An embarrassingly large number of times. :smalleek:
And it's extra silly that I didn't get the wordplay until now because when I was a kid, I was rather obsessed with Pompeii, the city- I wrote a whole Atlantis/Pompeii/catastrophe novella when I was like 9 or 10...

I thought you wear talking about a different joke. I didn't even spot that joke until you mentioned it, but now I get it.

I never figured out that joke myself, mostly because of my utter lack of culture regarding the tragic disappearance of ancient cities to natural disasters such as a volcano going mad. But thanks to these forums, I, a year ago, learned about it!
Thank you fellow forumites! My culture has only increased since the first day I clicked that button 'Forum'.

Vaarsuvius-> (Mt.)Vesuvius
Pompey-> Pompeii

Ah. So that's why Vaarsuvius's name was special. When I heard pompey's name the first time, I instantly recalled the city. But I never knew that Vaarsuvius was Vesuvius.

So now I *am* curious- what other jokes did people take a long time to get?
(I know there's a 'jokes you didn't get' thread- but this is more about copping to one's Swiss Moments - thanks, Katana Geldar- for that term...
what's it called in French: l'esprit de escalier- or something?
related to Fridge Logic...)

LOL
I never seen it this way
always thought V's name was after the Poland city of Warsaw ( in italian Varsavia, hence Vaarsuvius) and Pompey... well that is obvious
But i never thought V's name was after the Vesuvio volcano :smallwink:

I never got it either until now!
Nor it is probably the only one I didn't get. I suppose I could plow throug the jokes thread, but it would be best if there was some sort of jokes list for each comic. fan-made, obviously.

Well, there is an OotS wiki (http://oots.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page). It's not exactly exhaustive yet and it's kinda clumsily written in places, but it's getting better. And most of the jokes and references are explained in each strip's entry.
