Spells of the Great Three

Three of the most renowned (and unusual) magicians of the age of study were the self-taught necromancer Matriss, her student the conjurer Gerselt, and his student the enchanter Firilius. Each of them were considered incredibly innovative in their own right and were noted for their curiosity in the magical properties and use of flowers in eldritch processes. These are just a few of their more notable spells.

(Please give feedback so I can balance these and feel free to use them!)

Matriss (age unknown, presumed dead) - Matriss, a self-taught magician, gained renown for her, as some would say, mundane use of necromantic spells. She became a powerful force in the field of magical law and regulation and spent a good twenty-seven years hunting down magical offenders before settling down with her first, and only student Gerselt di Sandervutt.

Matriss' Momentary Reawakening
Necromancy
Level: Sor/Wiz 1
Components: S, M
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Touch
Target: Dead creature touched
Duration: 1 minute
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No

You touch the lifeless form and it suddenly sits upright. You make casual conversation shortly and then the subject falls lifeless again.

You can bring any deceased person back to life, but their are several restrictions. Once brought back to life the subject can act normally as it would have in life for 1 minute whereupon the subject dies again. The subject is capable of speech even if injuries, damage, or rot would hamper this process (i.e. lack of tongue, jaw, etc.). Once the subject has consequently died again they may only be brought back to life by permanent resurrection spell (i.e. Raise Dead, etc.) and future casters will be incapable of utilizing this spell on the deceased body.

Material Component
A calendula.

Matriss' Three Questions
Divination
Level: Sor/Wiz 2
Components: V, S, M
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: 60 ft.
Target: One creature
Duration: 10 min.
Saving Throw: Will negates
Spell Resistance: Yes

The young woman offers to help you carry your recently acquired treasure into town. “You can trust me,” she assures you. “We shall see,” you reply.

The caster casts this spell on an individual within range. The individuals morality manifests itself to the caster as an ethereal version of the individual. Only the caster is capable of seeing and hearing the manifestation. The caster is allowed to ask the manifestation three questions which it can answer based on the subjects own moral qualities. The manifestation is required to answer each question however the manifestation only holds knowledge of it’s individuals personality and morality. After the manifestation has answered three questions or after 10 minutes it disperses.

Material Component
A white chrysanthemum.

Gerselt di Sandervutt (479- ) - Gerselt was a curious young boy when he met Matriss. She had been traveling through towns looking for a place to settle down (and presumably looking for a student) when he, unknowing of her position, began to question her about being a magician and what she was doing in his hometown. Taking a liking to his curiosity she spoke to his farming parents about taking him into her tutelage. After several years of training Gerselt began crafting spells, most with very utilitarian purposes. Most of his spells are very whimsical or useful to poorer folk and he is regarded as a hero amongst lower-class magicians.

Gerselt's Forecast
Divination
Level: Drd 0, Sor/Wiz 0, Weather 1
Components: V, S, M
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: 1 mile; see text
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No

Chanting and folding your hands for a short minute you see a lightning bolt in your mind and hear the distant rumblings of thunder. You understand that it will be cloudy with a chance of rain.

You look into the future and are able to see what the weather will be like for the next 1d4+1 (per caster level to a maximum of +5) days with 90% accuracy. The dungeon master rolls for accuracy secretly but does not reveal the results of the roll.

Material Component
A daffodil.

Gerselt's Spontaneous Transference
Conjuration (Teleportation)
Level: Sor/Wiz 1
Components: V, M
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Personal
Target: You
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No

Holding the hyacinth above your head you chant the mystic phrase and upon speaking the final word you disappear.

When this spell is cast the caster disappears for one round. At the beginning of the caster’s next turn they reappear in any spot within 50 feet of their original position.

Material Component
A hyacinth.

Gerselt's Continuous Transference
Conjuration (Teleportation)
Level: Sor/Wiz 3
Components: V, M
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Personal
Target: You
Duration: 1d4 rounds (+1 per two levels above first)
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No

The hyacinths disappear and so do you. After a moment you reappear elsewhere, but before others can react you are gone gain.

This spell acts like ‘Spontaneous Transference’. The caster disappears for one round and reappears at the beginning of their next turn within 50 feet of their original position, but after reappearing and taking their normal actions the caster disappears again. In this way the caster disappears and reappears a total of 1d4 + 1 times per two levels above 1st (max 5).

Material Component
Several hyacinths.

Firilius Quill (502- ) - Amongst the three Firilius the enchanter is considered the most queer and dangerous of the great magicians. His spells are often dangerous and are even banned in some towns and cities. Hypothetically one could use them in self-defense or as a cruel practical joke, but it seems more likely that his spells were invented as a way of torturing others.

Firilius' Memory Alteration
Enchantment
Level: Sor/Wiz 2
Components: V, S, M
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Target: One Creature
Duration: Permanent
Saving Throw: Will negates
Spell Resistance: Yes

You utter the name of local lord and the subject is left stunned for a moment. Several days latter the subject is arrested for not paying his taxes, having no idea who the benefactor was.

The subject completely forgets about one individual, item or location (chosen by the caster). Any memory containing that individual, item, or location is adjusted so as to erase any memory of that individuals, items, or locations existence. In addition the subject contains no memory of the previous and next 10 minutes causing the individual to lack any memory of being enchanted.

Material Component
A lotus and a forget-me-not.

Firilius' Burning Desire
Enchantment (Compulsion) [Mind-Affecting]
Level: Sor/Wiz 3
Components: V, S, M
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Target: One Creature
Duration: 10 min./level
Saving Throw: Will negates
Spell Resistance: Yes

After a series of hand gestures you speak the mystic phrase and the marigold burns up. The subject freezes for a moment and then begins to stumble towards the open fire.

This spell causes no visible effect on the subject until they are in the presence of a flame. When the subject spots a fire he becomes mindless and begins to stumble towards it at half speed. If attacked the subject will fight back, but continues to move at half speed toward the source of the fire. When the subject reaches the fire he throws himself upon it and let’s it engulf him.

Material Component
A marigold.

These seem really good, I think I may have to use them in my game.

Should be were, not was.

You should probably specify that the caster can't take any actions for that round, other than the actual transference, which I imagine involves them walking/running through a magical tunnel or something.

I like this. Maybe cast a spell increasing their speed...hehe.

Just out of interest shouldn't Gerselt's Continous Transference have a duration of 1d4 rounds+1 round per two caster levels above 1st?

I suppose that would be about right.

Thanks for all the feedback!

Firilius' Burning Desire is a bit too weak for a third level spell... it's 1d6 a round if there are any fires nearby.

The subject is capable of speech even if injuries, damage, or rot would hamper this process (i.e. lack of tongue, jaw, etc.).

Not sure I like this. I would say if the body's tongue had been cut out, then speech would be impossible without first healing the damage. Rot, like mummy rot, shouldn't be fixable by a first level spell.

I would change this to: the subject is NOT capable of speech if injuries, damage, or rot would hamper this process. Bring the body back to life then heal or cure him and then ask the question. That can be done in a minute.

Also, Firilius' Burning Desire should be Dismissable (D).

The Transference spells are a bit powerful, they effectively provide immunity to your enemies for a round (and the greater version can provide immunity for the whole combat).

I would change Memory Alteration to an instantaneous duration. Permanent duration means that they regain their memories when in an AMF and then loose them again when exiting it. If you keep it as a permanent duration, change the fluff to suppressing the memories instead of erasing them.

Too low level. Speak with dead is level 2, and even that is borderline too low level. This is even better than that, and allows you to use this in conjunction with revivify to perma-rez someone without level loss. This needs to be at around level 4.

The only answer you'll ever get: "Depends."

Meh, sure. Not very powerful, but funny.

Abusable. Use quickened action to quicken this every round at high levels, and simply refuse to exist whenever most people act.

Even without that, this is 50ft teleportation at level 1 slots. That, alone, is worth level 4 slot, considering it doesn't end your round afterwards.

Gerselt's Continuous Transference

Yay, EVEN MORE BROKEN? This *might* be fine at level 9 spell slot.

Meh, fine. Probably should be level 3 or 4, though.

Balanced. A level 3 SoD, but one that needs a bit of a set-up.
