Ummm hey everyone, I was just wondering if there was some way to get rid of your familiar for a different bonus as a wizard.

I know that familiars can be cool but I'm multi-classing into Pumpkin King (I don't want to go straight wizard, Pumpkin Kings are cool, plus no caster level dip) at level 5 so I don't think that it will be as much of a bonus since it won't progress with me so I was wondering what other stuff I could get from trading it away. Maybe there's something cool, even if just for flavor. Who knows? Most likely one of you guys.

So help a guy out eh? :-) Any help is most appreciated ahead of time

Familiar gains all the important abilities by level 5, and it continues to advance its HP, BAB and such beyond that point so keeping it is really no loss. That said, Player's Handbook II offers some nice trade-ins for Familiar for each specialist type, and variant Wizards (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/specialistWizardVariants.htm) from Unearthed Arcana also offer some options.

Having looked up Pumpkin King (seriously, how was I not aware of that one?!), it seems that you are probably a necromancer. The Familiar trade in for necromancers from UA is pretty neat. You get a skeletal warrior who gets better as you level.

Yea, read carefully. Most of a familiar's gains, or at least the most important ones, are based on hit dice, not class levels. Familiars are great once you get Imbue Familiar with Spell Ability.

If you do want to trade it away, a Conjurer has the best option, in PHB2. Teleportation as an immediate action, to get you out of range of effects.

Thanks, I looked up the variant wizards from Unearthed Arcane and I chose to go with the Necromancy Variant for the Enhanced Undead. This plus my Corpse Crafter feat should make my army of pumpkin men nigh unstoppable. Muhaahahahaha :-)

*Reads over the Pumpkin King*

Well...that's certainly a new direction for the whole "Necromancer seeking eternal life" character. I wonder how many people would be willing to trade their head for a pumpkin in exchange for infinite true-res.

Anyway, neat...hope you enjoy yourself.

That's because it's a homebrew class.

A game allowing such a homebrew class might also allow the flaw Forlorn from Dragon Magazine (#333) that basically takes away your ability to call a familiar in exchange for a feat.

Then you use that feat to take Obtain Familiar.

Effectively, this trade makes your familiar be based on total arcane casting levels, rather than wizard levels only. :)

Whoa. I'm familiar with the Flaw involved, but I'd never thought of using it for this particular piece of PrC-enhancing munchkinry. :smallcool:

Wow, unlimited True Ressurections at 25GP/pop is a pretty good capstone for level 13....

Or you could hilariously misinterpret the last line of the ability and say that it applies to the entire paragraph, and not ust the pumpkin-head appearance.

That's because I'm fairly sure that Forlorn doesn't just take away your familiar, it also prevents you from ever gaining one, so that wouldn't work.
