After 50 pages, the thread needs to be reset, so begins the 8th version of the OOTS Quiz

I just had the idea of starting an oots quiz. There are hundred -- alas, even thousand! -- of little interesting and/or funny details in the comics which you sometimes do not notice unless someone is poking your nose onto it. (: poke thog's what?)

The rules are plain simple. Someone asks a question that can be answered with (one or more) oots comic strips. (However, try to avoid boring counting questions...) Then people can try to answer it which should always include a link to the strip where you can see the answer. (Please do not write something like "Ah, that's A, you can see it somewhere between OOTS141 and OOTS200. Or maybe it was also a bit later, can't remember right now, but it's definately A.")
If still no one has a clue after after -say- 24 hours (maybe earlier) hints can be given. Whoever first gives the correct answer can ask the next question.

OK, 'nuff said, let's get it started! (: YAY!)

Oh, btw... it would be nice if people edited the link to the correct strip right next to the question once it has been answered. (Not the answer itself, just where you find it.)

1)The first player to answer a question correctly, asks the next one.
2)If that player doesn't have a question immediately in mind, then state Open question and let someone else ask.
3) Questions have to have an answer that is demonstrated by at least one, and no more than three, canon online strip. (No bonus material either online or in the books)
4) No Counting questions more than 3 parts. For example: how many times has Roy said "the".
5)If the answer given is not the answer expected, but still technically answers the question, Allow it. You can rephrase and ask the question again later.
6) if an answer is given that in no way is correct, then players can call attention to the fact. At that point, there may be 2 questions occuring at the same time. The 1st question that was incorrectly answered is the valid question. The second question may be answered, but for no prize (aka asking the next question).
7)If your response is ninjad, that is if someone beats you with the correct answer, please edit your post stating, "ninjad please answer above question".
8) After 24 hours without an answer, please provide a hint. After an additional 24 hours pass, please provide the answer and take pride that you have stumped us all.
9) Recognize that this is a game. It is suppose to be quick and fun. If a question seems to go beyond the rules, assume that the asker is not familair with the rules, and point them out. If the asker affirms that the question is allowable within the rules, then continue with the game. If the question turn out to be unallowable, it becomes an open question. Groan and move on.

That seems to be a good expression of how we play the quiz game, judging by observing the posts.

This is the current question:

Find the sound effect "kathang".

1) Get the page you want to link to.

2) highlight the web address, and copy with ctrl-c

3) highlight a word in your post

4) click the "insert link" icon. That's the one that looks like a planet earth with a couple of little rings. Its in the middle of the second row of icons, just under the smiley face.

5) a message box will open, asking for the URL. Paste the page's address with ctrl-v. Hit OK.

As for my mysterious question about becoming a saltwater solution:
I was referring to this definition:
"A homogeneous mixture, which may be liquid, gas or solid, formed by dissolving one or more substances" so a person falling in the ocean doesn't make a solution, but a mixture. Sorry about the confusion.
the answer is the imp. V says "Your aerial elusions shall not keep you from joining your master in a low concentrate saltwater solution." But they do.

Rule 9: Groan and move on, and I will.

Reading all the questions that came after, I noticed this one was never answered:

Uh, why? They were banned for a very simple reason: It's very unfair to those who doesn't know any reference from that movie/bokk/whatever.

This was discussed in the OOTS Quiz VII thread. Enough people said they wanted to remove that reference rule.
Because:

A) Google and wikipedia, Yahoo and numerous other searching and reference tools are at your disposal. Don't know how to use them? Ask a librarian.

B) A question has a max life of 48 hours. The question poster must provide a good hint after 24, then the answer at 48. If you don't know or don't want to know the answer, just wait a bit and let others play. Another question will always appear.

C) The order of the stick is rich with pop culture references. By forbidding those questions, we are only giving the people who have an exacting eye for the art of OotS (like find questions) the majority of the game.

D) This is a game. There is no prize to be won for stumping the playground. Hence the last four words of the rules. "Groan and move on." It is just a game, intended soley for fun. Anything that is preventing us, as a whole group, from having fun, like reference questions, should be removed.

Forbiddenwar
2009-09-28, 01:55 AM
Technically, Thog is literate, since he is multiclass fighter. Also is Belkar.

If correct, and references are allowed, find a Nethack reference.

You need to post the strip(s) that prove your answer.
In this case:
http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0265.html
shows Belkar is literate.
and
http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0132.html
shows that Belkar is a barbarian

Also, regarding your question:
References are allowed but non canon or bonus material from the books are not allowed.

3) Questions have to have an answer that is demonstrated by at least one, and no more than three, canon online strip. (No bonus material either online or in the books)

Like this:
http://www.giantitp.com/comics/GuestStrips.html
3rd guest strip

Sorry if that rule was unclear. Every question must have an answer that is demonstrated by one of the online NUMBERED strips.

If this wasn't the reference you were looking for, sorry for the reminder. It was the first thing to come up with a google search ("order of the stick" and nethack)

So unless there is another Nethack reference, it is open question.

Edit: after more searching, I understand that Familicide (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0639.html) is a reference to a scroll of genocede, a NetHack spell. Don't know if this counts as well since, as references go, it is a strech.

Sorry, not had time to get online recently. But that answer doesn't work for me; I was talking about an actual, physical disability. I grudgingly accepted Blind Pete earlier because I hadn't taken him into account when I phrased the question.

Hints, then: It isn't one of Haley's alter-egos, it's a separate character. And that character appears while Haley's mulling over a popular topic of debate.

By all means answer Zed's question first though.

I'll rephrase mine from earlier, then: Find a figment of Haley's imagination putting their disability to good use.
