Might have been posted before, but I dare not start reading all of the Snarl related threads that have been posted, less I stay up all night and won't be able to enjoy my Sunday properly because of sleep deprivation.

There is no Snarl. There never was one. We are still in World 1.0 What truly is going is this : The gods have created a world out of their magic in other to breed sentient life toward godhood. For this they need to them to acquire a lot of power and 'ascend', but knowing just how dangerous mortals can be with too much power gained too quickly, hidden most of it on a secret layer of existence, planning on releasing that power slowly within the mortal world. However, they found out that the odd were good this layer of existence would eventually connect to the world, and it did, via the gates, which they cannot close without unmaking the whole world and starting over. They put magical defenses on those to prevent mortals from scouting these holes, like string animated arms, but in the end they had to invent a covert story, because mortal curiosity would always pressure them until is was satisfied. That cover story is the Snarl. They made it horrible as to prevent even the most foolish mortal to even dare approach the rifts. At first it worked well. They even got aid from the Order of the Scribble who manage to seal the rifts, stop their expansion and making everyone think their were safe from the Snarl and move on. However, they realized later that the cover story is a double edge sword. Because of how the Snarl was 'created' in their official story, their have to simulate a pact of no interference, making it impossible to stop Xykon from eventually discovering the truth (and gaining insane amounts of power). They could, but then the whole cover story would crumble and someone would try to learn the truth.

The dark one actively believe the Snarl exist. The gods feed him up with the same cover story because their think he is still too attached to his mortal people, too partial to be trusted with the main plan (which is to breed more gods out of mortal safely, they think the Dark one would try to arise all goblins to godhood ASAP and conquer the multiverse. That is one of the possible mishaps they wanted to avoid by creating this world of lesser but slowly increasing magic.

So why are they not acting if no Snarl is in the way?

1. Would break up the cover story.

2. They hope The Order of the Stick will crush Xykon and avoid further investigation of the gates, as all mortals did since the gods inform a handful few of this 'existence' of the Snarl.

3. They must also be busy doing other things, like the fight vs good and evil and maintaining a prosper and safe existence. They are gods after all, we all know how busy they can get with all those prayers and stuff.

4. Something like a ethical code or a law must also prevent them from directly changing some things, like the time continuum or people's memory, thus why they can't just flick a finger and erase a poorly designed cover story for a better one.

Finally, a believe one of the few sides remained to be discovered will be a group of mortals charged with ensuring the secret of the world within the world without themselves knowing what the secret really is (faithfully taking orders from their gods) This side will simply want to eradicate as many peoples who know too much about the gates or intend to use them in some fashion as possible. (Xykon, Redcloak, Tsukiko, Vaarsuvius, probably the rest of the Order by know too, and Blackwing, possibly Nale and co. as well)

This will make from an interesting twist in the plot. Here's how I see the strip ending : While Xykon will remain the biggest threat (especially when he'll gain uber powers from the secret world. That's bound to happen if my theory is more or less accurate) the Order will also have to face the gods themselves, probably not in combat, but rather in a argumentation leading the gods to understand just how poorly they screwed up everything from the start, and then acquiring the needed temporary power to defeat Xykon at last. Redcloak will die the second Xykon gains uber powers, Tsukiko a little before the last gate is crossed by Redcloak and Xykon (and whoever is left alive in the Order)

Belkar may ascend to godhod or simply use his augmented powers to leave the dumbass world he lived in permanently (that way he won't really die and Belkar's fans won't have to suffer )

Durkon will definetly die.

Haley and Elan will live on happy lives and have many toddlers.

Roy become a fighter in the upper planes and carries on the fight, slowly becoming a sort of god.

V gets to return to his family and live on happy too.

The goblins, out of the Order's argumentation with the gods, will get their fair chance anyway, like every other canon fodder race that have suffered the same treatment. The gods will have more trust in letting the mortals learning their own way to godhood, knowing it will bring much more conflict, more devastation and more adventures, but also knowing that's the only real way the mortals will get anywhere in their existence.
