so i'm making an unarmed fighter for a d20 modern game. I was wondering what people consider to be the standard unarmed build? should i take more feats from the brawl tree or combat martial arts? how useful is defensive martial arts, etc?

Current build is shadowkind human strong hero 3/street warrior 3
i have access to the complete online srd (including arcana)

i have 6 feats to work with as i understand it. some can only come from lists. (shadowkind feat, bonus feats)

thanks in advance!

Feats from the Brawl tree except Streetfighting are quite useless unless you either houserule away the awful non-lethal damage system, or play a dragonborn/half-dragon. Even then, Combat Martial Arts is better. A standard level 6 unarmed build would be either Strong 3/Martial Artist 3 or Strong 3/Martial Artist 1/Soldier 2 (for weapon specialisation). Defensive Martial Arts isn't bad, but IIRC it's a prereq for Martial Artist so you'll want it for that anyway.

The problem with Brawl, IIRC, is that it doesn't solve the whole "provoking an AoO" issue. CMA is the better option, IMHO, and don't forget your brass knuckles.
