Durkon or Belkar? On one hand, Durkon has twice gotten his pockets picked by low-level rogues-once when carrying thousands of GP of vital diamonds, once by a kid. On the other hand, Belkar, as he put it, "doesn't succeed on many Spot checks".

What makes it even funnier that spot adds wisdom and Durkon's wisdom score as a cleric should be considerably higher than Belkar's, yet it appears that Durkon needs it more.

Shouldn't Belkar be doing fairly well in Spot as a Ranger and the team's tracker? I would think his horrible Spot ability is therefore more detrimental than Durkon's, even if Durkon's is mathematically worse, so B needs it more.

many times, Belkar has proven to be a horrible ranger.
1.Roy had to explain it to B that rangers are trackers
2. he didn't know rangers could cast healing spell, V had 2 tell him that

give either D or the horses more ranks in spot

If he had a better head for math, he would be doing so much better.

I'd say Durkon needs it, since no one would trust Belkar with anything of real importance anyway.

Problem is, Spot isn't a class skill for a cleric and Durkon probably doesn't have any cross-class ranks in it. That means his Spot is only being modified by Wisdom and nothing else. This means even a 1st level rogue with max-ranks in Sleight of Hand whose Dex is comprable to Durkons Wis will be beating Durkon's Spot by 4. Ability Score modifiers are worthless when contesting a trained skill versus untrained.

Why? There's no class feature for rangers that require spot. It's just one of many class skills that a ranger may or may not choose to take ranks in.

You can compensate for your weak points. Belkar doesn't need to spot thieves as he spends his gold on hookers etc; Durkon though is carrying valuable spell foci and components, many of which need to be easily accessed. What Durkon needs though isn't Spot.
He needs to inverst heavily in Wisdom boosting items, to get more, harder to resist spells. Then he'd deal with the thieves as an added bonus.

Maybe Durkon needs Sense Motive, instead?

Seeing as Belkar couldn't see Blackwing on V's shoulder in the most recent comic, I'd say he needs it more.

Belkar is probably also the kind of guy who consistently rolls 1d6 for skill checks because he can't be bothered to learn the difference.
