Welcome to the 28th ABR Discussion Thread!
I've changed the title format. Cue the apocalypse.
Because we used to burn through new ABR threads so quickly, we created the Discussion thread. All banter goes here, and all comics and non-canon kills go in the main thread. (see line below)
Random kills are somewhat less common nowadays.
Avatar Battle Royale: Avatarmageddon (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=7000298) is the current thread. Post artwork there.
Yay, it's fixed now !
The ABR backup thread (http://z15.invisionfree.com/Remember/index.php?showtopic=161), is used in the event of Giantitp becoming untenable due to server issues or otherwise.
Someone should make a TJH trailer...

It's better than those before, but wait 'till you see mine...

Future Imperfect Trailer (http://s185.photobucket.com/albums/x203/tomshaer/?action=view&current=ABRFI_0001.flv) by Nameless

The Avbaroy Wiki (http://abr.wetpaint.com/)
In my opinion, Wikia is better. And we shouldn't use two wikis for one community.
The world map of Avbaroy (http://abr.wetpaint.com/page/Avbaroy)
That map was made by me and my awesome cartography skills.
The Novaris Wiki (http://encyclopedia-novaris.wikispaces.com/)
Wikispaces is one of the worse wikifarms I've seen out there.

Backstory Comics
People's motivation in their backstories are limited.
A Story of Death (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=63750) By Nameless (Currently inactive)

People find that web Active/dead means the status of the comic, not the person.comics are hard work!

You mean how character development and having your character come to life in RPGs is the best thing ever? That's what we're talking about right now.

I would say "leave the comic reviewing to me to do every Friday on The Q's Comic Review (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=126981) and don't quit your day job," but since I decided I wasn't going to review ABR plots because all of them would have the same complaints ("They don't make sense!") and I know that, if they did make sense, it wouldn't be fun to play, you can review ABR plots, I suppose.

So, we were talking about Karrish scribe magic, specifically the Notebooks and the possibility of intercepting their communications.

I imagined all notebooks being linked, like Walkie-Talkies, but there could be "Phone" Versions, perhaps keyed to a certain name. In order to communicate, you write the name, then your message. If you have the name of a certain book, and are a skilled enough scribe mage, you can intercept and alter, trace, or jam these communications with the "Call Name' of either the sending or receiving book. The Wallkie-Talkie varients are more secure, you need a physical piece of one of the books, usually a page, to get to the connection, and even there you still have to go up against whatever measures the Scribe Mage that created the book built in.

O.o way would you need a physical piece?
Isn't like... The scribe magic flows... I intercept it in the air with a very strong scribe magic?

Otherwise you would need to be standing directly between the two notebooks. The magic isnt' Omnidirectional. You'd either need a physical piece, in order to divert the flow, or be standing directly between the notebooks, in order to "Catch" the magic as it flows.

V'icternus

BRC
2009-10-05, 04:21 PM
The problem with the "Standing between the notebooks" trick is that it requires you to know, more or less, the exact positions of each notebook, because the magic will take the most direct route, passes through physical objects, and can't be seen. And by most direct route, I mean just that, as in, if the notebooks are far enough apart, it will probably pass through the ground at some point.

So yeah, usually it's easier to get a scrap of paper from one of the books.

Attention Abr'ers!

After much random banter, chatter and exchanging of links in the IRC. I, in my infinite wisdom had an idea which I passed around the Irc for opinions. And after much approval for my brilliant idea, I have decided to post it here in order to hear your ideas and comments.

Using a live video streaming site such as this one (http://www.justin.tv/directory/entertainment?order=hot&lang=en) or similar we'd have a ABR movie night. One person (Me I guess?) would set up the channel and host the video/movies (which we have yet to select) and we would all watch said movies together.

Unlike Youtube or other normal streaming sites where one can pause, rewind or stop streams at our own individual conveniences. A live stream is one person playing the actual video, and everyone else watching it directly. Think of it like a webcam or a live online broadcast.

The details such as the time/date and our movie/show selection still needs to be worked out.

So post any suggestions, ideas and questions you have. :smalltongue:

What kind of movies? Movies about ourselves, or just crap?

Do we have to participate? Who else will participate?

When will this be? This sounds like it might be fun.

But why wouldn't we be able to pause and rewind? That sounds like it would be for the best, in case we miss something.

Actual movie movies, V for Vendetta, Fahrenheit, back to the future, whatever we can get our hands on. Shows/series might work as well, as could animes. It really just depends on what the most people want to see.

Don't know
Don't know, sometime on a weekend after we've sorted out all the details
probably will be

But why wouldn't we be able to pause and rewind? That sounds like it would be for the best, in case we miss something.
Because it's a live stream, say if I'm hosting the channel. Then when I pause or rewind the movie, it would pause/rewind for all of you guys. But you guys can't pause/rewind it because I would be the one showing the movie.

A few of us are currently watching family guy at the moment. :smalltongue:

It's an ABR plot, and therefore prone to critisism that I KNOW would be pointless
I would need permission from EVERY WRITER IN THAT PLOT, not just you. You did not write TJH entirely.
I ALSO WROTE IT! Therefore, my judgement would most likely be flawed. This is the same reason I am not going to review My Name Is Q or Super Smash B-List.

Keris: So knowledge of whether FFF is going to end soon is 'not important'?
You yourself confess that MM has been saying "FFF will end soon" since at least April. No-one in the IRC at that point, including MM, considered this repetition important enough to get everyone's hopes up, as there was every chance that it would not in fact be "soon".

And why does it have to be someone's fault?
You were the one who said it was someone's fault. Someone else, but still someone.

Gremlin, come on! They don't have any advantage over you except that they know the specific date. You could even say you're better off without anticipation!

It's different, and you know it. 'Soon' meant, to me, 'not for a while'. After all, it had been 'soon' a few months ago. Saturday means, at least, it happens this week. Believe me, there is a difference.

Soon means soon. Just because there were apperantly delays, and a meteor repeatedly hit MM's computer or whatever, doesn't change the meaning of soon. Soon means not long. Using "soon" way back then? A mistake, but either way, it changes nothing in relation to anyone. As long as you check the Art thread when it gets posted on, you'll see it. And I'm sure you will, as that's kind of the point. Also, there will likely be a parade, announcing that "soon" is finally here.

....seriously, I'm sorry, but you are making a lousy argument. You should know that by now, 'Soon' meant 'eventually'. We were even making jokes about it. See the previous thread titles, for example. :smallcool:
Saying that it would happen within anywhere NEAR a week is a big deal. Seriously. If you guys were not desperately defending the IRC, you might even agree with me. therefore, I move that this is no longer an attack on the IRC, but on the way it was managed in this case. There is my one and only compromise here. I am saying only that the information should have been posted here. This, I think, is rather hard to dispute, and there is little need to try, either. The fact is, a timetable--albeit a rough one--was put up on a plot that has been 'soon' for many months, in the wrong place, and people forgot to mention this. Nobody is truly at fault here. It was an honest mistake, with the IRC moving quickly and making some things hard to remember.

:mitd: Movie night ? What movie night ?

The idea has already seen quite a bit of positive responce. So I have pretty high hopes for the whole thing. :smalltongue:

I already have the channel set up, all I need to do now is to get the right movies once the votes done with and we still need to figure out a good time for everyone.

Of course, people can't be firebeavers and abuse this. Perhaps there should be a panel limit?

On plot comics, sure... Random Kills and Paperclip, not so much.

Perhaps 6 panels gets the 5 minimum and every four after that earns another 3.

I've just made the Future Imperfect archive, which will be revolutionary in the history of ABR.

I've used a webcomic hosting site, which is much more pleasant and convenient than the usual "links and posts" type archive, and I've already put the UNA-Alphantica arc of Fat Fish Fury.

No links for now, just saying so Gremlin doesn't start raging like Hulk.

Race for the MacGuffin (cliché and overdone, but effective)

Nothing. We should just let it pan out, but if somebody comes up with a plot we can all follow we should follow it.

There is enough planning as it is. And I think we should allow a plot that can have some manipulation. Allow the possibility that somebody can make a sub-plot that is almost unrelated and that your character could be important.

While this might not sound like the best possible story-telling, it will make things fun and unpredictable in my opinion.

A mixture of

Race for the MacGuffin + nothing
The MacGuffin idea is my favorite at the moment, at least for the very beginning of FI. Simply because it would give people an easy goal to aim for. However, we can't make everyone just go and do one thing. So we should put the choice of finding the MacGuffin out there, but still let people have the freedom to do their own thing.

The "warfare" idea would require far too much coordination between people and would only serve to slow down the plot before it's even started rolling. While I can see it working, I think it's better off as something left until the middle stages of FI.

As for the MacGuffin in question, I'd like to bring that idea up again involving the lich Lor Nae (http://abr.wetpaint.com/page/Lor+Nae). With both the ALF and the UNA searching through a zombie infested city in search of [insert object here] in order to get the lich on their side.

The zombies would also serve as easy cannon fodder, so people can easily show off the abilities of their characters and their side's mooks. That way everyone would get a sort of feel for each others character's before we get into any actual pc vs pc fights.

I'm not talking about forcing everyone to follow a single story, I'm just asking for the main goal at the beginning of FI. People can do anything they want as long as it makes sense and it isn't completely unrelated to the story. The Nothing option simply means that the first comic is going to present the setting and the characters are starting in their own locations, with no aim apart from the "UNA vs ALF" one.

Here are the results of the vote:

City of the Dead (5: Mad Mask, The Q, -skimmer-, Tiffanie Lirle, CrimsonAngel)

I personally think that not all things have to be completely related. It sounds like it would be a lot more interesting and unpredictable a story if we can have seperate sub-plots in the same setting with only minor connection to what's going on in the main story.

Hey Grem...what exactly is this idea, anyway? Just out of curiosity.

Oops, sorry! Here it is:

We have a subplot going, in which my old kobold character(named Graene, not that anybody remembers)and Yeril (heh, just realized that they're both kobolds), and whoever else wants to bands together and every now and then we see a little comic in which they're trying to steal the keys, which I think are currently all possessed by the dragons. If not, then we could do comics where the group of thieves, the dragons, and the third party which has all/one of/some of the keys are all working against each other to get the keys. Maybe there could be another group of UNA guys working to get them.
Thoughts?

Most likely not. In her most recent description, she just said "[insert object here]". I don't think she has anything in mind.
Sort of, I remember the original idea tied Lor Nae to the whole thing. Which could explain the undead.

inside a large black tower she styled herself to have a large emerald eye at its peak, which she has enchanted to allow her to reanimate and control all dead within 5 miles of the tower
Perhaps a chunk of the emerald was taken from the top of her tower by some daring thief. He made his way to the nearby city where Lor Nae promptly used the emerald fragment to raise the dead from the local graveyard, and have them hunt down the thief. During his attempt to escape the undead were dragged around the entire city. Killing most of the citizens and in turn creating even more undead.

Now both sides have sent small parties to look for the emerald fragment which could be anywhere in the city and return it to Lor Nae in hopes of getting her to join their side.

Which would also explain why the UNA doesn't just blow the entire place up.
(Plus imagine the media field day that They would have when word gets out that the UNA is purging a city of undead. Which were most likely created by "ALF necromancers")
[/idea]

I thought of a potential MacGuffin. Tell me what you guys think.

It's known as....well I don't actually know what it's called yet, but I have a great idea.

It's a stone that gives of psycho-reactive waves that make the humaniod mind calmer. That's it. That's all it does.

Doesn't seem to threatening, right? However, this would be invaluable for UNA propaganda. Making the citizens calm enough to obey them. This would also be good for the ALF, as they could use it to, let's just say, make the guards of an UNA building so calm that even if they DID see the ALF intruders, they wouldn't care enough to shoot or warn anybody.

What do ya think, eh? A damn fine macGuffin idea, if I do say so myself. :smallamused:

Hey Q! Love the comic!

Shame about the Qs though...

Anyway, who's this character?

Of course, 0.1% of people affected will become incredibly aggressive instead, as is wont to happen with such devices.

Anyway, who's this character?

Nath Bortak is the gargoyle king, who was a major character in My Name Is Q and will be a major character in one of my other backstory comics, and he made an apperence in FFF as part of my Vert Doom subplot.

Or are you talking about the guy introducing him wearing the top hat? Because I haven't really thought of his character. :smallconfused:

Sounds kinda Serenity-ish, but sure. Why the hell not, right? :smallwink:

OK, this is for the Q&A section in Xartyve's vlog (It's a thing we've been talking about in IRC)...

Why hasn't Paperclip started yet?

Thank you Sinister. Those who have questions for the upcoming vlog's feel free to shoot me a PM or just post it here.

EDIT: Although it is awful beyond belief and I hate the sound of my voice... here it is.

Oh my gosh.

Xart, I've got it.

Bright's minion. The one he ditched and FFF never saw again.
All-Star Bright's Skeletal minion!

Seriously, read Breakfast of the Gods (http://www.webcomicsnation.com/poyorick/botg/series.php?view=archive&chapter=10960), if you haven't already.

Why were you spamming in strange characters?

I was asking Sinister to stop hitting me, and the first one was asking how I did that.

A kick is just a slap on the wrist, which kpenguin, as tertiary OP, is entitled to deliver.
If he actually bans someone, he'd better have a good reason.

Xartyve2000 is online!

Woohoo! And you all thought I ditched it. Between that, Paperclip (if it starts), TJH and All-Star I'll have four comics to do every week.

Me so happy, me want to cry...

Good first comic. Introduces the character well. Just hook me, then thrill me, then... plot me.

Might I suggest you post that in, y'know, the actual thread for the comic? :smallwink:

On another note, my policy now is to wait for two other comics after my own in TJH and All-Star before I do another...

So mush people! Mush!
