I'm having a hard time finding a good online co-op game to play with a friend of mine. He dislikes FPSs and isn't a big fan of strategy games, so I'm mostly looking for a co-op RPG or RPG-like game (but not a MMORPG - he already plays one, and I'm bored of those).

The last two games we played were Diablo 2 and Neverwinter Nights, both of them for the Nth time (where N is some pretty big number). We want something new (technically it can be something old, release date doesn't really matter).

We tried a few other games (like Sacred and Titans Quest), but generally they got old way too fast. Searching for co-ops games around review sites and such doesn't seem to provide much help - apparently nowadays nobody cares about this factor.

Any suggestions? Games that can run in a Mac without emulating Windows are a big plus, by the way (but not obligatory). Thanks in advance.

Well even though System Shock two involves you running around in first person and shooting things, and thus technically is an FPS, I would still recommend it to you. It has many RPG elements such as inventory, skills, enhancements ETC.
It has also been recognized as one of the best games of it's genre. EVER.

While normally the game is single player there are options available which will allow you to play co-op over a LAN, or over the internet, or you can use something like Hamachi.

You can get the patch for co-op here.
Also since the game is pretty old the graphics are not too good, however the game makes up for this with amazing audio and atmosphere.
However if you find the graphics to be unbearable there are fan made patches available that improve the appearance immensely.

Here are some that I found just doing a casual search, I am sure a more theral one would turn up more.
