Is the double twenty roll an in house rule, or an official rule. Because, I think that means I could kill a dragon with 400 goblins

It's an optional rule. I personally find it stupid.

Y'ever notice that Lelou's contact lenses get smaller when he's scared?

On topic: I don't use the instant kill rule for a double crit - I use a multiplier stacking roll (Add to the previous modifier the original minus one. So double critting with a x3 weapon would result in x5 damage - x7 damage if you triple crit.)

Well crap, the agency is sending 400 goblins tomorrow, so I can't cancel the order! What am I going to do with 400 goblins?

20 is auto-hit and critical chance.
another 20 is auto-crit.

That's the most simple, and most stable way to prevent obscure moments with things killing opponents 100 CR higher.

Solving your dilemma is "as easy as goblin pie".

I like the 3 20's in a row approuch..

Example:

First roll is a 20.
Secound roll to confirm is a 20 (if the third roll isn't a 20 the crit is confirmed no matter what).
third roll to confirm an auto kill is a 20 the creature dies.. any thing else and its just a crit

that's how we play. in my 11 years of playing i have seen this happen 5 times.
1st time was a necromancer using a dagger against an orc in desperation.
2nd time was a goblin PC striking down a giant (cr appropriate encounter)
3rd time was a kobold npc against a PC kobold was 6 levels lower then the pc who was 10th level at the time(remaining pcs fled as they didn't know what happend)
4th time i don't remember as i was stoned but every one else does (it was my player only good luck i had that session).
5th was a barbarian PC strikings a beholder. its was gory and awsome.

Equip them each with an explosive barrel or a bag of alchemists fire.

Then... I don't know... Blow up a mountain or something.

Shouldn't that be 8000? 20 for the threat, 20 for a natural 20 on the confirm, 20 to succeed the double confirm.

Honestly, anything being attacked by 8000 simultaneous ranged attacks should pretty much die anyway.

my group uses a successive 20 system.

1*20 auto hit
2*20 crit (damage x 2)
3*20 Big Crit (damage x 3)
4*20 Mega Crit (damage x 4)
(those number's are assuming a x2 crit weapon)

it works well and its REALLY dramatic. . . same thing for fumbles. . .

Start a goblin union with them, and teach the world that it's stupid that goblinoids are necessarily evil!

The Jimmy Hoffa of goblins?

I would like to point out that there is no way that many goblins could get to the dragon before a breath weapon destroys like 1/3 of em, and the dragon takes off to pick the rest off at his leisure.

Give the goblins arrows of slaying.

1 in 20 will hit. Of those 20 that hit, the dragon will roll a 1 for the fort save. Bam.

400 arrows of slaying sounds expensive

2282*400 = 912800

So what if you have to waste epic WBL to kill the dragon. :smalltongue:

You don't have to. Make all 400 goblins wizards. Even if they only have an int of 11 and don't specialize: they can now sell their spells in a metropolis for 5 gold/cantrip and 10/1st level spell (by RAW) even if they're all level 1. that's (15 + 10) x 400 = 10,000 a day! 70,000 a week! We can afford to kill a dragon every fiscal quarter with no other source of income (okay, not quite, but we're only off by 2,800)! 400 1st level wizards ROCK!

Well, 400 Arrows of Slaying kill most things, you know. Only things that are either immune to death or don't fail on ones can live.

Or, you know, Celerity wizards who just laugh and get out of the way.

that's hilarious.

the 9 year old is probably like "dude, that was so awesome, I want to grow up to become an unarmed swordsage!"

Even by RAW, your DM would have to be an idiot to allow you to flood the market with inferior product. I imagine the Wizards' Guild would be quite upset with you for knocking the bottom out of their market, and they would use their resources (to wit: hundreds of low-level wizards and the protection money paid to them by the local dragons) to off your goblins one at a time.
