So, the thing is, I recently found out about that old show, Knightmare. You know, the uber-hard game where a team of seemingly-incompetent advisors would guide a blindfolded kid through a poorly-rendered dungeon, and nearly-always die.

Well, this gave me an idea-an IC challenge by a mentor of the PCs to see how they work together.

Besides the hilarity potential-"NO, THAT'S RIGHT, YOU INCOMPREHENSIBLE FOOL!"-this also serves as a examination of how they view each other as a team and the way their group works.

Of course, this is primarily a skill and RP challenge, but there could be some combat as well, as the denizens of the dungeon attempt to interfere with the game outside of dungeon itself.

So, how would you do this?

have all the players roleplay as awkward british youths refusing to roleplay eas their characters due to embarrassment?

Wouldn't work, imo. The challenge of knightmare was trying to get the team and dungeoneer working on the same level: doing such a thing in d&d is trivial.

"Walk 4 steps forward, turn left, then walk forward 2 steps."
"I do that."

Any way you work it, either makes the game tedious or luck-based.

Of course, if you kept the setting and just put all 4 characters in the dungeon, itd work fine (although it wouldnt be all the dissimilar to an ordinary d&d puzzle-dungeon-crawl).

Incidentally, knightmare was heavily based on an old game called atic atac, which was awesome (at the time). You'd be more successful trying to copy that.

You enter an abandoned castle, and the doors slam behind you. You realise that you must find the 3 parts of the key to escape. Each of you has been gifted a strange power within this place; the ability to use clocks, bookshelfs or beer kegs like doorways. Lets hope the ghosts dont get you...

Combat: without anyone looking at anyone's character sheets or asking anyone about their own character, each player must run the character of the person sitting two seats to the left of them. Does he have a power that could help in this situation? Good question! :smallamused:

That would be even more amusing in 3.5.

DM: "Okay, it's Bob the Wizard's go. Jim, now you get to try and remember which of the 100 spells in his spellbook he's memorised and still has uncast."
Jim: "Uh . . . phone a friend?"
