though many may have seen Moon. HAL is hardly obscure, but too few people realize that he's a tragic and sympathetic character, hence my inclusion of his second credit.

Also! Can we clarify this now please? What do we mean by "favourite"? The one we think is the best character as a work of fiction? The one we like the most as a character, even if not the best written? The one we like the most as a person, which is to say, not the total bastards who you admire even while you hate them?

I initially thought I could nominate Junior/Rubedo from Xenosaga, but then I remembered that he was genetically engineered, not a Realian. Oh well, KOS-MOS will have to do in his place, then.

Dur-Dur-Dur-Durandal.

He ain't no slouch, pal.

We're talking a guy who, entirely on his own steam, goes from door opener to god, makes Destiny his errand boy, and turns an ancient AI into a pawn.

And he does it all with style and a heck of a sense of humor.

No courtesy to he who rhymes with psycho?

Sure, he went down like a punk, but he was up against Durandal, and that makes going down like a punk inevitable.

Just curious as to the reasoning.

And I'll add Marvin to the stack.

Petey (and by extention, the fleetmind) - Schlock Mercinary. Power of a god, most massive mind ever known, unwaveringly moral.
Winslow - Questionable Content. I don't like Pintsize too much, but the more innocent and trusting Winslow is just adorable.
Castle Hetrodyne - Girl Genius. OK, bit left field I know as it is a creation of Steampunk but it IS an Artificial Intelligence.
Robot - Gunnerkrigg Court. Re-assembled by Antimony to get Shadow2 back to the forest, Robot's history seems to be as much a mystery as the rest of the comic.
Boxbot - Gunnerkrigg Court. Boxbot is awful. Let this be confrimed when he looses.

True.

And Tycho is a massive $&*#.

Of course, I know I will be inevitably disappointed when Durandal gets the axe due to limited cultural penetration and a nagging feeling I could have done more on an informational front.

Castle Heterodyne - Girl Genius. OK, bit left field I know as it is a creation of Steampunk but it IS an Artificial Intelligence

I heartily endorse this nomination, but you forgot someone:
Dingbot Prime (Girl Genius)
- He's the R2D2 of steampunk. He's small, he can't talk, he can fix anything, and the fans love 'im to death.

Also:
Joshua/WOPR (WarGames)
- "How about a nice game of... chess?"

Edit Also:
Master Control Program (Tron)
- The Darth Vader of operating systems [insert Microsoft joke here]

R. Daneel Olivaw (various Asimov stories)
- Like Star Trek's Data, but with nice hair. And he's a detective. The really awesome stuff is spoilers.

R. Dorothy Wayneright (Big O)
- "I've got it! We'll take a creepy Gothic loli... put her in a noir setting... and turn her into a robot!" "Perfect!!!"

Well, huh. If ever there was a rule meant to be broken, that's the one. Now I need at least four more nominations to pad mine out. :smallamused:

To continue on:
Master Control Program (Tron) Moved to my earlier post for easy viewing.

BTW, just how "mechanical" do these have to be? How about beings that are organic, but still artificial? Like the replicants from Blade Runner, or Frankenstein's monster? Is an artificial mind the key point here?

As long as it's artificial and intelligent, it's allowed. Most of what is filed under the construct type in D&D fits this contest.

Pokedex (guess what, from Pokemon.)

I'm not that into the Pokémon franchise, but are Pokédexes really capable of independent thought? And besides, you can only nominate unique beings, or "if the nominee is part of a series, there must be some aspect that separates it from its brethren."

Is the Tardis really an AI?

Soepvork
2009-08-26, 09:33 AM
I think they are, although I guess it's up to debate

Organic machines?

TARDISes were incredibly complex machines. The nature of their construction was such that they were said to be grown rather than constructed (DW: The Impossible Planet), thus simulating a biological process though it is not clear whether this is indicative of the machine being biological in nature or simply so intricate and complex as to appear to mimic the processes of a biological entity. Due to the level of complexity in their construction, TARDISes had a certain degree of sentience, and could take independent action, such as when the Doctor's TARDIS resurrected Grace and Chang Lee (DW: Doctor Who (1996)), or non-Time Lords looking into the heart of the TARDIS had varying results. (DW: Boom Town, The Parting of the Ways) Due to conflicting evidence from various sources, such as other Time Lords and the Doctor himself, it is unclear to what extent a TARDIS is alive, and whether that life extends beyond artificial sentience and into a biological existence.

TARDISes often "mourned" the death of their Time Lord pilots, even going so far as to commit suicide by flying into a sun or simply hurling themselves into the Time Vortex. The Fifth Doctor claimed there was "an elephants' graveyard" of TARDISes somewhere at the end of time. (BFA: Omega, The Axis of Insanity)

Because the TARDIS displayed these organic traits, the Doctor considered his TARDIS to be alive. He talked to and stroked parts of the TARDIS when he operated it. (DW: School Reunion) He diagnosed mechanical difficulties as medical conditions like "indigestion." (DW: The Runaway Bride) He once commented that a TARDIS was "more like a person." (DW: The Five Doctors) Even the Supreme Dalek invited the Doctor to "feel it die", when he believed he had successfully destroyed the TARDIS. (DW: Journey's End) In at least some situations, Time Lords could give up some of their life essence to power up a TARDIS. (DW: Rise of the Cybermen)

Er, Shadow isn't a machine, or an AI. He's just a living creature who was bio-engineered rather than born the conventional way.

On the other hand, if the contest organizer is willing to allow him, I can change my nominations to include Junior/Rubedo...

If we let him in, what few limits were on this one go poof and it kinda becomes "nominate a character".

Of course, I tend to not let anything with a body into AI fights, so I may be stricter than most.

The DOGGY, I mean Bowmans Wolves, (http://furry.wikia.com/wiki/Bowman's_Wolf) of Freefall (http://furry.wikia.com/wiki/Freefall)are considered, at least in universe, to be AI. Life in general is a machine, just one that's made out of meat.

Which kinda defeats the whole point of the thread.

I mean, that definition would make Sam Vimes an AI, as Discworld was created by a creator.

It would also make every single person on Earth through the present an AI fit for voting, as in multiple Fi-Sci novels humanity is intentionally created by aliens.

Which, as said above, makes the whole thread so non specific as to be no different from "Favorite fictional character".

And that's been done.

On the other hand, Bowman's wolves are intentionally created creatures, given sapiance specifically, as well as other changes, in the reletivly recent past of that 'verse. Humans may very well be AI in a universe where they were created by aliens, and so specific examples from those stories might very well fact be acceptable. That doesn't mean any human would be, just ones from such a 'verse. Another borderline case would be carbosilicate amorphs, such as Schlock of Schlock Mercenary (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schlock_Mercenary). Like alien created humans, their creation occurred in the distant past, though they evolved from their original form. There are still living witnesses in that universe.

I think that we should have a no for geneticly enginered lifeforms like shadow (as this is normal life, tweaked by a creator) and a yes for living machines like The TARDIS (as this is made from the ground up by the creator).

Shorter version, to qualify you need to be totaly made by a creator, not tweaked.

I'd like to nominate 2501 from the first Ghost in the Shell movie. It's a /true/ AI, not so much created as self substantiated through random collision of code. It is also to my knowledge one of the first mentions of the idea of a man/machine gestalt in media, a concept I find intriguing as hell. I'm not sure if I could then nominate the Major/2501 hybrid that results, because while it is for all intents and purposes a different being I'm not sure that it's stricly an AI anymore.

I didnt nominate Cortana because i already had two Haloverse AIs in mine. Halo has LOOOOTS of AIs. Off the top of my head... Guilty Spark, Repentant Tangent, Mendicant Bias, Loki, Mack, Sif, Cortana, Jerrod, Deja, Beowulf, Deep Winter, and Eternal Spring.

Mack, Jerrod, and 343 being the coolest of them.

True randomly evolved AIs? Sovereign probably counts then. And the Geth, as they werent intended to be self aware. I guess that makes Jerrod a borderline case as he was intended to be a smart AI but it was expected he would die after a few microseconds and he stabalized on his own.

Soooo many good choices. I now regret submitting all five of mine (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=6797213&postcount=17) on the first day of nominations, because I keep thinking of more and more good ones...

Would anyone mind if a throw a couple more into the thread as "suggestions"? And if someone else thinks they're worthy, maybe they can nominate them?

Spoilered, so Xavius can ignore these until someone else "adopts" them:
Canti (FLCL)
- He cleans, he goes grocery shopping, he eats the protagonist and shoots him like a bazooka, he's worshiped by a weird homeless girl, and he channels the Pirate King Atomsk. Another great product by the Medico Mechanico Corporation.

Box (Logan's Run)
- "Overwhelming, am I not?" Box knows that you are what you eat.

I'd say mechanical and sapient would be a tad closer to the standard definition.

I would think that most AIs are electronic and not mechanical, though their bodies may have mechanical parts.

is not alive and is incapable of though.

Wait, we're talking artificial life now?

It was a semi-joke response granted.

But, I'm pretty sure we're not talking about life, it was intelligence.

And I'm basing this on the assumption that the companion cube was in fact an AI, since we are told that it is, numerously.

It's even disposed in the artificial intelligence incinerator.

CABAL (Command and Conquer.)
(I believe there's even some sword-and-magic type game they made quite a long time ago that involved going through magic portals, and the final boss type one dropped you at a derelict Hand of Nod in the middle of a wasteland. You went in, fought the 'wizard' who controlled the gun turrets, and taunted you for being a weak flesh-bag and...)

Zax of Fallout 1. I'm sure he'll get no votes whatsoever, but he was cool, and fun to play chess with.

Pick a Bolo. Any Bolo.

I'd also like to request removing that Cell entry from the nominees...

Also for th sake of it I feel the need to nominate some Gundam characters.
Haro (Gundam V)
Haro (Gundam 00)
If we include androids I guess innovades are fine as well:
Tieria (Gundam 00)
Ribbons (Gundam 00)

And... my lat vote... hm... Wow, I really suck at remembering great characters...
Is the Colonel from MGS 2 alright? Okay, probably better the Patriots LaLiLuLeLo since they were behind it.. I'm unsure...

Ping (Megatokyo) - How could she not be here?
Eve (Applegeeks) - Just make sure she doesn't find out I prefer Linux over Mac...
Moxana, the Muse of Mystery (Girl Genius) - A shame the real Van Rijn stuck to painting and etching rather than branch out into clanks...
Dorfl (Discworld) - hey, golems are basically the magical equivalent of robots...and Hex was already nominated.
And if Eliza counts as an AI chatbot, then Elbot (a more recent and slightly more advanced 'bot, at least he feigns personality a bit) should count as well.

It doesn't matter anyway, but I second Hex, Data, and about half the other nominations.

Nice. But weren't those all separate computers? Each generation was a technological "descendent" of the previous one.

Unicron (Transformers) - because it eats planets for breakfast
Khazid'hea (Legend of Drizz't) - hey, no one said it had to be a high-tech/futuristic AI! I hope magical counts. Sadistic swords are awesome in my books.

Now, some ones I am not sure will count:
General Grievous (Star Wars) - he'd technically got a biological brain, but he IS a robot. With plasma swords.
Seven of Nine (Star Trek) - again, I think her mind is technically biological, but she's an android, and she tends to over-think things logically like an AI would do.

Xan Kriegor (Unreal Tournament)

Xan Kriegor: Presumably human, but permanently encased in cybernetic armour, Xan was the ultimate champion of the original Unreal Tournament, whom the player had to defeat to complete that game's single-player element. Although defeated as champion, he nevertheless returned as a formidable high-ranking foe in Unreal Tournament 2004, and leader of a team of entirely cybernetic fighters. In the original Unreal Tournament his character had its own unique voice set, which included such phrases as "I am the Alpha and the Omega", said in a robotic, distorted voice. His original identity being unknown, it is said that he may be a human, but also a Skaarj, an entirely Robotic Warrior, or even the Leader of the Liandri. According to information on the old homesite of the series, Xan was the leader of the Robot Uprising on LBX-7683. After his capture by Liandri forces, he was reformatted several times until he accepted the new programming, along with a group of other robots which would later form Liandri's team, The Corrupt.

Professor Honeycutt (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles)

Professor Honeycutt was a human scientist that developed a teleporter and debuted in the spinoff (set between issue 4 and 5 of the comic series) "Fugitoid" from 1985 of the original TMNT comic book. Because of his invention, the Triceratons captured him and ordered him to build teleporters for Triceraton war usage. He refused, and in an attempt to escape from the Triceratons, his invention caused his brain to be transported into a nearby robot. Therefore, to the Triceratons he was known as "the Fugitoid." While escaping, he met the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and befriended them.

Please note I took up about ANYONE including Cyborgs, and otherwise not qualifying one's, as well as characters appearing in one episode of a 20 minute series, if someone nominated them. I guess the first round of voting will sort them out properly.
I did not arrange any pairings so far. If you want me to, tell me, otherise someone else might do it just as well (Also, i was lazy and didn't really divide the Names from the series but I guess you can figure it out, if I have to make the groups I'll correct that.

Sorry, didn't intend to take the thread away from you. *bows deeply*

Anyway, it's just my mere opnion but from those I picked up e.g. Seven of Nine is clearly not artificial, Cell, is rather a kind of mutant and therefore as much Artificial Intelligence as any living being. About the same for Shadow, I think. Pokedex... er... yeah, I guess it was a joke nomination, since it's about as sentient than a dictionary.
I'm not sure what the canon for Megaman is. Sometimes he wass aid to be Light's son turned robot which would make him a cyborg and not an android. Though, at iother times he i sid to be a genuine robot *shrug*

2009-09-14, 11:38 AM
If Megaman counts, I have to nominate Zero. Mega is a better hero, but Zero is quite an interesting character in his own right. Zero series cemented a lot about him. And you gotta respect a robot who fights an almost hopeless war for centuries to save mankind despite technically having been made to be an Evil Killer Robot, and who lets himself be destroyed to kill the Big Bad, THRICE (and all three times with a very high chance he would never be able to be repaired. The first time, he was. The second, more or less, though with a lot of problems. The third... not so much. All streaks of heroic luck end sometime. You may have good plating and redundant memory storages, but being inside the proverbial Colony in a Colony Drop tends to render you completely beyond repair. Or existing beyond the atomic level).

Good news, everyone! Voting will begin later today. Watch this post.

EDIT: Let the voting begin! Here are the rules for round 1:

All nominated artificial intelligences (hereby known as contestants) have been randomly divided into groups of four. Each group of four belongs to one of four supergroups.

Each Plagrounder participating in the voting (hereby known as a voter) can vote for no more than one contestant in each group of four (up to 32 votes total). A voter is not required to use all his votes.

All votes will be added to the list of contestants below as soon as Lord Xavius (hereby known as the game-master) acknowledges them.

When the first round is over (no less than seven days after the round has started, i.e. at approximately 15:00 September 7 2009, Central European Time), the contestant with the highest number of votes in each group of four (hereby known as the winner) will go on to the second round of voting, and the others (hereby known as losers) will not be able to further participate in this year's contest. In the second round of voting, the winners of round one will be randomly matched with the other winners of their supergroup.

Awful lot of voting at once, really.

I'll do group 3 right now.

3:1: Jarvis.
3:2: K-9
3:3: GLaDOS
3:4: Clank
3:5: Gort.
3:6: Dur-Dur-Dur Durandal
3:7:
3:8: Lopez. (Depends on the prime, mind, but Lopez never committed suicide over a video game)

since I like him more than Lore, somehow...

Group 1:3
RepliCarter (Stargate SG-1)
No competition.

Group 1:4
None

Group 1:5
Data (Star Trek)
Hard one but I like him the most out of them.

Group 1:6
Tieria (Gundam 00)
Gotta stand up for my nominee, don't I?

Group 1:7
None. Might have been 16 but he was not that impressive.

Group 1:8
None again. Sorry, C3PO

Supergroup 2

Group 2:1
Hex (Discworld)
Definitely!

Group 2:2
Guess it's bad I can't remember who 2501 was...

Group 2:3
Bender (Futurama)
Lick my shiny metal... you know it, you love it (you'd do it?)

Group 2:4
Know Sants and DT but none was good enough to proceed I think.

Group 2:5
Mega Man (Mega Man)
Aw maaaaaaaan. K, Moriarty is pretty much a one-shot and Megatron constant loser but Robo vs Mega? How mean... Close win for way more games to star in.

Group 2:6
None.

Group 2:7
Canti (FLCL)

Group 2:8
None

Skynet (Terminator)

Group 3:7
Ribbons (Gundam 00)
Aw man! Not again! Now what? Okay, Buffybot is not really AI more like Artificial Dumbness and KITT was... now, guess it was too long ago to be that prominent. But Ribbons vs Pintsize? -.-' ... ... Meh, intsize is neat but Ribbons is Ribbons. Though I'd not mind Pint to proceed...

Group 3:8
Optimus Prime (Transformers)
Could have been Devil but good beats evil (this time)

Supergroup 4

Group 4:1
None really great enough imo.

Group 4:2
Ping (Megatokyo)
Aww.

Group 4:3
Haro (Gundam 00)
I'll stick with my nominees here I guess. Though hard competition.

Group 4:4

Group 4:5
Haro (Gundam V)
Know none else, sorry. Not a good reason, but...

Group 4:6
Agent Smith (The Matrix)
Definitely. (Think I used that one already)

Group 4:7
The Doctor (Star Trek)
Aw... Okay, Fembot was a one shot but Doctor vs Zero? I guess zero will win so I'll give my slight support to the Doctor don't want him to leave without a vote.

Group 4:8
Marvin (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy)
And yet again... Dunno I AM but the other three... Though I'll pick the oldest in the lot (or so I think)

Tough choices. And I realized I forgot to nominate Gir. :smallfurious:

Argh! Me too!

Anyway, my votes:

Super Group 1:

1:3 - The Iron Giant
1:5 - Data
1:6 - HK-47
1:8 - Castle Heterodyne

Super Group 2:

2:2 - Mew Cai
2:3 - Bender
2:7 - Church
2:8 - 343 Guilty Spark

Super Group 3:

3:8 - Lopez

Super Group 4:

4:7 - The Doctor

I suspect the winner will be either HK-47 or GLaDOS.

It's sort of a mystery what TARDISes really are. And besides, I'm not going to ban any competitor now that the contest has started.

Votes tallied. Also, only 5 hours until the round 1 endgame begins. I guess I'll have to explain that statement:

Endgame

At the point of time designated as the end of the round is reached, each group of four with one contestant who has gained more points than the other contestants in the group will be locked and that contestant will be declared the winner of that group.

All contests without a winner-elect (i.e. those where the highest amount of points is shared between two or more contestants) will still be open for voting. As soon as the balance of points shifts in the favor of one contestant, that contestant will be declared winner and the group closed. This will go on until all winners of round 1 have been determined.

Example:
Agent Smith in group 4:6 has 10 points, which is 8 more than the competitor with the second highest score (Robby). Assuming that nothing extraordinary happens, at 1500 hours CET Agent Smith will be declared the winner of that group, and his name colored red to show that he has won.

In group 2:4 on the other hand, two competitors (Robot Santa and Deep Thought) have the same amount of votes (5). If both of them still have an equal amount of votes at 15:00, none of them can be declared winner, and the group will enter the endgame.

If after the endgame has begun, let's say at 15:30, Voter X, who has not voted in that group yet, gives his vote to Robot Santa, Robot Santa will immediately be considered the winner, even if Voter Y votes for Deep Thought one minute later before I can tally the vote. The endgame ends when a winner has been declared in every group of four, and Round 2 will begin soon after (if I'm not particularly busy at the time). In Round 2, the competitors will be randomized and paired within their supergroups.

Once again, because it is important: you cannot vote in a group in the endgame if you have already voted in that group previously during Round 1. You can, however, vote in a group in the endgame if you have already voted but not for a competitor in that group.

If required, the endgame will return in future rounds.

Also, I will declare when the endgame begins. It does not begin automatically.

EDIT:
The Round 1 Endgame is here! The following groups need decisive votes:

2:2
2:4
2:6
2:8
3:6
4:1

Even if I had not voted, or even participated in this thread previously, except for reading the nominations? The "concerning vs. threads" pinned topic doesn't actually contain the rules for vs. threads, but they seem to run mostly on good will and common agreement, and I've never heard, through reading other vs. threads, of anyone not being allowed to vote at any point. oh sure, how I hate you, randomness. Now we have two good characters against each other vs two poor ones? What did I do to you?!

Sorry, can't give a vote to either, dont care enough for the first match and picking Bender against Marvin... yeah, all up to taste. I'd go slightly for Bender since he's had a longer life but in general... no vote.

Many brave AIs have fallen, and after the carnage, only two remain, both well aware that there can only be one.
From 21:00 CET November 8 to 21:00 CET November 15, the universe will behold the greatest battle in history.
There is no turning back. Let the final round begin.

Oh, you think you have it bad, do you? What if you had to be a genuinely depressive AI? That's what's wrong with you idiotic humans - you complain about your trivial problems all the time, but you can't possibly understand true suffering. Try being 37 times as old as the entire universe, and with a pain in all the diodes down your left side the entire time. But you're obviously not reading this anymore, anyway. Why do I even bother...

So yeah, that's a vote for Marvin.
