I have computer trouble. I was hoping one of you more tech-savvy types could lend a hand.

My desktop is a solid red color. Other than that, I have something called "Security Tool" showing up in my programs list that wasn't there before. Spybot is telling me I have Vundo, and AVG is coming up with a bunch of files that I don't recognize as being infected. I also have pop-ups showing up occasionally, and I can't seem to launch Steam games.

Can't boot into safemode either. Whenever I try it, the computer reboots.

Hijackthis log, if that helps:

If you've got Vundo, you may want to try fighting it with Malware Bytes (http://malwarebytes.org/) or Avast (http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html). It looks like newer versions can go around Spybot.

It'll probably take less time to reinstall windows than to clean all that out. I hope your media is on a separate drive or partition from your OS.

I recently had Vundo on my desktop.. and after three days of 14hr plus running Avast, MalwareBytes, and a few other security systems I finally just had to wipe it and start clean. After you've been infected its pretty much impossible to be 100% sure you've tossed it without a full disk wipe and reboot.

Edit: I did manage to get rid of the Vundo itself mostly, but every time afterward whenever I restarted there would be one or two more trojan files detected when I ran my security. That's why I decided to wipe it, as the security couldn't fully extract it from everywhere it had gotten into, so the files that they missed just started propagating new versions after restart.

I have successfully removed Vundo manually by booting from another OS and taking the thing out file by file and line by line, but I wouldn't recommend it. Either wipe the drive and start over or take it to the Geek Squad. Their preboot scanners can actually completely eliminate it in one pass, but only if it's worth $200 to you.

I think I had Vundo....can't remember which trojan it was anymore. But I was able to get rid of everything by copying down the file locations, going into safe mode, and manually deleting everything. Most people recommend against this, but if you're going to nuke it anyways, it's always worth a shot beforehand.

Avast was turning up files with Windows in the name that it couldn't fix. Is it safe to delete them, or will that fry XP?

Well, a virus typically hides itself in the /Windows folder. If you want to make sure, google the files and see what it turns up.
