As this thread here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=125081) says (near the end, 8th post or so), someone has made a Random OOTS-Related Trivia Fact Thread. That someone is me.

RORTF's are, well, facts related to OOTS in the real world/other fiction. Such as:

"The golem shown in the chase after Celia, Belkar, and Haley at Grubwiggler's with a baseball uniform and a baseball head is Mr. Met, the National League mascot for the Mets."

Yeah, that was specific-ish, but stuff like that.

Trivialize away!

...Which brings the total of sporting mascots seen in the strip to three, along with the appearance of these (http://digitalpapercuts.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/newdevil.jpg) guys (http://cdn.bleacherreport.com/images_root/image_pictures/0379/8843/116179_feature.jpg) in strip #640 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0640.html).

The gods of the east, in addition to being extinct, have the distinction of being teh only pantheon whose acronym of the shown members in comic number 273 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0273.html) is an onomatopoeia. Zeus and Ares are shown (in that order) and the third god is almost certainly Pan, producing ZAP.

The other acronyms are OTL (North), MT? (West) and DTRD (South).

The way that the traditional pantheon of Greek mythology has been abridged in the following comic is also interesting. The 13 major gods (the 12 Olympians and Hestia, who does not have a personality in Greek mythology) were Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Hera, Demeter, and Hestia (the original 6), in addition to their descendants Athena, Ares, Artemis, Apollo, Hermes, Hephaestus, and Dionysus. From this list Hestia, Hermes, Hera, Athena, Artemis, and Hephaestus have been eliminated, and Pan (pictured in comic 273) was not mentioned.

This leads to the possibility that either a) some fraction of the pantheon led by Pan escaped or b) in later centuries fragments of the gods filtered back into the Material Plane and became warlike demigods. If this was the case, Aphrodite might have become Artemis, Demeter might have become Hera or Pan, Ares might have become Athena, Hades might have become Hermes, Poseidon might have become Hephaestus, and Apollo might have become Hestia.

If this recycling did not occur, then there are some rather large portfolios missing. Tools and metalwork would have been completely neglected, while hunting, travel and the home would have had secondary roles at best.

I apologize if this bit of trivia is excessively esoteric.

I know quite a bit about Greek Mythology because I like the stories and have a good memory. I'm glad you didn't find it too verbose.

I think it's more likely that many of the gods were omitted due to space allowances...but it's a cool idea.

Wow, a referance to one of the comics pre-first book. I felt almost nostalgic.
