View Full Version : Pokemon Sprites-In need of critiques!

I'm working on a project right now, called Pokemon Amber. It's just for fun, and also to help me work on my spriting (I'm not so good right now, so I've been practicing. I use MS Paint.)
Here are a few things I've done, and I would love to get some good hard criticism.

Frames:

For the images, I just took Pokemon sprites from here (http://www.spriters-resource.com/gameboy_advance/pokefrlg/) and recolored them. For the words, I had to copy and paste specific letters off of an alphabet sprite sheet for pokemon. That was the hardest part. I also changed her hair a little bit. Baby steps.

I might put up more when I finish them.

Hey, don't worry.

Also, you'l find that sprites will gather you little comments, usually, even though it can be very annoying and time-taking work, doing it pixel by pixel.

Really, you should do it because you enjoy it and comments should be a bonus.

I don't really know much/anything about Spritework so...>.>

Good luck, hang on! It'l be a rocky ride!

Also most europeans are sleeping now.

Calm down, not everyone like Pokemon like we all do. :smalltongue:

I don't see much wrong with them. The colors are a bit odd, but that's more my opinion, rather than anything wrong with the way they're colored.

I think there's easier ways of changing text though. Are you making a hack? I'm pretty sure there's programs for directly changing the text if you're making a hack.

Also, I must commend you for trying to recolor. I did it a bit for fun, and dear lord was it difficult. Some looked wonderful without me trying, but some were horrendous no matter what I did. Takes a lot of patience.

I don't have the brains or the software/equitment to make a hack:smallredface:. Although I really would love to at some point. It sounds/looks incredibly fun.

I mostly recolored because I wanted to see if I could. One of the ones I had the most fun with was Professor Oak. Here's a Before and After Pic:

And here's a green charmander I just finished:

I like the Charmander, but the edges are a bit eh.

I find it best to make the outlines black, myself.

Yes, precisely like that.

I dunno about everyone else, but I think that looks a bit better now.

Also, I like the greeens you use. The greens my Paint have as default suck.

Your recolouring is pretty good. I'd like to see some of your sprites for the Pokemon themselves. Here's a few that I made a while back:

Recolours are fine, but a lot of people see them as amateurish. Moving up to edited sprites isn't that hard, once you get colour matching down.

Wow! Those are really good. If somebody had a tutorial to making good sprites, I'd love to see it. I've tried a few times to make my own, but...well, they aren't exactly good.:smallsigh:

Hey, neat. I especially like the pale Umbreon. Anyways, it's just a matter of practice. Grab parts off sprites until you have all you want, arrange them how you want, recolour the parts to the colour scheme you want, and voila! Don't get disheartened if the first few aren't so great. I know my first batch of edits were downright horrible.

Well...I was kind of happy with this one mash-up edit I did. It was a umbreon-mew-eevee combination with a blue pallet.

"This is your next big bad evil genius" = "this is your dungeon and dragons campaign's next big bad guy the party has to defeat."

Basically, Wigglytuff is already a godless death machine. Giving him wings is like giving Daleks the ability to fly up stairs.

I do like it though. The little kitty is very cute too.

You mean like the new series kinda sorta did depending on who you ask, what day it is, and whether the rain in Spain truly fails on the plain?

If you ask me the whole flying up the stairs thing was giving them it but I don't know why (they were epic enough without the ability to go up stairs, they're Daleks).

@OP: I like the sprites; I especially like the green charmander (green is my favorite color and it's a charmander which has always been one of my favorites). I also like the Calko. They look good, keep it up.

I think the problem might be that the outlines are a little harsh. While I agree with Dark Fiddler that black outlines look better, they should still be used sparingly - notice how the original sprites have dark outlines round MOST of the sprite, but the lines are broken in places as a kind of "highlight"? I think you should try to emulate that more, and bear in mind that the outlines around very light colours (and often the borders between two different coloured parts within the outline, such as skin next to clothing) should have a lighter, more neutral tone. In the case of the blonde girl here, maybe a pale orange or brown would look better for the outline of her hair.
