I've read all of OOTS many times and one thing I have yet to figure out is what monster is Rich portraying wit the squishy, white, tentacled, jellyfish looking things that always end up as safety cushions. They must be something from an older edition (2nd or even 1st maybe, *shudder*) and I have never run across them before. Anyone know?

They are called "Flumphs," all I know is they are from earlier editions, they were one of the very few Lawful Good monsters back then, and they were considered so silly looking that their creator actually apologized for their existence.

EDIT: Click here (http://www.headinjurytheater.com/article73.htm) and here (http://www.headinjurytheater.com/article95.htm) for more goofy lookin' monsters.

The flumphs were from the original Fiend Folio, a book rife with silly creatures. Oddly enough, their saucer-shaped bodies were supposed to be very tough.

Yes, they're supposed to be armoured on top, so the recurring use of them in the strip as soft cushions to land on is a bit off...still, story (and in this case, jokes!) trump the rules!

Flumphs have their own wikipedia article, as is right and proper:

I'm still looking forward to a potential time when the Flumphs can actually talk to the Order of the Stick. Though with the way these running gags are going, they'd be lucky even to be noticed. xD

I like how the Flumph in the Wiki article uses the art from OotS, instead of the original artwork.

Because quite frankly, Rich makes these guys look adorable!

Not exactly from OotS, just in the same style. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Flumph.svg)

OH MY WORD the next comic actually addressed our comments. I never thought we'd actually have some effect on Haley's last line. Butterfly effect and whatnot. O_____O
