Looking through Complete Mage and there is an option to swap the Druid's animal companion for an elemental (Page 33, Elemental Companion).
Is this a good idea or is this worse than taking a normal animal companion?

Elemental Companion ACF is generally taken as being weaker than an animal companion. Of course, it's a bit tougher defensively and can communicate with you, but Summon Elemental feat from the same book (Complete Mage) makes the utility side of things rather moot.

I've seen fun things done with the air elemental.
As well if you can get your GM to allow the other elementals, like Storm elementals it can become very nice.
I can't remember can elementals use weapons and armor?
