I just found this the day before yesterday, and given that there's a decent number of people here who are interested in RPGs (obviously) and RPG theory (less obviously), I wanted to share this with everyone. The International Journal of Roleplaying is exactly what it claims to be: an academic-stye journal, with references and peer-review, accepting publications from members of all the world's RP traditions, concerning everything about roleplaying and roleplaying games, including cRPGs.

It's published online, backed up by on-demand dead-tree printing. The very first issue is out, and contains five articles, all of which are available online for free. The second is due sometime soon (fall 2009). It's very good reading.

There's an article on there about the hermeneutics of role-playing...

All I could think about was Alan Sokal's hermeneutical article (see here for a quick recap of the affair: http://www.arn.org/docs/johnson/sokal.htm - just ignore the two paragraphs about religion, they're not even relevant to the article)

I'm pretty sure hermeneutics is a role-playing game in and of itself.

Considering that a lot of playgrounders are incredibly interested in RPG theory, this is a nice find.

Kudos!

Heh. Yeah, my friend mentioned that too. Unfortunately for him he couldn't bring himself to read it because of that conection, but I assure you, I doubt one could easily Sokal this journal. POMOS was a sketchy journal in its own right, and it accepted Sokal's paper on a presumption of Sokal's good faith. I doubt anyone in POMOS actually knew jack about quantum gravity, given that no one in physics actually has a resolution for it.

I'm pretty sure that hermeneutics is an RPg in and of itself...

Ever heard of Dungeons and Discourse? (Dresden Codak?)

This is going into my bookmarks right now.

I'm glad. I thought people would like it.
