I've been looking for a nice jacket for the upcoming winter, and I've always really liked jackets/coats with very high collars. By "very high collars" I mean "collars so high you can barely see over them". I know almost nothing about fashion, so I don't have very many sources to check.

I'm hoping for something trencoaty, like this:

...but with an even higher collar that, at the very least, easily obscures the mouth (that is, I don't have to keep tugging up on the coat to cover my mouth/nose), preferably the nose.

Then why not get a trench coat. Many now come with thicker liners, that unless you live in Alaska, you can probably get away with. Other than that, you should be able to find a ski jacket that has a collar big enough for what you want. Some leather jackets might work too, but they aren't really winter coats.

Well the first thing that poped to mind for me is a Greatcoat. Not sure how hard they would be to find though. Wikipedia says they are also known as Watchcoats.

A quick search on amazon doesn't show anything listed specifically as a greatcoat but it does show a lot of dusters. Similar type of coat but more of a western design to it compared to your normal trench coat.

Not high enough, and there's a hole in the middle that fails to obscure the mouth.

Do the coats I'm looking for exist only in fiction? To be more specific, I'm looking for something like this:

Observe how the collar goes all the way around the neck, obscuring the face up to the nose.

One option is to make it yourself. It shouldn't be too hard to find patterns for a great coat or trench coat then you would just have to figure out how to modify the collar to end up like you want it.

I can't think of any live fiction where a coat like that is being used. However, I think even the anime coats are based off of normal trench/great coats just with the collar turned up. Having the collar turned up isn't the normal look for them and you probably aren't going to find any/many with a picture like that, but that doesn't mean the coats can't do it. Collars were put on there for just that sort of reason, to flip up for better protection/cover from the elements. Its just that it is very rare for people to actually use collars like that.

I've seen coats with capacious collars, at least in women's coats, but they are always displayed with the collar rolled or buttoned down. You have to look for broad collars, not just upright ones.

Topman London do a wool jacket thats exactly what you want but only waist-low (i.e. doesn't cover your legs.)

Failign that any sort of peacoat tends to have a big collar on it.

the reason not many coats like that exist is they're impractical at best, uncomfortable at worst. Yes, to some peoples taste they may "look" cool, but they fail on many levels:
*they'll either be tight round the head/neck restricting movement, rubbing and generally being uncomfortable
*loose - letting rain water in, an all sorts of crud accumulate
*plus you'll look like a dog whos got a cone collar from the vet to stop it biting at the stitches

a coat like that won't neccessarily come cheap, and the novelty-vs-practicality will wear out fast

theres a reason people invented scalves

Any way you could go for a replica Van Helsing coat? Big, leather, it has the collar.. though expensive. Found one once for about £250, IIRC.

Nice, do you play FFX, good game is'nt it? Anyway about the coat I think the only way your going to get exactly what you want you would have to get it custom made which could get pretty pricey. But if you don't want to splurge on a custom made one the above suggestion is probably you best bet.
