View Full Version : Fun Builds

I'm looking for some fun & interesting builds, the kind that let you do extraordinary things. They don't necessarily have to be full 20-level builds, & I'm not looking for the kind of cheese that DM's automatically reject out-right (Pun-Pun, I'm looking at you). I'm just looking for class/feat combos that synergize well to produce spectacular results. Any first-party books are allowed. For example (I did not come up with these builds, mind you):

Wizard 9/Ur-Priest 2/Mystic Theurge 8
• Result: 9th level arcane & 9th level divine spells at level 19

Bard 1/Fighter 2/Wizard 2/Ur-Priest 9 with Able Learner feat
• Result: 9th level divine spells at level 14

Anyone got anything as good/better?

The second one should include Mystic Theruge in it, if only to also increase it's Arcane Spell Casting as well.

I find that a Warlock1/Cleric4/Eldritch Disciple X can be pretty fun, using eldritch glaive as your main weapon. Plus, you can heal people by full attacking them!

Bard 2/Druid 3/Green Whisperer 5/Sublime Chord 1/Arcane Hierophant 9

Result: 9th level arcane & 9th level divine spells and a decent Animal Companion/Familiar (If you take the Obtain Familiar Feat)

Green Whisperer is a PrC from Dragon 311 that gives full progression to bard and druid casting.

How about my siege monkey?

Feral Gargun RHD 2/LA 2/Barbarian 3/Hulking Hurler 2/War Hulk 10/anything 1 using the Goliath Barbarian racial sub level and taking the Overburdened Heave hurl trick. I only charted it to ECL 19, so that last level is open to whatever you want to add. Or you could put in a +1 LA template just for kicks, Mineral Warrior would do nicely.

Most of your class features are unusable unless you're raging (Mountain Rage increases your size category) unless your DM allows your Powerful Build to qualify for the prereqs, so take Extra Rage. Round it out with Fling Enemy in case there's no gigantic rocks or small mountains just lying around.

Always liked Hit-and-Run tactics
Paladin 5/Fighter 4/Cavalier 10
you can add feats like shock trooper+leap attack+combat brute. And combine them with the Cavaliers x5 to charge bonus damage.
Your defense is mobility, since you can move way to many feet with a unicorn lets say as a special mount and with cavalier's abilities.
For added bonus, divine might and paladin's defenses. And antimagic shackles from Exalted Deeds (probably another name) for even more defenses

Deathtouched Sorcerer 2/Binder 1/Anima Mage 10

Fully CHA-based build with a +4 racial to CHA. Extra classes just add to the goodness.

As a complement to any build where you're human, take Factotum at first level and the Able Learner feat: Every skill is always a class skill for you, no matter what.

My classic one(and current backup character): Tibbit Conjurer with Leadership for a Human Bard Cohort, Deceptive Spell, and the hide spellcasting skill tricks. Play as a Familiar.

Now we're talking. I like to know what the build can do, mainly so I can go down a list, looking for annoying abilities for a BBEG, & say "yeah, that'll be fun". My players will cry foul, but when they see the build, they'll rue the day that tried to powergame in my campaign. Rue, I say.

Non-psionic thri-kreen psychic warrior 18: Take the Mounted Combat tree, TWF, and Power Attack. Also don't forget to grab a psicrystal and Illithid Grapple (x4). Dual-wield lances (two-handed) on a pouncing charge, with 8 tentacles (from Illithid Grapple and form of doom). Don't forget to metamorphosis your psicrystal into a pouncing 13-headed hydra with Robilar's Gambit as one of its feats. You can get plenty of versatility from your psionic powers (see: metamorphosis and the Assume Supernatural Ability feat), and you get tons of damage from your melee attacks.

Shaper 6/constructor 10/PrC 4: You can do all sorts of wacky crap with astral constructs. I had a blue goblin that I used this with once. He never ran out of power points and had near-instantaneous access to workhorses, mounts, combatants, and Ikea-trapmonkeys whenever he wanted them. When he wasn't using an astral construct, he was making things using Linked Power and psionic minor creation. Good fun!

Thrallherd necromancer with Shape Soulmeld (necrocarnum circlet): The thrallherd's thrallherd ability isn't mind-affecting, so you can pull in undead. You also have a necrocarnum zombie of your very own (two if you want them). I played an unwilling necromancer whose dead father's spiritual essence followed him around, inhabiting the bodies of slain foes to protect him the only way he could. His energy powers were reflavored as channeling positive/negative energy, and his "thralls" at later levels were drawn to him through his own subconscious' efforts to bring his slaughtered family back. It was gonna get kinda...messy...

Necropolitan Dread Necro with a bunch of female Outsider Zombies, a couple big bruiser skeletons, and maxed Disguise. He has them work the city streets at a good profit, and the skeletons provide protection. All of them look like humans, elves, and the brutes are ogres.

Factotum 5/ Master of Masks 1/ Chameleon 2/

I can use any weapon known to man and have a floating bonus feat to play with. Not very powerful (Note the lack of spells, very sad) but a lot of fun,

I'm partial to my Pirate (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=6691458) build.

Also, a Dervish build from awhile back:

Books required: PHB, CWar, CAdv, BoED.
Ranger 1 - Dodge (first level feat), Power Attack (Human)
Ranger 2 - Two-Weapon Fighting (Ranger combat style feat)
Rgr2/Fighter1 - Mobility (third level feat), Combat Expertise (Fighter Feat)
Rgr2/Ftr2 - Weapon Focus (Scimitar) (Fighter Feat)
Rgr2/Ftr3
Rgr2/Ftr4 - Resounding Blow (Fighter Feat; BoED), Improved TWF (normal 6th level)
Rgr2/Ftr4/Dervish1 - Slashing Blades (Dervish); Dervish Dance 1/day, +1 to blade attacks/damage; +1 AC (Dervish)
Rgr2/Ftr4/Der2 - Fast Movement +5 (Dervish)
Rgr2/Ftr4/Der3 - Spring Attack (Dervish); Dervish Dance 2/day, +2 to blade attacks/damage
Rgr2/Ftr4/Der4 - Improved Critical (normal 9th level feat)
Rgr2/Ftr4/Der4/Tempest1 - Tempest Defense +1
Rgr2/Ftr4/Der4/Tmp2 - Ambidexterity (Penalties to TWF lessened by 1); Two-Weapon Rend (normal 12th level feat; PHB2)
Rgr2/Ftr4/Der4/Tmp3 - Tempest Defense +2, Two-Weapon Versatility
Rgr2/Ftr4/Der4/Tmp4 - Ambidexterity (Penalties to TWF lessened by 1)
Rgr2/Ftr4/Der5/Tmp4 - Fast Movement +10 (Dervish), Dervish Dance 3/day, Greater TWF (normal 15th-level feat).
Rgr2/Ftr4/Der6/Tmp4 - Improved Reaction (Dervish)
Rgr2/Ftr4/Der7/Tmp4 - Elaborate Parry (Dervish), Dervish Dance 4/day
Rgr2/Ftr4/Der8/Tmp4 - Fast Movement +15 (Dervish), Leap Attack (normal 18th level; CAdv)
Rgr2/Ftr4/Der9/Tmp4 - Tireless Dance (Dervish), Dervish Dance 5/day
Rgr2/Ftr4/Der10/Tmp4 - A Thousand Cuts (Dervish)

Skill requirements: For Dervish, Tumble and Perform.
Key equipment: Scimitars, Mithral Breastplate (counts as light armor).
Suggested stats: Str 17, Dex 16, Con 16, Int 14, Wis 11, Cha 10. I would prioritize Con over Dex, since your AC will be a bit low no matter what you do.

Tempest is from Complete Adventurer, and Dervish is from Complete Warrior. This should be decently powerful even at early levels, but it really kicks in at level 12 when you get Ambidexterity. You'll be doing Two-weapon attacks at almost no penalty then, and at no penalty from level 14 on. I'd be very surprised if you couldn't squeeze some more optimization out of the build than I have, but this should do fine for a typical campaign.

Eldariel

Regarding the above build, taking any Tempest before finishing Dervish is not smart since Dervish Dance gives the +1 To Hit and Damage increase every other level along with more Dance-uses more than making up for your TWF penalty and squeezing free damage increase out of the deal, along with getting you closer to One Thousand Cuts which is incredible (once per day).

In a build like that, e.g. Scout (for Swift Hunter > Improved Skirmish) would do much more than Tempest. Really, I've found no home for Tempest ever.

Telonius

Ahh, hadn't revisited the build in quite awhile - I don't think CSco was out yet (or I hadn't bought it yet). Stacking Improved Skirmish on top of that would be very nice indeed.

I quite like the Kobold rogue/trapsmith route, spiced with ToB for that rabid cournered psycho element, bonus attacks from the web enhancement and the feat that gives you one for the tail can be fun with tiger claw and sneak attack

there's some great flavourful necromancy prestige classes from the tomb of necromancy (http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75882/19527634/Tome_of_Necromancy), I've had a really fun and above all irritating BBEG with a Sorc/Stranger with the Burning Eyes. He annoyed the crap out of them.

Can we do 4th Edition?

The Crazy Cat Lady: hybrid Shaman/Ranger; essential feats Hybrid Talent:Ranger Fighting:Beast Mastery, Learned Spellcaster (multiclass Wizard), Arcane Familiar, Initiate of the Old Faith (multiclass Druid), and maybe Adept Power to acquire a daily Summon spell from the Druid or Wizard power lists.

(Dual multiclasses are legal with the Forgotten Realms: Windrise Ports background. Or for pure bards, but there are a number of reasons why that isn't appropriate for this concept.)

The Crazy Cat Lady probably has a dozen or so cats, but three of them are special (and not necessarily house-cat-size):
* the ranger's Beast Companion
* the arcane caster's Familiar
* the shaman's Spirit Companion

In combat most of the normal cats run off, but those three stay to help. Plus she can use various shaman spells to bring in more cat-spirits, the druid (or wizard, pick one) Summon to bring in at least one more cat, and then use the druid's Wild Shape ability to shift into cat-form herself.

For weapons she grabs a couple of cat-toys with lots of shiny dangly bits: a flail and a scourge. The wounds they leave bear a passable resemblance to raking cat-claws.
