Looking for a game

I remember a really old Sonic game in which you could choose Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles. It was a sort of platformer, if I have my definition of platformer correct. I remember Sonic could roll, Tails could fly, and Knuckles could glide or something like that. Or maybe all of them could roll and Sonic had another ability...
Can someone link me to an article about the game,

if you want to use knuckles you have to have the sonic and knuckles cartridge (or the equivalent program) which technically changes the title screen to "sonic 3 & knuckles"

and sonic gets special abilities based on the shield he has.
