In the new game we're running I had the players make new characters for a sort of gestalt game.

the Character rules goes as follows:

Barbarian, bard, fighter, monk, paladin, ranger, and rogue can all gestalt with each other.

Sorcerer can gestalt with NPC classes.

Wizards, clerics, and druids are as normal.

And my party is as follow:

Bard/Paladin 3(because he would NOT shut up about it)
Rogue/ranger 3
Sorcerer/aristocrat 3
Undecided
Undecided

I'd say ECL 4 or 5, depending on the Sorcerer's spells known.

Oh, and the Bard/Paladin should be allowed if anyone asks. Reason 1: the alignment restrictions on both classes is absurd. Reason 2: Self explanatory. (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/variantCharacterClasses.htm#paladinofFreedomClassF eatures)

There's also a feat that let's Bard and Paladin levels stack without using Gestalt, so it's not without precedent.

I'd personally go Crusader rather than Paladin, but YMMV :P

I would advise against paladin of freedom, if you are playing by RAW.

"You must help those in need, provided they do not use the help for lawful or evil purposes"
You are not allowed to apprehend a criminal, among other things.

If you choose to ignore completely and utterly arbitrary rules then go for it!
