Basic question: I've seen it posted on this board somewhere that wizards and sorcerers can sacrifice their familiar class feature for a bonus feat. Where is this alternate class feature?

I believe there is a flaw (Folorn) in an issue of Dragon that does this.

Most of them are in Unearthed Arcana, which means they're also in the SRD. (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/specialistWizardVariants.htm)

There are a couple more in those nice lists on Crystal Keep. (http://www.crystalkeep.com/d20/index.php) Highly recommended.

Some of them are more worth it than others, as you'd expect. Also, if you still want a familiar, you can take the Obtain Familiar feat and get one which gets stronger with all your arcane casting levels, rather than just wizard.

Forlorn flaw in Dragon 333

for added lolz use that bonus feat on obtain familiar to get one that stacks with all your arcane classes for power. :smallcool:

Huh. As a sorcerer, what can I get if I trade in my familiar?

You get to not suck at metamagic 3+Int times per day.

Yeah, and wizards get options like Abrupt Jaunt, Rapid Summoning, Illusion Mastery, and Enhanced Undead.

If your character has the Dragonblood subtype, you can trade it for the Draconic Heritage feat by taking the first Dragonblood Sorcerer racial substitution level (Races of the Dragon).

Spell Shield. From Dungeonscape. Give up spell for spell levelx5 damage reduction from next source. Immediate action. Quite useful.

Less useful when compared to things like Wings of Cover, sadly enough.

Alternatively, if you're not interested in your familiar, you can always play a Lightning Warrior.
You sacrifice some power for the flavor, but a real role-player can do it!

Darn it, who cast Gentle Repose on this thing? When will it get old enough? Next thing someone gonna say that you don't get specialization so its too weak to be taken if you only want to sac your familiar.

Also, not having heal spells. It sucks.

Fact: WotC hates Sorcerers.

Hmm, I ws needing to be dragonblood anyway to get Practical Metamagic, so I'll look at the dragon option. It's sure better than losing a pile of XP and 100gp when my familiar gets fireballed.

Yeah, my impression for defense is that abrupt jaunt > wings of cover > just about every other defensive class feature outside of IotSV.

I was hoping to go conjurer/incantatrix for this build to take advantage of abrupt jaunt, but 3 barred schools and no arcane fusion killed it.

Abrupt Jaunt and its kin are immediate magic from PHB II, as is the metamagic specialist sorcerer option. I think a lot of people would argue that summon familiar is a feat, and as such it could be retrained for any other feat.

Yeah, this is one of the best options...

I was actually considering lightning warrior, but then I'd just be giving up my familiar and getting nothing in return.

There is a reason it's such a bad tier class and all, it's almost unplayable.
