What a silly discussion.

Dwarfs don't have beards, they have fur.

it just looks like beards, because most of the hair is covered by clothing.
(And their mane is growing longer than most of the rest of their body hair)

But since only male lions have manes, does that mean only male dwarves have beards?

Manely... but sometimes the ladies manage. Are YOU going to tell a female lion she can't have a mane?

So you're saying Robin Williams is a dwarf?

I think I saw 'em in the Dragonlance setting at one point. Races of Krynn, maybe?

Given the Mul are a race from Dark Sun, I kinda doubt they migrated to Krynn. If I recall correctly, Dark Sun isn't exactly known for its planar travel or even quickly getting from point A to point B on their world, considering everything is bloody out to kill you there, so I don't see much in the way of people really leaving. Spelljammers arriving there is something else entirely.

I think Races of Krynn might have its own, non-mul, half-dwarves. I'd have to check, but I know there are some somewhere, and thought they were in one of the races series and that's the one that makes sense (I remember not liking their mechanics and leaving it there). How those fit into Dragonlance I don't know.

Does that mean that male dwarves drink and sleep all day while the pride of female dwarves goes hunting?

Actually, male dwarves don't eat. They filter feed with their beards.

I think they're cold climate types, living to the south. I don't remember the details, though.

.....! O sweet jeebus I just figured it out! Male dwarfs are beardless! They all stay at home tending to the domestic needs of the family. All those dwarfs that go adventuring are in fact the females! they grow beards to hide this fact and to provide the young a safe place to cling!

Also !!!! and !.

They do drink all that. At least that part is right.

Dwarves Deep, an FR supplement, goes into half-dwarves. They're a touch taller than regular dwarves, but considered full dwarves by the rules. Women of other races who can live the dwarven way are thought of quite highly.

Yes, but females still have facial fur.

Only babies (and elfs) have no facial hair.

Further research will be done when someone meets an elf male.

Ever since I started reading Terry Pratchett, female dwarves have always had beard for me.

You all have got it wrong!
And now begins my plan to invade places with dwarven females, mwahahaha
so, the real reason no one knows whether or not they have beards is because, they're all ninjas! So you can't see them!

In my campaigns Dwarven women do not have beards.

Dwarven culture is however matriarchal in nature. With each Dwarven woman having at least two husbands, possibly more depending on social status and wealth. One husband (the Hearth Husband) stays at home while the others wander the world making a name for themselves and earning money.

There are no women dwarves in the setting I'm working on, just like there are no grown-up goblins. They're created when a dwarf magically disguises himself, often as a woman's husband, and leaves her with a child. If the child is born hirsute with a small beard, the parents know they've been hoodwinked, and the dwarf will shortly claim its own offspring. There is nothing they can do about this, since all dwarves are spell-casting, domination-happy badasses who can turn invisible or emerge out of rock, usually followed by a coterie of enslaved ogres.

Dwarves aren't really intended as a PC-option in this setting. :V

Nono, the beard has levels in Ninja.

So you are going back to a more fantasy IRL stories feel?

I like.

Although I fee bad for the Human men. :smallfrown:

"What if just your beard starts to turn, can I shoot that?"
Don't ask me why I am reminded of this, I simply am, and it makes me giggle.

Well in my setting there are no women anymore. Just extremely pissed off men who are split in their decision of representing the last generation of sentient beings on earth as valient heroes, or scheming villains.

Which works pretty well since it gives both of them something to do besides look at porn, weep, futily attempt to summon a female outsider and/or cautiously attempt to experiment with one another/undead/constructs/elementals.

Also, there's no dwarves. Just halflings with beards and steroids.

I find that fluff extremely fascinating.

Would you mind please sharing the story/fluff/etc of what happened, why, etc?

Because the halflings wanted a race they could blame for their misdeeds. The dwarves wouldn't argue (since they are just halflings in disguise) leaving their parent-race safe.

Nah, I know what you meant (the gender thing; I'd hope). That was just a bit of a joke in response to an above post saying "no Dwarven women in my setting". Super disease would probably be the easiest/most classic way of doing this setting. External abduction, epic polymorph failure, apocalypse (i.e. divine end of the world), super spell and/or gender war is the best way to create the setting though.

It was also kinda intended as an "all male gamer" joke. Yes, I know there are female gamers...I play with them too. But stereotypes can be amusing.

Pratchett says beards, Tolkien hinted the same. Did you honestly think the names Fili (short for Felicity), Kili (pron: Keeley), Ori, Dori, and Nori were guy names?

I have a friend named Ori who is a guy. He's Israeli. I always imagined female dwarves as beardless.

Right, so thats why the female dwarven pictures we have seen have had none (only counting decent ones), except for the one with levels in fighter.

obviously so. why do you think dwarves are so bad ass. it's cuz they got a ninja attached to their faces all the time ready to do it's think. it also explains why the dwarves don't like the elves. how can they respect a race that never gets any face ninjas

It's been at least one necro every 2 days I think. Just in this section of the forum too.
Will Roland and/or Giant warn/ban people who keep doing these things?
