View Full Version : What Should This Symbol Represent?

On a set of trading card sleeves I bought, there was a sort of "misprint" on the clear side of the card. I like the general shape of it, and want to use it for something.

What do you think this symbol would reperesent?

Something about The Void/Stars maybe?

Something to do with Beholders, perhaps?

Personally, I see the sun (perhaps an eclipse) and hands/feet. It looks very tribal to me, even on the sleeves where it looks much more "precise."

I'll see about getting a picture of the impression.

I immediately saw snakes circling around the edge of the world, guardians to keep bad things out or keep the creatures of the world in. Or celestial procession, equinoxes, or something similar.

Prehaps it could represent misprinted cards?

The sun's reflection upon a body of water.

Sleeves*?

Actual picture (it looks really bad--cellphone camera. If you can scale the picture down it is more noticable.)

I'd say it's either a staring eye or a pair of footprints. Make of that what you will.

My first thought was lost because I immediately read everyones answers. But let's say "Rorschach geek blot test" :)

Seriously, I see either a symbol indicating my hi-beams are on, or a sun.

A portal/tunnel through a spherical celestial body. The dots are stars, and the broken circle has a implied path running through its circular shape.

How about good old Bytopia?

One of THE coolest planes around, and one of the only places where a miss on planeshift can drop you into the freaking sun.

I also thought Beholders from the picture. It's got too many dots, but if I were in a dungeon and saw that sign, I would start backing away very quickly...

I see a closed, sleeping eye, surrounded by tattoos.

It's the symbol on a scroll of true strike - magical crosshairs.

It's the secret symbol of the cult of 'that **** crab' - those who worship the mighty CR 3 creature that can wipe level 7 parties.

Hee, I love Bytopia.

Anyway, the three impressions I got:

-celestial bodies of some sort (opposed)
-an eye (closed, or maybe removed)
-one of the three entities from Eternal Darkness

5 champions of one world balanced with 5 champions of a mirror world.

Not necessarily in opposition. Also, the worlds may be metaphorical - physically could be the same world.

The Sun. It looks solar to me.

Beholder or sun. It could also be a castle (those things outside are the towers and those wholes are gates) or eye.

The sun's reflection upon a body of water.

Exactly my thought.. And since many signs depend on context, I guess it could mean both Sunrise, Sunrise over ocean or the direction East (Or whatever side the sun rises from in your campaign.)

Looks to me like those little dots are either trying to tear the circle apart or potentially put the circle back together.

Seems like a good plot hook.

My first impression was the sun peaking over water.

To me then, a symbol like this might represent birth, rebirth, death, or somwhere in between. I'm also more inclinded to think of things in between (similer to the idea of a Duskblade). So such a symbol might represent alot.

The Eye Divided.

An ancient evil once stalked these lands. When it was defeated, the only part that remained was its eye, which was shattered. Cultists of The Eye Divided seek to find the fragments and re-unite them to resurrect their demon. Extreme members, as a sign of their devotion, will cut their own eyes in half.

Here's a cool site I use to find all sorts of symbols to use when I make adventures: www.symbols.com

You can search for your particular symbol using various parameters.

Looking through the symbols on that site, this looks like a combination of symbols 2:1 (doubled and opposed) and 26:37, which in Sweedinsh hobo iconography would mean "Here you can find Shelter, sleep, money and food".

So perhaps a symbol for a Sun god whose followers provide for the indigent. Or, in particular the symbol on the temples of said deity. Being a Scandinavian symbol, perhaps the Norse goddess Sol.

No matter how good the ideas in this thread are, the best answer is the one you get this way:

Put the symbol on something important-looking in your campaign. Something portable. Something with strong magic auras, but no one can get it to do anything. You players will brainstorm possible meanings of the symbol. Choose the one that seems to scare them the most, and that is what the symbol means.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v220/2ndTrip/Semisun.gifAn object orbiting a planet (sun & moon?).
Bite marks by something with funky whiskers.
Kind of yin/yang-like.
An eye without an iris (so, in effect, a blind eye).

Literally, it looks like a prophesy to me:
"When the sun rises over the hill and the moon sets in a valley, seek with a blind eye"

(or exchange sun and moon, that works too)
