If you create a wall on top of someone (e.g. Wall of Thorns, wall of fire), do they take damage instantly, or only at the start of their turn? The argument for instantly runs that they are entering the wall when it is created; against it mostly runs that most people would get hit twice, which seems contrary to how other rules work.

They only take the damage at the start of their turn if you drop it on top of them. It's possible they will avoid damage entirely if an ally uses a power that lets them shift out of it.

In which case, the narration can be that they got pushed out before the wall caught them.

(Which requires that you embrace that initiative order does not precisely reflect the order of events, but includes ability to anticipate other's actions, etc)

Depends on the wall. Technically, a wall is only a zone with a funny shape.

Some walls damage at start of turn; others when entered; others when any square of the wall is entered; others a combination of, or none of, the above.

For instance, Wall of Fire damages at start of turn and when entered; whereas Storm Cage damages when cast, and at start of turn, and per square when moved through.
