Anyone know a way to turn a personal spell into a touch or ranged spell? Looking for a little 3.5 love.

Thanks in advance.

Reach Spell, hells yeah! +2 metamagic, makes something a ray of range close, IIRC.

The Master Specialist class, if you are an Abjurer, lets you do such with Abjuration spells 2 or 3 times/day. I believe it's the level 10 ability.

Reach Spell only works on a spell if that spell was already Touch range.

Oh damn. Thought it worked on Personals too. That's what I get for posting while AFB.

There was some PrC or another which made Personal spells Touch. It was abused in the War Weaver guide to cast Personal spells through the Weave and affect the entire party

Partner it with Magic of the Land, and you get hilarity.

Algernon of the White Lilies hilarity Thank Doc Roc, or Tidesinger, for the full party Time Stop, or if you really want to get crazy, the full party Twice Betrayer of Shar. Yes, you can TBoS through the tapestry.

Spellguard of Silverymoon, Forgotten realms PRC

Specifically the Spellguard ability they gain as a capstone, which allows any spell that boots AC, saves or gives extra HP/healing to be made Touch instead of Personal.

Based on a previous investigation I think that this is the only such ability. I've never seen any other method that works.

Actually, it's not a capstone. Spellguard is a 5 level class and they get that ability at level 4.

It is limited to "defensive" spells, with an explicit definition provided, but the definition does cover quite a number of spells you might want to do this with, and Magic of the Land can debatably make it work with any spell.

If you have access to Shapechange for the creature you want to cast the buff on (Shapechange qualifies as defensive for Spellguard with no shenanigans regardless of the form you choose, thanks to it inheriting the "heal as if resting" clause from Polymorph, btw), you can have the recipient Shapechange into your choice of any of the symbionts from the Fiend Folio. These creatures all can attach to a host and automatically copy any spell the host casts on himself regardless of targeting restrictions.

This is a significant part of Team Solar's buffing strategy (see my sig).

There are a few magic items that can help as well, though they are generally expensive and have drawbacks. Rings of Spell Storing are in core and allow you to get around Personal range restrictions by counting whoever's using the ring as the caster, but they are expensive and force caster level down to the minimum. I vaguely remember something, I think a pair of bracers, in either the Magic Item Compendium or DMG2 that lets you share a personal range spell with the person wearing the other bracer, but cuts the duration in half.

Minor note, but that's not actually the capstone. The capstone is +1CL. Of the 5 level long class, you get it at 4th. Combines really well with Sanctum Spell'd War Weavers to cheat the 4th level spell requirements down to 3rd.

EDIT: ninja'd

no more abusive than making a gun or a tank or an airplane via application of your knowledge of the rules of the universe.

Magic of the Land. Whenever you are in a natural setting, your buffs give allies temp HP. That makes any spell you can cast qualify for Spellguard. Then, there is a spell on the www.wizards.com website that creates a little acorn for days/level. As long as you have that arcorn on your person, you are treated as being in a natural setting. Combine together, and you can cast any buff spell on any person. Tensor's Transformation on your party's fighter? lulz.

The other method to cast spells on people is Occular Spell, from Lords of Madness. Its a +2 MM that stores spells in your eyes. At some later point, you can release those spells as a full round action that creates 2 rays with a 60' range.

Pew pew, glowy lazer buffs from your EYEZ!!!!

custom research a touch version of the spell... thus the DM gets to approve it on a spell by spell basis. If the spell is too abusable, it just is not gonna work or significantly increases its level.

Frankly I would love to see more "metamagic spells"... as in,

You found a scroll of stilled fireball, it is a fireball VARIANT with the still spell applied to it. You do not need to have the still spell feat to cast it, it can be written in the same spellbook as your regular fireball spell, it is distinctly a DIFFERENT spell than fireball.. maybe it also counts as a level 4 spell. It costs more.

Maybe people with a metamagic feat can undo it, for example, still spell allows you to ADD a somatic component to a spell that has none, and take it one level lower?

frankly a ton of the spells and items are totally superflous, just a way to make more books out of the same content, most RPGs give you a base spell to modify as you wish... wizards releases book after book containing tons of varients of the same spells, large pictures, and pointless "fluff".

Id replace a lot of spells with:
Ball of [Energy], V,S, M
You research/learn on level up a spell that causes an energy blast similar to a fireball, doing 1d6/CL damage. You can take multiple spells based off of this, each is a different spell. Each spell may have any metamegic type feat applied to it to change its qualities at a price of making it a higher level spell.

Ray of [ability score of your choice damage]

Ray of [direct damage]

etc...
This can also be really neat as ANYONE AND ANYTHING can be a wizard... and the spells you loot might not be the complete standard and exactly what you need.. for example if you killed the awakened ape wizard and got his spellbook, you would find that all his spells are one level higher than they should be, and don't require a verbal component (they have dexterous hands and can SCREECH fine, but they cannot talk like a human can)

And we can finally have someone blast with an ice ball or a lightening ball without looking at custom content.

Oops, I misread the level as 5.

I gave the precise limitations in my post.

Those items are news to me. :o

What about that 9th level Wu-Jen spell...Transcend Mortality or some such? Doesn't that spell give you a boost to saves (amongst many things) and normall yit's only Personal Range. If so...

It's also an immediate action to cast. So, you ready your standard to dismiss it. So silly.

Hold on there. Spellguard doesn't automatically work with Shapechange; the target has to be wounded first.
... or grants additional hit points (either by healing wounds or by bestowing temporary hit points).

Perfectly legal. Then you're gonna get your DM to throw the heaviest nearby book at you as they try to figure out the improvised weapon damage for a pen. :smallamused:

Easier way:

Tank: Hit me
Monster: Wait, what?
Tank: Hit me, I dare ya. Come on, I'll even be flat footed for this...
Monster: Okay... *smack*
Wizard casts Shapechange on Tank
War Troll/Force Dragon Tank: Nice hit. My turn. *Schlork*

Well, if you are delivering it as a touch, you just punch the fighter. Assuming you can hit his full AC, you'll do your 1d3+str non-lethal damage...minimum 1.

Bingo

That's not the point. Why pray to PELOR? He doesn't give a crap wheter you live or not. He's the same god that grants Jozan castings of Symbol of Pain. In case ya didn't know, the spell he's granting is EEEEEVILLLL.

That doesn't work for the most part. Imbue arrow only works for area spells. Most personal spells aren't area spells. I'm assuming you could use it for things like antimagic field though which could be pretty handy.

Making spells into potions in advance can get around the problem to a certain extent, but only works on 3rd level or lower spells.

Wizards can research their own spells. It actualy sais you can make up new spells with DM approval. Hell Id allow any caster player to create their own spells.

I would make a personal or a touch spell into a ray spell two levels higher than the origional.

i don't get it... are you making a joke? There's actually considerable evidence that Pelor, far from being the loving God of the Gentle Sun, is actually the NE God of Dehydration and Fire. He has carried out a mass deception of the Good Gods, and only because he has gotten careless people have started noticing cracks in the facade. If someone would provide a link?

The first trace of Pelor dates back to a demon lord in the the first edition. 3.5 art has a cleric of Pelor cast an [evil] spell, a spell a good deity can't grant (said cleric is also a jerk IIRC). Pelor's protfolio is the sun, meaning sun burn, skin cancer, dehydration, sun stroke, evaporation and will destroy the world in a few thousand years.

Together this evidence points to only 1 thing Pelor=evil.

Pelor, the Burning Hate. (http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75882/19558798/Pelor_the_Burning_Hate)

Also, casting personals through the weave is incredibly abusive. I'm the author of the most recent war weaver guide, and the progenitor of the Algernon build. Trust me when I say it's the most powerful thing I've ever built with the possible exception of the disputed 6th level epic spells build.

No joke. Pelor is evil. In fact, I think I'll write up a campaign specifically for a the PC to uncover the truth about the church.

If I was to create a Meta-magic feat (since my DM allows that) Would it be 1 or 2 levels higher to turn a personal spell into a touch spell?

In my opinion 3 or maybe even 4, some personal spells are very powerful and allowing them to be spammed across the party will unbalance the game (more)
