Have you noticed that the inhabitants of Sandsedge are really bad at Spot and Listen checks? For example, four people in the street adressing Haley as "young man" despite the fact that the outfit she wore left no doubts in me as to her gender, and the cartographer chick thinking that Roy was looking for a sax tent.

Maybe there's something in the water, which also caused Belkar to fail two listen checks in a row (in comic #676)? Discuss.

No, I'm not a teacher, I just always wanted to say that. :smalltongue:

Belkar failing his Spot and Listen checks are so well-known they've become a trope (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FailedASpotCheck)

I know, but two listen checks in a row? Coupled with the other evidence? Surely no coincidence!

Right. You may as well say that the Stickverse is the World of Abysmal Spot and Listen Checks.

Right. You may as well say that the Stickverse is the World of Abysmal Spot and Listen Checks.

I was simply stating a fact.

Oh, and I feel your pain, Malkar.

Wait, aren't you hiding in a magical bunker while me and penguin43 duke it out in the Crack Pairings thread?

I have a computer here, and broadband.

Sorry, I was replying to Katana when I said "right". To be more serious, I don't think this is anything unusual. Although perhaps Sandsedge is actually the City of Abysmal Puns.

Wait, but isn't the bunker on the internet, in the playground?

Okay, now I'm confused. And off-topic.

EDIT: You're certainly right there, Herald.

I know, trippy, isn't it?

La la la la, the Magical Mystery Internet is coming to take you away!

Deserts in general are known for dust and wind.

Add to that the noise associated with a busy port town, and I wouldn't be surprised if the whole place has a blanket circumstance penalty to Spot and Listen checks.

Not that Belkar needs it. Particularly when the "fail" option involves taunting Roy...

yeah,he kinda "failed" when Roy became a chick but we discovered he could tell by the smell

I do believe that Belkar has such a low spot and listen score that he must be nearly blind, therefore a coincidence.

I believe this is what they call in the entertainment business a joke.

Well, Belkar's spot and listen check modifiers are known to be abysmal and your average commoner isn't very high level, so it can't have spent many skill points in spot and listen. Then you add in the fact that a desert merchant city is EXTREMELY NOISY (I know this from experience) and you get a pretty bad circumstance modifier right there.

Also, people failing checks is funny (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RuleOfFunny)

WARNING, yet another TV Tropes link

Good point about the port city thing, I grew up in Hong Kong and that is very loud.
