Kind of a silly question, but I don't have a lot of experience with Gestalt and this just kinda popped into my mind:

Do you stack levels of the same class on different sides of a gestalt if you take them at different levels? Or to put it another way, can you use gestalt to circumvent the dead spellcasting levels of a PrC?

Example:

Caster 5 // Blah 5
Prc 1 with Caster level // Blah 6
Prc 2 without Caster level // Caster 6

Yeah, you can.

The general rule is that you can do anything you like as long as you are not trying to progress something twice at the same time -- BAB, saves, casting levels, etc.

I thought you couldn't progress BaB and saves at the same time, since you take the higher of the two?

At a matter of etiquette and balance, I personally refuse to "cross over" when building gestalt. I like to have each side as potentially viable by itself, as I feel that's more in spirit with the RAI, but I'm well aware RAW doesn't require it.
