Reflex Save, DC 11 or fall prone. This must be done every round. Moving through the Grease requires a Balance Check DC10. Failure means no move. Fail by 5 or more, and go prone.

Still, I draw comfort in the fact that the build did not originally have Stunning Fist: it was added in mid match because one of the original feats was found to be non core.

Well, I'm a greasy stain.

The first round of combat was... hellishly lucky in my favor. He couldn't buy a to-hit to save his life, and the killing blow was a Nat 1 on his Fort Save on my Stunning Fist. I also happened to roll max images, and the few attacks that actually hit me, hit images instead.

Please note: He needed a 5+ roll to hit me, and he couldn't buy a hit in ten attacks. He rolled THREE Natural 1's over this combat, including against the Stunning Fist that did him in.

On the second round, I feel it was much more realistic. I still did impressive damage (80 damage in one round), but he basically has all my tricks, at twice the range, with a higher damage output. My only chance was to trip him up with Grease, or to Dispel Magic his Enlarge Person. Since he'd have killed me anyways if I had dispelled the Enlarge, I tried for an encounter-winner Grease, which would have given me the breathing room. Unfortunately, he only needed a 5+ on his roll, and he still barely made it.

I was really out of options. Retreating woudln't have given me any breathing room, as one hit would have done me in at that point, so my only hope was to force a fort save or die

Thank you, Shneeky. I prefer not to comment myself, as that would be somewhat self serving.

I feel that your monk's 80 damage was pretty impressive. Curse my low AC...

I am changing the Dragon disciple to have Int 14 and Improved Trip + Combat Expertise instead of Multiattack and Combat Reflexes. Skills were, of course, redistributed.

On to the next match. I think i twill be between a caster of mine and one of Olo's monks.

Just popping in to nitpick some things, since I'm sure you guys want to do this with as few errors as possible.


[Kane] casts Read Magic to activate his Scroll of Dispel Magic (cannot fail caster level check).

Read Magic does not work that way. This right here would take 2 standard actions and 10 full round actions to do. Also, you're assumed to have already deciphered any scroll you have, especially if you can cast Read magic, so you can just draw it and cast it if you want to use it, rolling a CL/UMD check as normal.

Also, Death by Massive damage triggers if you take 50 or more damage from a single attack, not 50 total damage in a round. Thus, Pharaoh's Fist should not have rolled a fort save to die.

This was a good match, but your character was better. The mirror images really killed me...by the time that I had taken them down, you had already won. Also, if we had resolved the hiding dispute in my favor, I could have just kept attacking you and running away...something that would work very well if the room was shadowy.

Partially charged wands are not fair. They entirely erradicate the need for scrolls by being 7.5 x spell level x CL instead of 25 x spell level x CL. They are even easier to UMD. Consider this: if you are buying a partially charged wand of Shapechange: 1147.5gp per charge. For this small amount of wealth, you can instantly win D&D for an entire day. You can also buy it as low as 3rd level.

For a true demonstration of the unfairness of partially charged wands, we will be starting the next fight "Fully Buffed".

Also, you used a CL 18 wand of Shield of Faith. Either you bought a partially charged wand that someone decided they just didn't need anymore (rare, for something as useful as CL 18 Shield of Faith), scavenged it off of someone you killed (but how'd he get it?), stole it (possible, you're a rogue/monk/assassin, but then you'd have the problem of what number of charges are in it), or commissioned it (how many level 18 clerics are there in the world who take commissions?).

This was very much like Gladiator vs the party in the Monkening. With few buffs, my monk was beaten handily by Pharoah. With many buffs, I beat him very easily...I still had 5 mirror images, was at full hp, and had 38 AC.

It also fully demonstrates the power of partially charged wands.

Conclusions we may draw: Spell Penetration and Greater Spell Penetration are handy to have in core. Also, Acid Arrow can be deadly if you can wait for 10 or so rounds.

Conclusions for Match 1:

Went as I expected. I was underestimated, and my opponent went in without fully appreciating all of my capabilities. MVP ability for this battle: Spell Resistance. I didn't pass them all, but I passed the big ones. Monk seems to be a defensively themed class, and I played to that. Using vision limiters, listen skill, SR, and AC, I counted on my defensive abilities to hold me over.

Opponent MVP ability: Familiar. That bat had blindsense, and he had the ability to speak with it. That gave him a wealth of information he'd have been hard pressed to otherwise obtain... and information was precisely what I was attempting to deny him.

Least Valuable Abilities this match: AC, Saving throws. Before the True Strikes, my opponent had a 50% chance of hitting me. After, it was 95%. And the class I faced is pretty much bottom of the barrel for attack bonus.

Saving throws? I only made 2, and they were against an illusion. Ultimately, the saves weren't critical in the save or lose sense.

Opponent Least Valuable ability: Mirror Image. As he was invisible, it did nothing.

In depth Crunch analysis:Initiative: (monk had +3 advantage)
Wizard: 5, 9, 14 (Average 9.33, Under statistical average by 1.17)
Monk: 20, 6, 4 (Average 9.67, Under statistical average by 0.83)

Impact: Minimal. Not much was gained by the first round of combat in both cases.

Mirror Image Roll:Wizard: 1. Under statistical Average by 1.5.

Impact: None. Mirror image had no match effect at all.
Ice Storm Damage: Wizard: 12, 20. Average: 16. Under statistical average by 1.5.

Impact: Minimal. A better roll would not have significantly altered the match.

Spell Penetration rolls: 17, 16, 7, 9, 4, 16, 8, 8. Average: 10.6. Over statistical average by 0.1.

(possibly misleading, as 62.5% was the actual failure rate, and 50% was the statistical failure rate, leading to 12.5% greater failures than statistics should have. This is because all successes were far in excess of needed rolls, and most failures were very close to success. (failures were by an average of 2.8, successes were by an average of 6.33))

Impact: Huge. Single biggest factor in this match was this. One more success in the right spot (either enervation roll) would have been another -6 to hit/saves/skills. This would have made me effectively unable to pinpoint, which would have cost me the match.

Attack Rolls:Wizard: 15, 1, 11, 4, 19, 12, 3, 7, 20. Average: 10.2, 0.3 under statistical average. 9 total attacks made (discounted 2nd and 3rd attacks of spells which failed SR on the 1st attack)
Monk: 7, 18, 7, 20, 19, 14, 20, 15, 8. Average: 14.22, 3.72 over statistical average. 9 total attacks made (discounted iterative attacks which were not needed, due to grapple success)

Impact: Minimal. True strike obviated the Wizard's need for any roll other than 1, for the most part, and the monk landed even low rolls to hit.

Crit Confirmations: Monk: 18. Number of total crit confirmations was about right (18 total attacks in the fight, 1 crit threat), and we were both bypassing the other's AC like it was wet toilet paper.

Impact: Minimal. Extra damage by the crit didn't have a large match impact.

Opposed Grapple Rolls: Wizard: 6, 11, 20, 13. Average roll: 12.5, 2.0 above statistical average.
Monk: 14, 19, 8, 2. Average: 10.75, 0.25 above the statistical average.

Impact: Moderate. The grapple successes did have a match impact. The modifier difference of +4 (+5 vs +9) meant that the 1.75 difference in variance did have a chance at impacting the match.

Concealment Miss chances: Monk: Odds of a miss were 25%.
In 9 attacks, there were no misses due to concealment. This is 25% above the statistical average.

Impact: Large. The ability to bypass the wizard's inivisibility pretty much at will played a large part in the number of stun attempts I had, and the grapple success.

UMD: Familiar: 11,9,4,8,6. Average: 7.6, 2.9 under the statistical average.

Impact: Minimal. The Familiar had a 35% chance of failure, and actually failed 40% of the 5 rolls. That is as close to the average as is possible in 5 rolls. Healing didn't significantly prolong the fight, however.

Monk: 100% activation chance obviated the need for rolls.

Impact: None. Dice did not affect this outcome.

Curatives:Team Wizard: 1,4,1. Average: 2, which is 2.5 under the statistical average.

Impact: Minimal. Even though the rolls were far under the average (2.5 variance from the average on a d8 is HUGE), the impact of those rolls was minimal. Even good rolls would not have significantly prolonged the fight, or altered the outcome.

Team Monk: All healing obviated dice rolls.
Impact: None. Dice did not affect this outcome.

Dispel Checks: Wizard: 19, 19, 9, 10, 15, 8. Average: 13.33, above the average by 2.83.

Impact: Minimal. All effects generated by the monk that could be easily dispelled were dispelled on the lowest of rolls (CL 1-3).

Falling Damage:Monk: 10. This is below the statistical average for the roll, 10.5, but is only by 0.5, which is as close as can be expected.

Impact: Minimal.

Will Saves: Monk: 2, 18. Average: 10, below statistical average by 0.5.

Impact: Minimal. Consequences for failure were minimal.

Fort Saves: Wizard: 2,11,17,8,2. Average is 8.0, under the statistical average by 2.5.

Impact: Minimal. While the rolls were low, their impact was also. Majority of the rolls were made with multiple overlapping effects. Odds of succeeding all saves were less than 5% on the flurry round, and less than average on the only other round. Overall match was not changed by the deviation from the average.

As is evidenced by the rolls, they went back and forth, but on the key rolls, on the ones with the biggest impact, things went the monk's way.

This is evidence that a well-designed monk does indeed have a chance against an underprepared caster.

Multiple defenses, Fort save abilities which establish action advantage, good movement, and at least passable detection skills give the monk a fighting chance.

One thing to note: +5 to hit was from a potion. As we had no agreements to use DMG advised cost increases for consumables, and the Test of Spite rules don't call for it (nor does the DMG absolutely require it, leaving is at a very strong advisement). The additional 12,000 gp that I would have spent on it would have come from my Wisdom bonus item (+4 would go down to +2). This would have lowered my AC by 1, and my stunning fist DC by 1. This would have had a match impact.

Well, luckily the Stunning fist didn't have much of an issue. Any time he failed, he failed on the first roll.

Lessons learned: Effective spell selection, followed by even modest attempts at hiding/move silent, make it much harder to pinpoint. The chances to hear dropped by a LOT. Note: My character has maxed ranks in listen.

Other notes: Melf's Acid Arrow is better in PvP. It's not good in group play because of the time it takes to work its magic. This isn't so much a factor in pvp, where you can slow the tempo with the right spells.
