Welcome to the 26th ABR Discussion Thread!
Yes, I'm aware how similar the new title is to the old one. I couldn't resist, I really like that song...
Because we used to burn through new ABR threads so quickly, we created the Discussion thread. All banter goes here, and all comics and non-canon kills go in the main thread. (see line below)
No one really makes random kills anymore, I'm afraid.
Avatar Battle Royale: We All Live in A Yellow Citadel (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=88925) is the current thread. Post artwork there.
Even though it seems to be holding together nicely;
The ABR backup thread (http://z15.invisionfree.com/Remember/index.php?showtopic=161), is used in the event of Giantitp becoming untenable due to server issues or otherwise.
Someone should make a TJH trailer...

Just try not to make them too overpowered.

I'm split between a fire-based character (kind of an aura of heated air around him that he concentrates for blows or heat waves) or an acrobatic one, which to choose :smallsigh::smallbiggrin:

Nexxus City. Now I need someone to make an opening post descriptive of the rules which are:

-Only heroes unless with PMed permission
-If hero, no killing unless, again, with PMed permission
-Godmodding, nuh-uh
-Do not make a character with powers the same as another characters unless with PMed permission. There'll be a character list
-Do not make an overpowered character.

Three questions:

1. Where will you post this game?

2. Does power-stealing as power count as too powerful?

3. Can heroes lose their powers?

@Xartyve2: Would the previous mentioned fire-character be over-powered if he had acrobatic/material arts skills? (material arts could be part of the reason for the fire even)

1. Silly message board games free form roleplaying

2. Yes. Power copying would be better and only if the copied power was temporary and with less potency than the original.

3. With player consent and a good reason yes.

@Xartyve2: Would the previous mentioned fire-character be over-powered if he had acrobatic/material arts skills? (material arts could be part of the reason for the fire even)

Nah, it's cool.

So you plan to lead this more into superheroes-category and less into "evolved humans"-category provided by much-loved and loathed Tv series Heroes? If so, I think I have to rethinkmy character concept

No it's superheroes... "Evolved" humans as a backstory would be a copout.

I don't want the sillyness of the Batman series but neither do I want the doom and gloom of Watchmen.

My hero (i've changed the theme)

Italicised powers are free. Background is how you got your powers.

Name: Borris Townsend
Alias:Synaptitude
Gender: Male
Age: 22
Race: Human
Powers: Teleknesis, telepathy, other psychic powers, flight, basic hand-to-hand combat
Backstory: A dying alien conciousness carried in a pod searching for a new host crashed on the Townsend farm and attached itself to Borris in a mutual cooperation. In return for housing the conciousness Borris was granted extraterrestrial powers which he used to fight good as Synaptitude.

Can you make villains?

^Version. I suspect that was a typo.

I think I'll do the Police liason for the superheroes. Of course, he'll know advanced martial arts and have access to paramilitary tech, so he's not helpless against supervillains.

EDIT: ... Drat. Now I'm torn between the aforementioned police chief and a history monk (for those of you who don't read Discworld, the History Monks are a group of monks who manage time. They use "procrastinators," which move time from where it isn't needed (i.e. the bottom the sea) to the cities. The more skilled History monks do know how to "cycle" which is the act of "slicing" time, allowing them to act much quicker than feasibly possible. Of course, they can't touch moving objects while cycling. A much rarer power (Only mastered by the infamous Lu-Tze) was to mimic the Yeti's time altering abilities, which allowed him to survive decapitation by sending his memories back in time so he takes a different course of action.

It seems a little overpowered, but I still like the idea.

EDIT 2: I think I will go with the Policeman, and here's the concept.

Name: Captain Jordan Tsong
Alias: Non-Aplicable, although more than one person simply calls him, "Chief"
Gender: Male
Age: 36
Race: Human
Powers: Skilled in several martial arts, access to NMB technology
Backstory: Captain Jordan Tsong is a member of the Nexxus City Police force. He serves as a liaison between the Police Force and Superheroes, and he is also the ranking member of the National Metahomonid* Bureau. Captain Tsong is a native of Nexxus City, but his parents hailed from a foriegn country. His father had learned Karate as a child in order to survive on the docks, while his mother, a minor noble, became a master of Kung Fu** in order to have something to do to fight of boredom. Both of them came to Nexxus City to escape the oppresive nature of their homeland, and the two eventually married. Jordan is their only child, and learned martial arts from both of them. Jordan joined the police force, and was recruited by the NMB to liaison with Nexxus City's superhero teams. In private, Jordan has expressed his dislike of his first name and wishes his parents had chosen a more traditional name from the country they were from (Anyone want to name it?).

*I like PS 238. So sue me.
**As you should very well know, in fiction, all Asian cultures are distilled into one. While I don't particularly like this, I don't think having more than one or two Asain counterpart cultures is a good idea

The National Metahomonid Bureau: The National Metahomonid Bureau manages Superhero, or Metahomonid, affairs. Registration is not mandatory, but does make a point of documenting the observed powers of documented Metahomonids. However, the NMB offers membership to Metahomonids who disclose their secret Identity. In exchange, they deputize members into police forces, and offer salaries, so that the Metahomonids can become full-time crimefighters. In addition, Meta homonids who have joined the NMB recieve access to the NMB's supply of technology. Finally, the NMB offers hero insurance, which pays for most of the collateral damage caused by members.

Their armour is pretty resistant, but they mainly count on their lasers for protection. They can kill a squad easily, but take a few seconds to cool down.

Electromagnetic "shields" have not yet been invented by the Tajirans.

Yeah, it can be tricky. Really tricky. The trick, you see, is to proofread your work, and see if it's correct. It's difficult, but it works.

Another trick, one that I use, is to use the spellchecker on another program (I use Microsoft Word) and run everything you are going to say into that first, just to check the spelling.

You can do it!

Neat! I will go to work and browse through the power page, let's see what kind of murderer I can come up with. Any limits I should be aware of?

Also, how many powers can one have before being considered as godmodding sod?

Because this was not answered the first time, repost.

Also, are everyone else making heroes? Oh geeze, it is going to be hard to play villain :smallsigh:

But being the only villain is cooler then being 1 villain out of 27 others. Besides, if the heroes outnumber the villains that badly it also gives you a right to have a stronger then average character. :smalltongue:

Maybe, but then I would be ridiculously powerful... or maybe I had some kind of villanous organization as a whole? I am not above playing multible characters.

That is only of course if this is accepted by everyone.

Before that, he was an ordinary child whose imagination was repressed by his somewhat abusive mother. Name: Dr. Kyle Kristoff
Alias: Golem
Gender: Male
Age: 42
Race: Human
Powers: Powered armor, which grants: laser emission (from his fingers), increased strength and speed (note: neither of these are quite up to superhuman levels, but he is faster and stronger than most average humans), limited shield creation, flight, basic hand-to-hand combat
Backstory: Dr. Kristoff was formerly a scientist for a top secret government research facility. He wished to eventually rid the entire world of all he deemed evil. When the wreck of a crashed alien starship was shipped to the facility, Kristoff seized the opportunity, using the strange and powerful alien technology to fashion a suit of powered armor for himself. He left the facility and began his career as a superhero. Despite his heroic actions, however, the government is determined to retrieve the technology by any means necessary.

Meh, I finally got my ideas finished... what do you guys think of them? Both are villains.

and just for reference, my post:

Well, I managed to gather up some kind of characters... They may or may not be grossly overpowered and stuff, so critique is expected and welcomed.

Character number 1:

Name: Leon K’or

Alias(es): The Blademaster

Gender: Male

Race: Human

Powers: Ability to perfectly replicate any motion he sees (but only within normal reaches of human body), Ability to bend physics (uses this to run up walls, run faster than any human, leap longer ect.). Expert in swordplay, martial arts and acrobatics. Carries mono-atomic blade capable of cutting through most known substances. His ability to bend physics requires active concentration and can be disturbed. He gained his abilities as a result of DNA manipulation from New Order upon attaining the rank of Operative.

Age: 26

Backstory: Leon is field agent and close combat specialist of New Order, carrying out the mysterious will of his superiors. After his failure at Docovo to protect vital research facility, he was sent to Nexxus after new assignment. He received a scar running down from his left eye to his chin as result of his duel with <insert hero here> at the New Order research facility, and took on lasting hate against <insert hero here>. Upon arriving on Nexxus he began to work with New Order cell of Nexxus city, being often paired up in seek-and-destroy missions with Cypher.

Personality: The Blademaster is calm and calculating invidual, and utterly loyal to the cause of New Order. He is practical and often does not bother to negotiate with his adversaries, preferring to solve problems with his sword. He does not see any means to achieve victory being beneath him, but absolutely and always refuses to surrender in combat. He looks down on ordinary people and sees himself fulfilling great destiny. His fatal flaw is Pride.

Appereance: Leon stands about 190 cm tall and usually wears long black coat and leggings over titanium chest plate, which is plain and utterly without decoration. While in missions he usually wears battle-mask covering his lower face (think of modernized samurai mask). His hair is black and stylished to long spikes that descend down to his back. His eye colour is grey and he has scar running down from his left eye to chin. He uses his sword with left hand.

Character number 2:

Name: Michael Todd

Alias(es): Cypher

Gender: Male

Race: Human

Powers: Cypher can manipulate any kind of technology through touch. He can also create and manipulate electricity. He can use electricity he creates to link with piece of technology he attempts to command, and thus requiring no physical contact. He can also control technology even through long distances if he has some sort of connection with it (internet, landline, electric cable ect.). He can also use electricity to attack opponents with lightning bolts or longer, more prolonged electric torture. His abilities are caused by nanomachines injected into his bloodstream as part of bioweapon experiment by USA army.

Age: 20

Backstory: Michael lived in the gutter as worthless beggar until he was taken for bioweapon experiment without his consent. After his will had caused the control of the army over his nanomachines to break, he used his newfound abilities to murder the research team with their own technology and escaped the United States. He fled across the Europe and Asia as wanted man before being recruited by New Order. After that, all tracks of him vanished to thin air and the case was closed. Taking on alias of Cypher, he quickly rose through the ranks of the Order to the rank of Operative, and was stationed to Nexxus to further the goals of New Order. After The Blademaster arrived the two started working together in various assignments.

Personality: Cypher is impulsive and quickly angered invidual. He is extremely proud of his position and powers and usually mercilessly uses his position and skills to his advantage given the slightest chance. Having superhuman abilities has rised his self-esteem dangerously close and he often thinks himself as next step of evolution, despite knowing that others in the world have exordinary talents as well. He cannot usually stop easily and wants more power, wealth and standing in the world even and usually expecially if it means injuring or killing others. Only persons Cypher does not look down at are those with abilities, and he is intimidated as well as impressed by Blademaster. When combat starts he often goes in with confidence but will immediately retreat if it helps him to set up a trap or flee if situation is hopeless. His fatal flaw is Greed.

Appereance: Cypher is young adult, about 180 cm long. He wears grey jumpsuit with metal boots and gloves, and hides his face with black mask and specialized goggles including night- and infra-red vision. When in public Cypher hides his usual attire with leather boots, long grey trenchcoat and black hoodie. Under his mask and goggles his face is pale and the veins running across it purple, as result of the nanomachines. He dyes his hair purple and keeps in rather short. His eye colour is green.

I got a few kicks out of the show, I don't remember how many episodes/seasons I watched.

But I remember watching until -
That episode where Angel came back to life after being killed by Buffy.
I sort of gave up hope for the show then.

I'm not watching this show to re experience the drama of teenage romances. I'm watching to see people in cheaply made rubber suits get their asses kicked.

Now that I think about it, it became the spiritual predecessor to Twilight in a way. As the show dragged on and on they poured more and more glitter onto the whole thing.

I'll give on the Angel-coming-back thing, that was lame. After that, it gets really good, though. Believe me, most of the third season and everything after that is NOTHING like Twilight. They have some really great villains (The Mayor, Mr. Trick, Glory, Willow, and the First), and some really good episodes. A lot of them are really well thought out.
The trouble is, the original concept of the show (vampire killing cheerleader)wards some people off, to say the least. The few that try it out see the first few lousy episodes, and also get scared off. Only those who see it in the middle actually think it's any good.

And Q, I was only barely joking.

I didnt bother with the season numbers. I saw it all through that season with buffy's sister appearing out of nowhere being revealed to actually be some kind of transdimensional key. And then this goody-two-shoes vampire came back and I gave up, because it was just really annoying anymore.

Liminality is related to the games according to Wikipedia, I seem to have missed it last time I checked Tvtropes (they have them listed chronologically) so I haven't watched it yet. Well, .hack//Roots and //Tasogare No Udewa Densetsu are both animes related to //sign. So you could always just watch those. I doubt the information inbetween the anime series is too important. So I don't think you'd miss much if you didn't read the books.

I don't think they use the same characters as //Sign though, and you won't see much Tsukasa or Subaru except for references or with luck a quick cameo me thinks.

But then again their story is over.

According to Tvtropes the entire computer system has broken doown in Roots and the other seems to be happening four years after Sign and related to some AIs are humans (well not really but that's not the point) stuff that has happened earlier (but not in Sign) That and as I just noticed there apparently is a novel telling what happened to Tsukasa later, I'll look at it though.

Characters?
Scooby Gang/Slayerettes:
Rupert Giles, Buffy Anne Summers, Willow Rosenberg (may have misspelled last name:smalleek:), Alexander/Xander Harris, Tara (GAH! Can't remember last name at all! However, part of 4th to near end of 6th :smallfrown:), Angelus (2nd season partially til he turns evil, third partially when he returns), Cordelia Chase(2nd season and part of 3rd), Anyanka/Aud (fourth season-final episode, break in 6th season but she comes back), Faith (part of 3rd season before she turns and part of 7th), Riley Finn (part of 4th, part of 5th), Dawn Summers (not really til the 7th, but comes in 5th), Spike/William (5th-7th, though there are breaks, and he isn't ever really accepted), Oz (gah, what's his last name??? Anyways, part of 2nd to beginning of 4th), and Andrew (7th).
Trio:
Warren (alive 6th season only), Andrew (lives the whole time, and is very, very funny in the last season), and Jonathon (Last name uncertain, RIP, the only one of the Trio who died without deserving it:smallfrown:).
Main Villains/Henchmen:
1st Season: The Master, Darla, The Three, the Annointed One, Luke, and the Hellmouth Creature.
2nd: Spike, Drusilla, Angel, the Judge, Acathla, The First (may be in third), The Order of Teraka (misspelled:smallfrown:)and the Reading Vamp (can't remember his name, but he was awesome. :smallannoyed:).
3rd: The Mayor, Anyanka, Mr. Trick, maybe The First, Faith, and Kekitos.
4th: Adam, Forrest, Maggie Walsh, the scientist guy (what was his name again? The one who worked with Maggie, wasn't really a villain so much as an accomplice), Harmony, Spike, and The First Slayer.
5th: Glorificus, Jinx, Other two henchmen creatures, The Knights of Byzantium, Dracula (minor, one episode), Harmony, Eccentric Crazy Demon, and Spike.
6th: The Trio, Willow, Spike, Amy.
7th: The First, Caleb, Anyanka.
Watchers: Rupert Giles, Quentin Travers (died in explosion in 7th season, which is also one of my favorite scenes).
Other: Joyce Summers, Kendra, Principal Wood, New York Slayer (mother of Wood), Chinese Slayer.

How ?

You seem to have drained as much as the charm as possible out of them, and in the process made it far harder to associate with them, particularly the non-humans.
For instance, NC and Sinister draw their characters with heads the same as OotS style humans, albeit with beaks, but you have drawn them with bird heads. The human brain isn't trained to recognise anything other than a human as sapient (we don't need to), so they don't look like anything other than animals in your rendition. And particularly vicious animals at that, due to the pointed beaks and eyes, and blood/red glow.
Also, you seem to have given Calamity a segmented body, and forgotten what a Tri-kreen looks like.

And on another note, there is no space between the end of a sentence and the punctuation in English. It's "How?", not "How ?".

It's called 'a different art style', Keris. His is similar to OotS, but definitely different (and awesome because of it)
Seriously, I really want to see myself in that style. Can I be included?
Also, NC isn't a member of the Resistance, I think. He just hates the UNA. And Calamity looks a bit to thin...it looks exaggerated and creepy.

What about Bright? I'd be interested to see him in your style, the Teifling devil-armed one-eyed awesome thing that he is.

It looks awful with my style.

So let's say he removed that illusion to take the picture. :smalltongue:

Yeah. Nath Bortak, the gargoyle, is missing.

Unfortunetly I don't have a picture on me at the moment (being away from my "art" computer) but you know who I'm talking about, right?

Also, you're missing red-shirt Q in ALF. I would like you to add him in, if that's okay.

And one for the UNA:

http://www.kinogo.com/victor/fi/banners/fibanneruna1.png

If anyone is absent, please tell me.

Hmm...wow, the contrast between the two groups is huge. For one thing, almost all the UNA are human, and all of them humanoid.
I have three characters in the UNA, all of which were hidden up til now. Ned, the cloaker, who will be introduced in the beginning of FI. And two Dvati (Google it if you're not sure what they look like)who both wear dark green robes and are mages.
Also: I really like the picture of me. I've always wanted to give my character whisker-eyebrows, but have sucked too much at art to do so.

Also, I'd like to propose 'Thunderdome' from this site (http://www.dennyschneidemesser.com/) for FI's theme song. Just because it owns.

Of course, Carmina Burana is better, but I guess it's out of the question.

Woah, great picture.

My only complaint is that Grandfather should be hunched over a little using a cane. He's an old man. A brilliant old man who knows everything there is to know about manipulating public perceptions, but an Old Man nonetheless.

However, you got his clothing spot-on.

Orff's Carmina Burana is something like an hour long. That makes it a little difficult to use as a theme.

Personally, I have a problem with making somebody change their art style to accommodate the others. MM made this plot, he should be able to make the banner the way he thinks is best.
If you look at the two banners, you see a huge difference: The UNA is friendly, the ALF has creepy inhuman evil creatures. That's exactly the way it should be: The UNA says we're evil, heartless people, and deep down, we wonder if they're right.

BRC

mouse sized.
Then get him out of the Peacekeepers and into the UNIA.
If he's the size of a mouse, he's not going to be much good as a soldier. Some resistance fighter or detta will probably just step on him. However, if he's got human intelligence, he would make an excellent spy.

Heck, he could even work as an informer for Grandfather, keeping tabs on what the rest of the UNA is up to so Grandfather can better work it into his plans (Yes, technically he can figure out most things through official channels, but he likes to have his own sources).
