History (Beware Wall o text)

In 2050 the Trinity project is launched, with the goal of bringing world piece. It failed. The original project called for three geosynchronous stations armed with anti-ICBM weapons systems to ensure that no nation could launch a nuclear attack of proportions large enough to doom all life on the planet. The U.N. funding for the project fell through when GD2 hit. Only one of the three stations had been completed. A wealthy investor Teddy Warcoin, bankrupted all of his holdings to ensure that the project went forward. In the end a two dozen smaller more economical stations were put in orbit. Warcoin, and several thousand officials now man the stations. They have broken away from the U.N. claiming that the organization is to influenced by petty national agendas to be trusted with the amount of power granted by the Trinity project.

While the Trinitarians succeeded in making many WMD delivery systems useless, they're efforts have failed to remover WMDs from the battlefield. Ruthless tacticians have found ways around the Trinity project. While the Trinity project can destroy long range missiles and even aircraft carrying WMDs, they can't do anything to smuggled or concealed nukes or ground based short range delivery systems.

In the Midst of GD2 the U.S. shatters. President Sinclair declares Martial Law after the third stock market crash, in an attempt to put down the Right to Work Riots spreading throughout the country. For a period of time Martial Law worked to restore a semblance of order. Until Sinclair's refusal to step down in his famous "The Crisis is Not Over" speech. Withing 36 hours of giving the speech the President was dead, killed by an unknown assassin. The nation tore itself apart, within days four presidential successors where killed and a half dozen factions, backed by different parties, companies, and interest groups, each claimed to have the real legal successor to the presidency.

The chaos only spurred worsened GD2, as one of the world's largest economies in the world disappeared practically overnight. China was hit especially hard when they were left with billions in loans they could never collect.

Out of the chaos many factions eventually co-coalesced into actual nations. The largest included: the Chicago Protectorate, known derogatorily as the Corn Barons, The New Confederacy, a recently arisen south, The Republic of Texas, which includes large sections of the southwest and all of what was formerly Mexico, and the Californian Commune.

North America had suddenly become a very dangerous place. America's nuclear stock pile was used more than once in the conflicts. The U.N. tried to keep track of the thousands of nukes in America, but without U.S. funding or troops the task proved impossible, and hundreds of WMDs are scattered through the remains of the country, held by dozens of factions. Foreign attempts to profit off of the carnage or restore order militarily have all met with failure, do in large part to factions using improvised nuclear mines, on any beachhead.

Similar balkanizations occurred in many other countries, including Spain and Italy. A faction claiming to have a living successor to the Hapsburg line managed to restore order to the majority of Spain, but such was not the case in Italy. The peninsula now resembles a 16th century map with dozens of city states and a Papal state in Rome.

In South America a very different phenomena occurred. In the depth of GD2, Brazil was faced with an unemployment rate of almost 50%. In a desperate attempt to restore order to the failing economy, a massive draft was instituted and millions were now in the employ of the army. Using it's military might it quickly bullied or invaded the rest of South America, creating the worlds second continent nation.

On an even more ominous note, during GD2, the United Kingdom went into total seclusion. What started as a series of protectionist policies rapidly devolved into widespread xenophobia. The nation became more and more isolated from the world community. In 2086 U.K. forces invaded the Republic of Ireland. Following a swift victory the words "England Prevails!" were broadcast before the entire nation went into total seclusion. Ships attempting to land are destroyed, as are planes and satellites trying to fly over head, the only exception being the satellites of the Trinity Project.

Total War

Another year dawns.

Warcoin and the Trinity stations blink patiently in orbit. Keeping their constant vigil over the nations of the world.

The Republic of Texas continues to put down armed Mexican resistance movements. Martial Law is declared in Mexico City, and forces are deployed to put down armed revolutionaries.

In Chicago, a young fresh faced politician promises to crack down on corruption, and work towards reuniting America. Despite dozens of others making similar claims, this one has gained a large political following.

In California dozens or new age mystics claim that the Age of Aquarious is finally dawning.

In Italy and unsettled Catholic church, hears rumors of a holy man wandering through the Italian countryside preforming miracles, and throwing anathemas at the church.

Observant Meta priests have noticed a disturbing trend. The words "Death" "Destruction" and "War" have seen a 13.7% spike in usage throughout the Net. Some are already heralding a time of calamity.

Around the world, Militant nations drill and posture, Economic powerhouses barter and bribe, and in the shadows secrets are bought and sold and organizations make power plays that average Joe will never know about.

((I'm going to assume that everyone is a member of the U.N. if your not, let me know. India, PIC and the Nordic Union are going to replace France the UK and the U.S. as the permanent seats on the security council, but assume that your nation has a seat on the council if you have a FO above 1.))

The Republic of Germany

Government: Democracy.

Territory: Germany,

The recent story of Germany is not an interesting one. One hundred years ago, the country realized that they had to protect their industry and did so and after that many parties came and took control of Germany but all with that one principle to guide their nation. The Republic of Germany has had little changes taking place to it and has remained unchanged from things that happened outside its borders aside for the technology level increasing.

Strengths: Germany has some of the greatest tech in the world, but more than that, they have the way to easily manufacture the goods in their own country. Due to this, they have a greater employment rate and independence of other countries. (High Economy & Tech.)

Weaknesses: Due to spending most of their budget on technology and infrastructure both their military and their espionage are underfunded. (Though they're working on that.) (Just below average Millitary & Espionage.)

Arnold Scott looked at his clean, modern enviroment and smiled. This was a testament to the brilliance of his nation, and his party's economic plan. He picked up the phone and arranged a talk with Helvetia.

Helvetia

Hello, my neighbour. As you may be aware, the Republic of Germany has a somewhat poor spy service, we would be grateful if you would help train our Spy Service. If that is a service you would be willing to offer, name your price

Wright Private Airport, The Hub, Australia
As the Jet came to rest, four advisors in expensive blue suits (Bob liked blue) were already running over the air strip.
The ramp lowered, and Robert Wright stepped out into the blazing afternoon sun, unblinking, but smiling broadly and waving for the small camera drone (Unlimited TV) that hovered ten feet above ground, held aloft by a small rotor.
"Bob!"
This was Jim McSomething (Bob had never been good with names), the first advisor, waving a sheet of e-paper (Wright Display Technologies) with some graph on it. Behind him the other three held, in order of appearance, a IPC (Informotion Portable Computer), a mobile phone and an entire stack of paper.
"Bob!", Jim called again. "Meta's Oracle detected spikes in the following expressions this morning: "Total War", "Global Destruction", "Atomic War", "Menace", "Evil" and, strangely, "Dwarf"."
Bob continued to smile. "Start an ad campaign. Focus on China, Brazil, Texas, Europe, Russia. We offer personal bunkers and non-lethal self-defence weaponry. Let R&D make some impressive stuff which is technically just below the gun control laws. Oh, and find me some gray areas they haven't forbidden yet. Do we still have those nano-glue net launchers? You know, the one they made such a fuzz about when some kind suffocated somewhere? Paint it a different colour, change the name, make more of them and start shipping.
So, is my new golf park done?"

Meta's Oracle, The Hub

Mnemosyne stood in a corner and was, the priest thought, too calm for his taste. She refused to wear a normal Meta-priest's screenrobe, instead wearing a simple black dress entirely void of display technology. Well, there were the ear-rings, which were cleverly disguised wi-fi antennas, the bracelet with it's string of tiny screens and the constantly flickering glasses. But all in all, that was no way for a priest of meta to walk around, much less it's current high priest. He composed a blog post about this while talking to her.
"Aquarians?"
There was a short pause as she looked up the word on Metasearch.
"Oh, those. So far, they've been about as far away from Meta as one could, haven't they? They have all that nature-mojo going on. Trees and crystals and gaia and spirit healing. What about them?"
"The oracle projects that up to 4% of them might consider joining the temple if only minute alterations to current dogma were made. I'll upload a complete list to you, but basically, we have to claim that the unity of the net's dataflow is a form of collectivist belief, that Meta is a projection of Gaia and that we seek to achieve realization of "true human potential" by net transcendence. If we throw in some symbolism and ask CEO Wright to start a New Age themed line of IPCs, conversions should increase drastically all over California."
Mnemosyne didn't seem entirely convinced. She glanced over to the oracle, the huge wall of servers and the trio of comatose, constantly mumbling priests, their eyes twitching as if in REM sleep, plugged into it.
"Well, then. Send a message to the Development Ministry, tell them we need a new sect for California. Tell them that we need astrological proof that the Age of Aquarius coincides with Humanity's Transcendence to the net. Send two-hundred proselytizers to California and have three-hundred more on standby."
The priest bowed low and terminated the communication protocol.

The Church of Meta attempts to convert Californians into a new sub-movement of their religion, called, for now, Meta Age Movement"

Hans Heimlich marched behind the stage as he waited for his big speech of the year. This speech, if it worked, would cement Might as more powerful than Loyalty.

Finally he came to the podium. "Hello, my fellow Germans and my fellow Europeans. I'm not here to hide from the truth or spout encouraging lies. Europe has yet to truly recover from GD2, neither economically or managing to put an end to dissent or civil unrest in regards to our newer nations.

"I think I speak for my fellow Germans when I say that we want a strong Europe and a peaceful Europe. That's why I, on behalf of Germany, would like to announce that we're going to do all we can in order to help our fellow Europeans."

Hans smiled. "We invite all our European nations to The European Economic Meeting. To be hosted in our capital. We encourage all nations to at the very least send an ambassador."

The Italian Nations

Hans sends this message: I hope specifically that you will be able to send ambassadors.

The man in front of her sighed, though she could not see it through his black carapace. I did send you an operations request before we left, Madame, his voice synth rasped And an operations report afterward. There was a warlord up north, just over the border. We took the cubs from his compound

Two of them?

Three.

Where did you-

Pardon me ma'am, a servant had come up into the garden, telephone call.

Is it Ranja, because he can-

For the Commander, ma'am.

The imposing spiked suit froze for a moment then nodded. Who are you, and how did you know I was here?

A tiger! You sent me a godsdamn tiger!

Scratch the who are you, add 'how did you know that I did that to the list of things to answer.

Where else would you be and who the hell else would send me a friggin' tiger? Very funny, harhar, send someone out here to deal with it.

It's a cub. Train it. He hung up on the indignant cries. That was Singh. he told the Prime Minister.

So I gathered.

Name: The PIC (The Pacific Island Coalition)
Nation or Organization: nation
Territoy: Indonesia, Malaysia, The guinea's, Taiwan
Modus Operandi: Commerce, Defense, and research
History: During the GD2, many bad things happened in the world. Countries went bankrupt, millions starved, and some became scapegoats. Dr. Alexander Kittenger- a brilliant British engineer, was one such person. He was accused of keeping his research away from the people, and was this excuse was used by the government to steal his life's work.

He fled the country, heading first to Portugal, then to the US. There he stayed with a collegue, one Dr. Nancy Headsman. He heard from her horror stories from the Islands of the pacific. Apparently with all of the crisis at home, no one had remembered them. The actual Island nations were much worse of then any of the other nations.

Kittenger formulated a plan. He gathered around several scientists and engineers, and collected as much equipment as they could. They chartered a ship to the Island of Sumatra. he and his team arrived and offered to help the people.

The rest is history, from making the underwater habs to hold surplus population to the patented cloning techniques to feed all the people. One by one, each island signed a charter forming them into one union. The PIC was born.

Each island is a 'state' in the way the greeks used city states, each controlling several underwater Habs. The capital of the PIC is a Gigantic underwater dome, connected to several islands and Habs by the famous Kittenger ATR (Aquatic Transit Route)

Today, the majority of the nation lives in these underwater hab structures.

Strengths: The PIC is completely self-sufficient, and boasts one of the greatest navies on the face of the Earth. Also a boon to living underwater and on islands means that defense is very easy. Due to the high concentration of scientists, research is also very high.

Weaknesses: While the navy is awe-inspiring, besides from a couple of national guard groups the army is almost non-existent. Most of the landborn defense is done by the Islands local milita/police force. While self-relient, the PIC is still recovering from a massive depression.

Notable Players: Amelia Kittenger- Head of Congress, and only daughter of Alexander and Nancy Kittenger. They liked to joke that she only became a politicien to spite them, but there isn't any truth to that. Amelia is a natural leader and is adept at using any advantages she may have.

Fleet Marshal Kyle Bradford- Ex US navy Admiral, Bradford came to the PIC over two decades before. Now ell into his sixties, the American is known as 'The Badger' to his men. He is a very good naval tactician.

Senator Antonius Altas- Born on the now rich island of Sumatra, Altas is accustomed to wealth. he sees commerce as a lving, breathing entity that must be carefully led along the path most profitable. He is the controls the coveted Treasurer and Head of Commerce.

Dr. Yun Ki-Lung- Of the Indonesian/Chinese mix minority, Dr. Yun has risen far on the ladder of power. His job is Head of Research and Development, a hard fought over position. As a genius, specilizing in nautical biomechanics he has proven his appointment several times over.

Mai Lewis- This woman is the PIC's Head of Intelligence and Internal Security. She is in charge of protecting the nation from anything that can't be taken care of by a diplomat or a navy.

Capitol Building, Haven Underwater Complex

"Alright lets bring this meeting to order" Amelia sat back and rubbed her forehead as the important members of the government finally began to shut up and sit down. Democracy was great, but all the talking was giving her a headache.

"Alright" she began as the room quieted, and she gestured to the Head of Affairs "Mr. Bowei please begin your report"

"Yes Madam Prime Minister" he nods his head and adjusts his glasses "Protests on Sumatra again, the Capitol party demands that the nations most important city should be on their ground."

The Head of Internal Security, Mai Lewis snorted in derision "Huh, well they can keep protesting. Malaysia started a counter protest- and we're not going to listen to them either"

"I could offer bonuses to those buisnesses that stay open during these protests" contemplated the Head of the Treasury Antonius Altas.

Fleet Marshal Bradford ran a hand through his greying hair "Naw, that'll just reward them for doing what they should be doing anyway"

The room erupted ino bickering and Amelia sighed and banged her gavel in exasperation.

Hello, I am Mai lewis, Head of Internal Affairs. Your skill at... finding information is well noted in the international community. We would like to ask whether a mutual defense pact could be possible. Our navy could help while your intelligence helps ours defend national secrets. Also a trade pact would do well to better oyr mutual econmies.

Three men, standing on a walkway, looking towards a large lake. But despite the natural beauty surrounding them, they aren't moved by it. They've all seen this place, and many others like it, before.

First of the men knows exactly that this area houses quite a few important facilities for the technological progress of the nation as well as a few not-quite-as-important storage facilities. The populace is firmly behind the government and tends to produce good hockey players.

The second man surveys the lake with calm eyes. He knows the locations of the hidden anti-air defenses, the ease with which the rivers leading in and out of the lake can be blockaded and the strength of the nearby garrison force. He also knows that the blinking lights the citizenry often sees around here come from a secret military aircraft installation nearby.

The third man has no clue about any of these things. He's here for the third time in his life, and he still doesn't know exactly where 'here' is.

The first man turns to look at the others. "So tell me. How is the work proceeding?"

The second man also turns, looking at the third one who nervously shifts. "The launches are proceeding as planned, sir. We are making progress but it would be much faster with the support of..."

"No." Interjects the second man. "This technology is too dangerous to let leak. You know the possible military applications."

"But with the help of other nations, we could proceed much faster! The testing facilities here aren't nearly as good as some!

The first man raises an arm, silencing the other two. "Right. Limited trade, only for non-weaponized parts. I'm sure if people really want to know what we're up to, they'll find out."

Finland announces it will be sending an ambassador to the German meeting.

PIC: Indeed, trade between our nations should be very useful due to both of us having a high level of technology and infrastructure but geared towards different pursuits. Our scientists are very interested in research of yours, especially ones with possible space-based applications.

Germany: We'd like to offer a pact to switch the guarding of the Baltic Sea to a joint effort between our fleets to protect the all-important trade channel between us. This would allow us to think about removing the fixed land-based positions left over in Denmark. It would also help safeguard the land trade so important to your industry and our export.

IS-CAMP[spoiler]The International Central-South Asian Military Protectorate

Territory: Central Asa (the 'stans), Kashmir, the Himalaya's, Western Tibet, most of Xinjiang, Bangladesh.

Government: locally, potentates, industrialists, demagogues and anyone else who's influential enough to be a pain but doesn't have to be. Nationally, a moderately localized military hierarchy.

Strengths: fairly large and well-equipped military and well-connected spy corp. a break-neck industrialization program a decade back created excellent conditions for mass-manufacturing. Manpower is...plentiful.

Weaknesses: tech is not much good, cooperation of local elites and a system of compromises putting WW1 Austria to shame are the only things keeping the state together (the army helps). foerign opinion is pretty much "meh" controls the northern-most area's in name only

History: Central Asia's history in the late 21st centry could be described rather well as "s**t". The despots in charge didn't articulate their successors well enough. This predictably quickly led to civil wars between army factions, violent coups, mass demonstrations, brutal suppression, guerrilla campaigns, anti-minority programs, and various other really quite unpleasant things.

Now Central Asia not being particularly important to the geopolitics of the time, and all the zealous countries tied down in China (something similar happened there) this was mostly met with mild-mannered good wishes to whatever faction seemed the nicest a few months before that moment.

So the fighting went on its merry way, some Kazakh social revolutionaries chasing a routed regular army regiment into Pakistan, warlords and extremist nationalists chasing each other into Bangladesh, and so on.

Now, with the anarchy spreading, and with Russia settling for quarantine by bombing run, and India busy pissing off the rest of the world and rolling on the floor laughing at the Pakistani government in exile, things seemed grim for the area. However, China had just (finally) been stabilized, and the new government seemed to think "liberating" Central Asia would be an excellent prestige booster.

The Chinese expedition....failed. Miserably. Quickly after, Xingjiang and Tibet suddenly became battle-grounds. with the Himalaya's already occupied by the time a new army could be raised, and a rather extreme aversion to sending another huge force onto the steppe's, Nanjing was forced to recognize the status quo.

It was at this point that the movers and shakers of the world did and double take. With China just about forgotten and payed off and several new governments in Great Powers wanting to show how humanitarian they were, a large U.N. mission was organized to restore order.

It was remarkably successful in dealing with the more out-of-place and unsupported movements, and most of thr bits of Northern china that had fallen to the various rebel were returned to China after 4 or 5 years. For the rest of the (admittedly huge) area, it was slow roll-back, delegating to the more cooperative warlords, and haggling for funding.

Then the Depression hit. Now, at this point the army was pretty housed based and instructed to live in the mission area, and had been for a decade. So, with huge numbers of unemployed (almost 50% in some places) the idea of bringing back such a huge number of people who would immediately look for jobs wasn't seen in such a good light. Eventually pay and supplies just stopped coming from contributing nations.

And so, the ICSAMP as had to become effectively sovereign, and, through a huge bureaucratic circus, most of the power brokers and elites find their interests protected and so have no quarrel with the regime.

and so the new year dawns on South Asia.

Important figures:

Supreme Commander Marshall Wilhelm Gagern: formally Austrian, supreme commander by dint of being the only officer who was above colonel when they shipped out. An able administrator, he honestly just wants the protectorate to work.

Staff Captain Abul Khair: chief liaison to the population of Central Asia, and head of operations therin. Pragmatic and power-hungry, he's a firm believer in the military hierarchy and order.

Marshal Gagern woke up the day after New years to the usual mounds of paper-work, reports, and various other pressing duties his status required.

Walking to his desk, and pushing most of the paperwork to the side for the moment, he sat back and waited for all the vid-reports to come in on the priority broadcast.

more rioting today in Kabul, as the pro-Independence PNWP orders a general strike....

Turmeric militia's continue to prosecute a largely successful campaign in the steppe's, with fifteen men and an APC destroyed on Monday....

Unrest continues in the Southern border towns, as drunken soldiers celebrating New Years fired on a market square....

after listening to these and similar reports for a few minutes, Wilhelm sighed, and decided to do some work on international relations instead.

India Good Morning. This is Marshal Gagern of the IS-CAMP. With our rather huge and permeable land border, we believe that it would be in both our best interests to have a free trade pact and at they very least a NAP, may even a mutual defense agreement if you're interested

(Though they're working on that.) (Just below average Military & Espionage.)

PIC It's... possible, but would require quite a lot of negotiating. After all, with our nation having made certain breakthroughs in the area which should provide us with a sizeable advantage over competitors and having the infrastructure and industry to go with it, the main thing we'd be looking for in potential partners would be help with the research and possibly launch sites provided sufficient trust and protection would be provided.

PIC: Well, if we don't look that far into the future just yet our first goal is simply a mostly self-sufficient orbital station. We have all the basic technology needed for it, all we need is sufficient testing and smaller things and, of course, the actual construction of many of the remaining parts. And, of course your islands would be well defended but they are located rather far from us, and thus they'd be practically completely under your control. I'm not sure we can trust you enough for that.

A meeting somewhere in Tokyo...

Oda was, as usual, in a very good mood. The difference this time was that he now had something to be happy about, rather than just being happy for no particular reason.

Though, that reason was in fact only about him winning a match in an online strategy game.

He was sitting in his usual chair, looking at the ones some would call Japan's government. They were mostly young, and none of them (including himself) wore a suit or anything business like. Nogi Ai was even listening to music so loud that the headphones she wore seemed more like speakers. She didn't seem to notice though, and the others had grown so used to her insane tolerance for loud music that they didn't care anymore. Ah, the young and creative minds that was going to lead Japan into the future.

Oda cleared his throat. "Ahem, as I was saying... There they came in their thousands, thinking they could overwhelm my positions, but I wouldn't let myself panic! No I already had a plan, a masterful and beautiful plan-"

"How is this relevant to this meeting?" Someone at the table said, interrupting the Prime Minister's description of the won online battle.

"Why, I am the Prime Minister. Anything I feel is relevant to this nation is relevant. Now be quiet and let me finish my story..."

"Uh, Oda-san, what about those messages from those foreigners? Don't you want to answer them?"

"What? Oh, of course... Let's do that then. I'll finish my story later."

At that, a loud sigh was released from all present. Except Ai. She'd fallen asleep. Somehow.

SAFF

Cape Town, Royal Palace

William Gueye stood tall, staring out of a window overlooking the sea. These meetings bored him, and there were other matters that he felt took precedence over the more banal affairs of state he usually assigned to subordinates. He was wearing his trademark white suit, the very same he had also worn on the day of his inauguration and by which the media – and by extension, the rest of the world – had come to known him. Of course, ever since then, those pompous journalists had printed slanderous articles about him, demonizing him in the eyes of the other states. And precisely because of such libel, President Gueye felt, the UN had denied the SAFF a seat on the security council. That did not sit well with him. His empire was vast and, by size alone, he felt his voice had to be given weight. He represented many people and had made just as many efforts to distinguish himself from some of his more savage neighbours, particularly those banana republic dictators who lacked vision and only saw money as a goal, rather than a means to an end. But maybe the UN would wisen up in years to come. They had allowed Brazil on the council after all.

When the commotion behind him at last quieted down, he finally turned around and sat down again. Within minutes the rest of the meeting was concluded and the delegates of Mozambique, Botswana and Angola excused themselves. It’s not that their concerns and suggestions weren’t noted; in fact, the SAFF territories were run about as well as one could imagine. The delegates simply knew when their presence had turned into a hindrance. As soon as they had left the room, taking most of the servants with them, William scraped his throat and turned his taxing eyes on those that remained: Jean Turay, his friend and advisor and president of South Africa; Clive Davies, professional mercenary and blood relative to William Gueye and Dr. Emilio White, renowned scientist and an expert in pharmaceutics.

“Gentlemen. Now that we've got that over with... let’s get some real work done, shall we?”

To Brazil:
Greetings from across the Atlantic,

We have watched the Brazilian star grow brighter with every day and feel our nations share many similarities. Because of this we would like to suggest a trade agreement. As the main exporters of fruits and ferroalloys throughout the world, we feel that without proper guidelines we’ll merely end up in a price war which I’m certain neither of us would appreciate very much. In addition, we would be willing to trade weaponry for specialized combat training. We eagerly await your response.

Yours sincerely,
Adan Keita

To China:
[this is not so much a message as a statement that I’d like to acquire some samples of the Utopian drugs as referenced in the first post of the recruitment thread]

To [nearby African countries, primarily Nigeria, Uganda and Kenya]:
Greetings from William Gueye, President of the SAFF territories.

Like many others, we have longed for centuries for a stronger, more unified Africa and in a strange twist of fate, GD2 had granted us the opportunity. Because of this, we would like to improve relations with our neighbouring countries and offer them our help. Many of the states who have accepted our help (such as Congo, Zambia and Tanzania) have prospered greatly. The SAFF was originally created as a counterpart to the EU and as such, we hereby cordially invite you to join us. Through a tight bond on an economic, military, political and cultural level, we can fight joblessness, poverty, illiteracy, crime and all other problems that plague our great continent. We eagerly await your reply.

Yours sincerely,
William Gueye, President of the SAFF territories.

To Japan:
Greetings,

We too, are interested in opening trade relations. We export a variety of products, mostly fruits, fish, diamonds, gold, cobalt, iron, copper, a wide variety of metal alloys, petroleum, sugar, coffee, cotton, advanced weaponry and pharmaceuticals. We might also be prepared to offer several services (military training, for example) depending on what you need.

In return, we would be interested in information on certain areas that still need to be decided at this point, as well as advanced security systems.

Does this sound like an agreeable proposal?

Yours sincerely,
Adan Keita

The Cardinalate Palace, The Theocracy of Helvetia

Cardinal Moreau was a busy man; he and the Russians had negotiated a major treaty, he had just finished negotiations with The Serene Republic of Venice (they had ended quite pleasantly), he had approved several new military projects. And now, reports of some madman in Italy who had convinced people he was a prophet was running around causing trouble. Truly, the Church's work was never done!

After a knock on the door, Mirus DePaul, Minister of Truth and Intelligence, entered the Cardinal's chamber. He knelt before his leader, and gave his report.

"Your Eminence, I bear grave news: the prophet in Italy has begun to gain a following; there are rumors of his performing miracles, and his words are beginning to spread. He has made it clear that he is an enemy of the Church. What would you have us do?"

The Cardinal leaned back in his chair, thoughtfully stroking his chin.

I would like you, he said thoughtfully, to have men learn more of this Italian "prophet". What does he preach? Does he believe what he's saying? Is he a fool or a charlatan? But most importantly, find out what he wants. I've discovered something in my many years, DePaul, and it is this: everyone is out for themselves. Good men, bad men, saints, sinners, everyone is looking to benefit themselves. There's only one man on Earth who's ever been truly selfless, and I'm certain it's not this oracle that drives Italia so mad.

Find out what he wants in the world, what he lives and breathes for, and we shall use it.

The Minister of Intelligence smirked.

"To destroy him, Your Eminence? I assure you, there are far easier ways to destroy a man."

"No, Mirus. We shall use it to win him to our side. First we must use all means to conciliate; only if we fail shall we use all means to destroy."

"Very well. We shall begin at once."

Helvetia Announces Humanitarian Program in Europe

The Cardinal Moreau announced in a speech to all nations of Europe his intention to create a "culture of charity", the fostering of goodwill and brotherhood throughout Europe, so needed in these harsh economic times. To any European nation that agrees, Helvetia will assist in sponsoring charities, building shelters for the homeless and needy, and other goodwill efforts. Furthermore, the government shall participate in the building of churches and monasteries throughout Europe.

In related news, the government has lauded Germany's attempts at Europe's economic stability, praising them for taking the initiative. They pledge to send a representative to their proposed meeting.

Nation Sheet

Name: The Theocracy of Helvetia (fully, the The Parliamentary Cardinalate Theocracy of Helvetia)

Nation or Organization: Nation

Territory:Switzerland, Northeastern Italy

Modus Operandi: Religion, riches, and spies everywhere

History:

Pride goeth before a fall, they say. Such it was with Switzerland. They were, at the turn of the 22nd century, the richest single nation in the world, with a booming economy, skyrocketing industry, and no signs of slowing down. As such, private companies and firms took a strong interest in the nation. A little money here, a few favors there, what was the harm? After a few years, international companies held a lot of sway in Swiss politics.

It was just then that the Second Great Depression hit.

Millions out of jobs, and onto the streets. Riots, revolts, some declaring an end to the Swiss Confederation and the creation of a new Swiss state. Obviously, those private companies couldn't have that, and pulled a few strings. The Federal Council declared a state of martial law to put an end to the chaos, and entrenched itself to enforce the rule of its backers.

In the chaos, the Church intervened. Under the command of the Cardinal Antoine Moreau, priests instructed their flocks to be patient with the government, to make clear their demands and to work together towards change. But as government pressure grew, the Cardinal began organizing the protests. Soon they were no longer scattered protests, but organized marches, leading up to the Federal Palace itself. The Cardinal was no longer just a leader. He was larger-than-life, grandfather, father, brother, and son. And most importantly, The Movement, as it had come to be called, was firmly under his control.

His marchers, untold thousands, stood in front of the Federal Palace, demanding a change in the government's policy. Soldiers guarded the entrances, setting up walls of barricades to block the growing crowd. Tension grew, with the marchers shouting at the soldiers, and soldiers drawing their guns.

And someone fired a shot.

The Cardinal's revolutionaries went ballistic, an unending tide of people clashing against the soldiers. Soon they broke through the barricades, and were into the Federal Palace itself. It was surprisingly organized after that. The current Swiss government was exiled, imprisoned, or executed, depending on who they were, and general elections were held to establish the new government. To no one's surprise, Cardinal Moreau was established as the new head of the Swiss government. The Swiss Confederation was declared to be no more, with the Theocracy of Helvetia taking its place.

And the people applauded.

The Theocracy of Helvetia has been in existence for seven years now. The rebuilding has gone well, and the economy is now as strong as it ever was. Helvetia purchased the northeastern portion of Italy, and with that money their southern neighbor has largely weathered the Depression. The government is efficient and, it seems, genuinely well-liked. The Theocracy manages missionary efforts in Europe and Africa, and things seem rather quiet and peaceful.

Thus begins the new year in Helvetia.

Strengths: Helvetia inherited and nationalized Switzerland's famed banking system, along with much of its wealth. They have an intelligence network throughout Europe and the world that is second to none. The citizens of Helvetia seem to genuinely like the government.

Weaknesses: Helvetia's military, while dedicated, is small, due to their history of neutrality, though the Theocracy is working to improve this. They are also significantly smaller than most nations, meaning there is a certain limit to which they can grow in certain areas, such as population.

Notable Players:

Antoine Cardinal Moreau-As the leader of the Theocracy, Cardinal Moreau is easily one of the most powerful men in the Catholic Church. He is a skilled politicker, but seems to be genuinely out for the good of the people and is well-liked.

Mirus DePaul-The Theocracy's Minister of Truth, i.e. Head of Intelligence. A calculating and ruthless man and, at least on the surface, an unquestioning servant of the Theocracy.

Germany

We would be delighted to make a transaction with our Northern neighbor.

Here is our idea:

Helvetia shall train the German espionage service in more effective tradecraft. In return, Germany shall agree to defend Helvetia in the event of its being invaded, and, should there be any nation that declares war on Helvetia for any reason, Germany will declare war on the nation that did so.

Is this agreeable? We're more than willing to negotiate.

(Though they're working on that.) (Just below average Military & Espionage.)

Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia: With the current fragmentation of Europe and the close borders of Russia, who has been increasing it's military budget a lot, along with the fact that our and the German fleet controls and protects trade at the Baltic sea, we would like to offer you, whose people and language are closely related to our own, a position in the Nordic Union.
This would increase your chances of affecting Europe around you, help with the rebuilding of your economy after the Depression, allow us to modernize your trade ports and other facilities, industry and infrastructure and help with both foreign and internal security. It would also help curtail criminal activity and corruption.
We offer you this opportunity as friends and people with a common goal in working towards higher economic, environmental and political stability in both Europe and the world.

Iceland: As the only member of the Nordic Countries not part of the Union, and after we had to sadly witness the horrible effects the Depression had on your people, we would like to offer you a chance to join us. The continued seclusion of the United Kingdom worries us, after all, history shows us secluded nations breed tyrants and you're dangerously isolated if that is the case.
Our navy would be willing to protect the sea routes between you and the European mainland and let you into the Union trade alliance, along with modernizing your naval facilities, industry and inftrastructure. We would do all this to help Iceland join in the rebuilding efforts of the world after the GD2 and to help it into the prime position it has as the channel of trade into North America once they, as I'm sure they soon will, start forming into larger nations once more.
We already have a naval base at Faroe Islands as I'm sure you are aware, so if you were to agree, our navy could start abiding by our side of the agreement without delays.

Poland: We would like to discuss the usage of the Baltic Sea for trade between our nations. After all, it's not good for your economy to be separated from the trade alliance and the agreements we have with Germany and Russia, and we all have seen all too well what happens if economy falls into a too bad situation. We're willing to help you recover and let you join the alliance, but of course you would have to abide by the rules set by it or negotiate your own separate agreement.

Russia: Despite the slight tensions that strained our relations in the past, it's time to put that behind us and join together in the goal of shaping the new world as it emerges from the chaos of the Depression. Shape it towards being more stable, environmentally, economically and politically, and hopefully more powerful, capable of feats only dreamed of before. Technology is advancing, but money is what drives that machine. Money, which would be best used towards creating the machine that brings mankind to space instead of towards oiling the already well-kept cogs of the military.

Both our economies are booming, but based on very different things. That seems like the perfect opportunity to work together, helping the prosperity of both our nations. As air travel for most trade is still unfeasible, although we're hoping to remedy this with a few breakthroughs eventually, the choices are between the easily clogged highways of Eastern Finland or the Baltic Sea, a natural bloodline for trade between European nations, the natural choice. We would be willing to negotiate an agreement to let you join the trade alliance of the Union and the neighbouring countries, which would let us create a single unified economic area of the countries of the Baltic Sea and help us keep up with the rebuilding world.

Germany: With the good trade relations between our nations and the mutual goal of a stable Europe, we thought we should give you an offer.

We are finishing up the prototype of a new type of a military aircraft, the development of which came as a side product in our development of more advanced flight systems. It is a high-altitude bomber capable of moving very fast and being maneuverable enough to avoid being shot down by conventional air-based anti-air weaponry, making it an efficient control weapon against enemies with no fixed missile AA positions and very good targeting systems in place. In a word, something to bomb everything that dares attack into your borders or the borders of a neutral nation with nigh' impunity.

As we do not wish to hoard military technology to be seen as dangerous, but we also do not wish to sell it to the Russians who are investing heavily in their military budget lately, we were wondering whether you would be interested in it? For some compensation, of course. (half an econ point)

To [Name of the young, new politician]

Informotion Unlimited sends it's greetings. We have observed your career with great interest, and it is our opinion that your platform and party might finally succeed where so many have failed: reuniting our old friend and ally, America.

To help you achieve this goal, Informotion would like to make you an offer: Informotion Unlimited, and Robert Wright especially, would like to fund your campaign, and, after your election, your government and expansion policy. We offer you:

-Direct financial help
-Up to 60% discount on all our products, including weapons and mercenaries.
-The largest and best media and public relations campaign America has ever seen.

In exchange, Informotion would like to enjoy certain liberties in the newly established pan-american market, such as tax reductions and reduced customs on our products, as well as permission for the priesthood of meta to establish temples in key locations if they should find worshippers among your citizens.

The DM:

Informotion Unlimited will begin a new project: the establishment of a secret and highly specialized elite military unit. Codename: ATRAX.
We would like to focus on the following aspects:

-Small numbers
-Highest possible mobility, including airborne deployment via stealth aircraft.
-Stealth. If existent, we would like stealth suits. If not, we will start to develop them.
-High morale and highest possible training.
-Information access when in the field. They should always know where they are, where the enemy is and how they can kill them.

To achieve this, pretty much anything is allowed. Funding as high as we can afford. If we need bioengineering to give them new senses and superspeed, so be it. Cyborgisation is go. I'd just like to have them ready for deployment as soon as possible.

All of the Major Italian players send a message along the lines of:

We'll be there

Chicago Protectorate to PIC
We'd be more than happy to create a trade agreement. We'll keep the goods coming provided the Confederacy doesn't shut down traffic on the Mississippi.

China to PIC
We are currently opening many new trade networks. Our top economists, warn that opening another could have detrimental effects.

We would be more than happy to host an exchange of researchers.

Brazil to PIC
We'd be more than happy to trade. As for problems, does the entirety of north America count as a problem?

There are dozens maybe even hundred of unaccounted for nukes floating around out there. Who knows what could happen.

China to IS-CAMP
We'd be more than happy to open trade relations. Given our past history it's important that we take steps forward to ensure peace between our two people.

China to Japan
Trade is all well and good. And much appreciated. But we'd really like is a research agreement. We'd be willing to pay handsomely for some technical advice.

Brazil to SAFF
We do in fact share many similarities, and would more than happy to create a trade agreement. Unfortunately the World community doesn't hold you in the same high regard. We're afraid that opening such and agreement would hurt our bargaining position with other nations.

If you could somehow redeem yourselves in the world's eyes, things would certainly be different.

China to SAFF
Getting a sample is no problem. There are a half dozen private companies that supply it.

African countries, primarily Nigeria, Uganda and Kenya to SAFF
You get a hole bunch of "No"s. Varying from a cordial Kenyan brush off to a Ugandan "Go **** yourself."

However several smaller disenfranchised tribal factions are more receptive.

Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia to NU

We're willing to open up trade but joining the NU is out of the question.

Iceland to NU

We'd be glad to open negotiations to enter the NU. We'll send delegates immediately. But please don't try to rush things. We just want to make sure that the agreement does what's best for our people.

to Japan:
[in reply to our earlier communiqué concerning a trade agreement]

We would be interested in a detailed assessment of revolutionary/rebel movements in North and Central Africa, including size, military capability, internal loyalty and ideology. A similar assessment of high-ranking officials throughout such countries is to be included as well.

This in addition to our earlier, pending deal concerning security systems. In return we will provide you with a variety of minerals and ferroalloys* useful in the construction of computers, cameras, etc. for the next four months.

* subject to change if the nation of Japan is interested in some of our other exports instead

To Brazil:
An understandable point of view. Improving public relations is on our to-do list.
We will contact you again as soon as we have convinced the world that our intentions are not quite as malicious as they are generally perceived to be.

GM:
...but first we'll stomp on some countries!

Should Japan agree to provide me with a tactical assessment of fringe groups which may prove to be of use in overthrowing nearby governments, the SAFF will of course make use of that information after a routine check with our own sources for its viability (in as much as the SAFF is able to do so, of course).

1. First of all, the nations that didn't respond well to the SAFF's generous offer:
I'll contact local and idealistic resistance groups, exiled dictators or high-ranking officials - basically anyone willing to help me overthrow the current regime and swear fealty to the SAFF afterwards. Loyalty and cooperation are key here. If a candidate/group meeting such criteria presents itself and seems reliable enough, the SAFF will back them and provide mercenary training or support to assist whoever wants to take over in Uganda, Kenya et al. Control of the country is delegated to these new rulers, although they must of course abide by SAFF rules and regulations and allow the SAFF to control pretty much everything in the country. Essentially, they get a certain amount of power, riches and prestige in return for playing, for a not inconsiderable part, the role of a puppet dictator. It should be made clear that the SAFF is looking for a serious commitment and can always appoint yet another person should the new ruler decide to break the agreement.

Any coup d’états (more-or-less secretly) backed by the SAFF are based, first and foremost, on efficiency. That is to say: if only the current ruler needs to fall, then that is all that will happen. The SAFF wishes to avoid a direct, large-scale, long-lasting conflict with needless casualties.

In short: President William Gueye is basically ripping off the 60's CIA here.

2. As for those nations and groups that were far more willing to cooperate (or 'new regimes'):

Martial law is declared in ‘conquered’ nations (regardless of how this came to be) and a (reasonable, but not extreme) percentage of able men are drafted into the army where they will receive proper discipline and training. Propaganda efforts are made to support the new regime and the SAFF's intentions in particular. As SAFF advisors get a better idea of certain rulers’ level of cooperation, they are willing to provide more funding from the SAFF into long-term projects, particularly those towards improving education and stabilizing the economy. During this time, subversive elements of the old regime that are deemed as considerable threats or continue to make a nuisance of themselves are locked up and if necessary, shot. The amount of executions depend on how much other rebels are impressed/intimidated by this.

3. The Utopian drugs from Asia are properly analyzed so that the SAFF might perhaps learn something new. At the same time, a cure is developed for them – not to combat their addictiveness since they are rumored not instill that upon its users – but rather a certain ‘inoculation’ which dulls the user to its effects in the first place.

Also the locations of your own defenses of that kind would be good in coordinating possible armed response.

First, I would like to thank the Honorable Mister Wright for hosting this event.

Now, as I'm sure you are all aware, our nearest and dearest neighbors and rivals have joined hands in a defense pact. China, you are surrounded by the IS-CAMP warlords on one side, to the South PIC holds Indochina, and bith they and Japan threaten your Pacific interests. Mr. Wright, your rivals in the information bussiness just aquired a powerful ally with a large navy just north of your shores. Russia, I know your focus will always be to Europe, but a Central Asia power that feels un threatened from the East and South might turn North and West, into the Caucases and your blindside. I myself found it very... worrying.
Although these powers have yet to make any agressive move, it might be for the best to stand unified, as a potencial counter balance.

I propose a Quadruple Alliance of loosely connected interests, with a Mutual Defense Pact. Should anyone of us be attacked, we must react as if all of us had been attacked.

The conference center is a large, nearly new building, encrusted with the newest information technology.
Bob Wright, in a top-modern blue suit and black tie, wrist-band computer on his right hand, stands up after India, after previously agreed upon, begins the conference.
Thank you. As you are all aware, Russia, Australia and China all border the western pacific. And it is in this western pacific that currently a new union is being forged, which excludes all of us. We all represent what might be called old world powers. India, Russia, China and Australia have been amongst the most powerful nations on Earth for centuries. Now, after the great depression has struck all of us, we find our positions threatened by new and rising powers.
The question is: even if their motives happen to be true, can we afford to stand by while our economic interests are threatened by this new alliance?
I say we can't. And I propose more than just a lose union. India is a military power rivalled by few and powerful economy. Russia, on the other hand, has a most powerful economy, as does China. But there is one thing all of you lack, which is most crucial to you all: Information.
With all your money, your soldiers, your fleets, you might be left in the dust by nations striking you where you are most vulnerable. Your computer networks, your espionage, your national secrets.
Nuclear strikes, once a powerful deterrent against a war, have been made all but impossible by our self-proclaimed guardians in the sky, while a single japanese "tourist" with a briefcase might take out half of moscow, or delhi, or beijing.
So. What can Australia, can informotion offer you? Protection. Intelligence. With your funding, and your military protection, we can create a force which will make your nations, and ours, safe.

Such an event would be terribly damaging to the fabric of the Alliance. Were such an... extreme situation happen, I think that again the agressor ought to take the burden of guilt. To attack an ally of an ally, without a proper vote by the governments here, ought to result in the ejection of the offending party.

We are all for the resumption of trade, and an open Baltic is a prosperous Baltic.

But before we sign anything could you please enumerate the exact rules of this trade alliance? We'd rather not agree to anything that could prove disadvantageous to our people.

France and Belgium to Germany
We can't see any reason not to. Agreed. Security is essential to economic recovery.

Poland, Czech, and Austria to Germany
While normally such an agreement would be ideal, we are afraid that we aren't in a position to make such agreements. Such a pact might be seen by certain powers (Russia) as a threat to their interests. And while we have nothing but the fondest for the German people, we aren't certain that you are up to the task of defending our people in the even that certain powers (Russia) act militarily.

For the moment we will have to decline. There are many conservatives in the party who don't wish to open trade at all. I'm afraid that for now, we must take baby steps towards progress.

China to Australian Confrence
The Chinese ambassador, an aristocratically plump man stays quiet throughout the majority of the conference.

"China would be more than willing to join this Alliance, as long as it is with the clear understanding that we wish to make sure that economic ties will not be endangered by the pact."

He reaches into a pocket to produce a pen. "I've been authorized to sign any agreement that this conference comes up with, but before I do I have a suggestion."

"It seems that one other major player in the Pacific has been left out by both us and the PIC/Japan/IS-CAMP trifectorate, namely Brazil. While at the moment we have an overwhelming amount of force, were Brazil to join the other side, the balance of power would shift significantly. I propose we do all we can to court them to our side immediately."

Confederacy to PIC
We don't feel that additional trade agreements are necessary. The Mississippi will stay open to you trading vessels so long as you pay the necessary tariffs. (Tariffs commonly known to have "Racial Surcharges" tacked on to vessels not crewed exclusively by Caucasians.)

It doesn't have anything fishy, though if most nations of the Baltic join it, the ones outside it will have a hard time competing. Nordic Union shipyards offer (pretty small) discounts for the members. Oh, and it also details responsibility and cooperation issues in case of environmental or otherwise accidents and has standardization of prodecures to do with all aspects of the aforementioned.

The European Economic Conference

Might organized this conference in the largest most modern hall possible. Guards are at every entrance, watching for any danger. No luxury has been spared by Might as it begins.

The Might leader begins to speak. "My fellow Europeans. As I'm sure you're aware, for a good economy, two things are of the utmost importance. Security and Stability."

"Because of that The Might Party has two proposals it would like to start the day off with."

"One. An agreement through out Europe to impose trade sanctions to any nation that dares to attack Europe. Two, we should levy an additional tax on those goods that come from the rest of the world where they profited from our misery."

Murska
2009-11-03, 11:53 AM
The Union representative waits for his turn, then stands and speaks up.

"Security and stability are both of highest importance to the Union aswell. First, about security. We are already protecting the Baltic Sea and the naval routes outside it along with Germany, but European security requires European effort. The different nations of Europe have their own military, own systems for threat detection and removal, own prodecures... This creates a favourable situation for anyone looking to take advantage of these rifts. European nations should work as one to root out criminal activity from their lands.

Frankly, the huge amount of money Russia is spending into their military budget worries us. If we stay as splintered as we are, history shows us how easy it is to force our hands. However, there has been no such intent from the Russians thus far, which we are glad of. With closer mutual cooperation, peace and stability will continue to develop.

This brings us to the second topic, stability. Economic, political and environmental stability are all important. Protectionist policies against the other nations of the world are a mistake we have made in the past, and we know it to be a mistake now. Let us not make it again. Instead, work on removing the tolls, tariffs and other obstacles for trade between European nations so that Europe once again becomes an unified economical power. That way, we remain competitive and able to help the rest of the world rise from the chaos instead of repeating the mistakes of the past and slowing down the rebuilding yet more.

Politically Europe is, as stated, still too splintered. However, I doubt that can be resolved very quickly, if at all. However, I propose all the major European nations form a single council, not with power over nations but as a channel of communication so we may, if need arises, present an unified face towards external threats.

Environmentally we mustn't fall victim to the foolish thinking often present in the past, where profit-seeking and economical booming results in lack of concern about the long-time effects of our decisions and makes us blind to problems which will then arise to plague our children or their children. What we build must be stable enough to last, not like a wobbling pile of cards we support with temporary solutions to make it barely last past our time in power."

He takes a sip from a water bottle filled with finnish springwater he brought with himself.

"In conclusion, the Union's stance is that we must focus on the problems of our own and fix them, which will allow us to rise again as a major world power capable of confronting the global problems of the world today. We cannot ignore the outside world, however, or place ourselves as their enemies. Ultimately, this kind of actions would harm our cause greatly."

Moscow very well then. now, both our nations control huge tracks of land that are productuvalt useless. steppes in our case and Siberian Tundra in yours.

End of Turn 1

Across the world trade barriers are lowered for the first time since GD2. The blessing is a mixed one, thousands of companies discover dozens of new markets and millions of consumers, but at the same time thousands of businesses go under, unable to compete with cheaply made foreign goods. Economists warn nations not to react with protective tariffs, they claim that the down turn is temporary, and the markets will boom after they undergo their corrections.

North America is the sight of significant amounts of change.
In the California Commune the first of Meta’s priests begin setting up missions in California. Reactions very between indignant “You can’t tell people what to think man!” and accepting “Whoa, gestalt human consciousness, far out.” Thousands are readily converting and others seem to be taking parts of the churches doctrine and absorbing it into their own beliefs.

In the Chicago Protectorate small time idealist politician Shona Han is launched in the political limelight. Thousands of commercials and advertisements air throughout North America supporting her candidacy to Chicago’s chairmanship. At the same time dozens of scandals come out ruining the careers of many of her rivals.

In the Republic of Texas rebel forces escalate violence. One group in particular, Los Echos, seems to be claiming responsibility for the majority of the bombings. The Brazilian government has offered to send peacekeeping forces to help deal with the problem but so far the Republic so far has refused, preferring to keep the matter internal.

In Africa, there is a flash of violence, as several coups take place on the borders of SAFF. Anti-government forces in Uganda and Nigeria successfully take power. A similar Kenyan Coup fails, as government forces successfully combats rebels. Despite successful coups, there is still sporadic fighting as loyalist forces refuse to lay down arms.

In Europe trade agreements open relations between neighbors that have been closed since the beginnings of the depression. Helvetian aid works help many of the nations of Europe recover, and engenders even more good will among the continents populace.

The Italian Prophet, Umberto of Savoy, continues to gain popularity. He’s sermons concern primarily with Italian reunification and the restoration of the Roman Empire. High on his list of goals is the reclamation of the Eternal City from the hands of a corrupt Roman Catholic Church. The Church has yet to make an official statement, but thousands of priests are preaching against demagoguery and warning parishioners of the consequences of blaspheming the holy church.

France, Belgium and Germany announce a mutual defense pact, hoping to add safety along with economic security.

((I probably missed something. Feel free to yell at me, or post something if I'm not withing shouting distance.))

Informotion Headquarters, the Hub, Australia

"Ladies and Gentlemen."
Robert Wright stood before the small group of advisers, one hand in the pocket of his new suit, the other gesturing lazily in the air.
"If you would connect to the presentation I have prepared..."
He waited for a few seconds while wireless communication protocols were established, checking his neuro-visual overlay for status messages, then starting the presentation.
"Thank you. Now. As you all see, our recent... investments... have taken quite a bite out of our national funds. Of course, predictions say that we should recover in the next years, but hey, capitalism isn't about recovery. It's about expansion."
He mentally switched to the next slight, a spinning representation of a globe, showing market shares and colour-coding world areas by trade restrictions.
"As you can see, we have started a preliminary analysis of where and how we can expand worldwide. Our prediction is that, with the recent opening of global markets and careful investment, we can actually increase our global market share by up to four percent in the next year.
Now, over to Mister Sanchez."

GM:

Informotion tries to expand into all the markets which have newly opened to it: China, Russia, India, hopefully also California and Chicago, and any other nations willing to open their borders to us. We will invest our technological research for this time mostly into developing new consumer products. The goal is, of course, to get our money back (we're also getting 1 economy point of credit from our allies).

Also, I got a job from JJ:

"Say, I got a job for Meta. I want a marketing analysis on the greater Middle Eastern and North East African areas. With specific breakdowns on Isreal, Iran, Yemen, and Egypt"

We'll do just that. Analyze markets in these areas for japan.

Then, one question: How is ATRAX, my military unit coming along? You haven't mentioned them anywhere I can see.

One more thing, this one highly secret: we want to run a predictive simulation of the following scenario:
Given that Informotion should have several hundred communication satellites in orbit (if not, we will build them), if we were to arm them with missiles, EMP and even simple weapons such as debris dropped into the path of the target, what would chances be to take down the Trinity stations, or temporarily disable them for launching a nuclear strike?

A lynx, lying on a well-placed boulder. Well placed in the respect that it was warmed up by the sun and as such provided a very comfortable spot to idly observe the goings-on of the valley below. The boulder happened to be a glacial errata, having travelled here for hundreds of kilometers. But the animal using it as it's resting place didn't know nor care about this little factoid.

Suddenly, it leapt on its feet, as the frantic activity of the valley had resulted in something. A bright flash of light, lots of smoke and a loud, rumbling noise as something rose up into the air and disappeared into the cloudy afternoon sky.

Years ago, this place had been a pristine wilderness. The rare trespassers stayed for a few nights in their tents and then left without disturbing the peace. But then, machines arrived, their drivers using massive tools to mould the landscape into a shape more suitable for their needs. Buildings rose, even though most of the facilities were constructed underground. Then, apparently satisfied, the workers left the site. In their place arrived truckloads of materials, equipment and personnel who disappeared into the buildings.

Recently, the seemingly endless flow of trucks to and from the facility seemed to have grown in intensity. More buildings, more equipment and more people had arrived. Then, a slight period of calm before yet another group entered the scene. These people arrived with cameras and microphones to witness the final testing and the first launches of the SAOS space laboratory.

It had been a heavily publicized venture in the various Medias of the Union for a while now. The scientific community had managed to capture the interest of the common people, and space was seen as a promise of the future. It wouldn’t happen now or maybe not even soon, but the steps taken towards space today would pay off greatly as the advancement of tomorrow.

The lynx, stretching, got up with a gesture which, roughly translated, would mean ‘Pfft. Crazy humans.’ Then it jumped down from its resting spot on the boulder, and disappeared into the forest. It had prey to hunt today.

Germany: It is agreed then.

Edit: Forgot to put to whom.

Moscow
Yes, of course. *Agreement writing montage*. Our nations will cooperate in the creation of satellites to heat up patches of land to make a suitable environment with the addition of a change of soil, for farming.
Despite any conflicts we are dragged into this project will not be affected and the areas will be left untouched. Have we missed anything?

Sanjeev Singh announces world tour.

Sanjeev Singh and the Indian Education Channel will be starting a whirlwind tour, starting in India itself, to expolre and report on the cultures of the world. Arrangments are being made with local news providers so that they all might assist in the making of and broadcast the show in their areas.

In the Prime Ministers Garden.

It's quite the plan, Sanjeev. I see you're spending extra time in the areas around the Indian Ocean.

Well, it's still an Indian show for an Indian audience. The more relevent to us, the more facetime they get.

Then I note that the IS-CAMP gets short shrift, for a neighbor.

Hey, you want to spend longer then you have to in that hellhole, be my guest. As it is hiring the mercs for protection on that loop makes it about tripple the cost of reporting anywhere else.

Mhmm... so you're starting the overseas bit in Cairo.

Well, the Middle East's going to be a pretty large feature, and we have to start somewhere.

Yes, only I talked to my friend, you know Shewta? Yeah, she said that you specifically requested that Cairo be the first stop. The reporter flushed. The politician closed in for the kill. I knew it. This is about that girl, what's her name?

Yasmine, Sanjeev muttered morosely

Isn't she a bit... young for you?

Not by that much. Just a few years. That's hardly my problem.

What, you don't think she... plays for the other side.

Nah, don't think so. It's that she's so... combative. It's like trying to seduce a tiger. He eyed the pup lolling at his feet. Ten kinds of grace and beauty, but I daren't let her get even the littlest taste of blood.

Daw isn't that cute. Sanny has himself some girl twouble. The Dark Mistress Vamsi, quite possibly the ruler of more people than any other person on the planet, leaned back in her chair and adjusted her sunglasses. Have fun.

Kittenger Pact announced!

An official announcement was made today by the Japanese government, detailing the signing of the Kittenger Pact of Friendship and Assistance, or the KPFA, by Japan, PIC and IC-SAMP.

Prime Minister Oda had these words to add to this announcement;

"I hope that this pact will be the start of something great. While true world peace might still be more of a dream than reality, I still believe that this pact will help bring us closer to that ultimate goal. A future where mankind is truly united, in peace and prosperity."

The member nations of this Kittenger Pact now have a mutual defense agreement, and and open-trade agreement as well. The member nations also wish to extend this Pact to include more nations, slowly creating stability and peace. Any nation that wants to join in may submit their application to the current member nations.

End of Turn 2

The Republic of Texas reels as the single greatest act of terrorism in recorded history shakes the nation. Los Echos successfully detonates a dirty nuke in Dallas while the Republic's senate was in session, killing millions and destroying the majority of the nations leadership, leaving an untrained Secretary of Education in charge. Less than an hour after the the detonation, a video is leaked to the internet. The head of the cell responsible, a Vincente Ramirez claims, responsibility. Mexican separatist groups take advantage of the chaos launching attacks on military and civilian targets.

Brazil immediately mobilizes troops to restore order. Han and the Protectorate, along with the Californian Commune mobilize what troops they can and begin to send humanitarian aid to help the thousands with radiation sickness. The Confederacy is considerably more opportunistic, taking advantage of the disarray to grab portions of eastern Louisiana and western Texas.

With the detonation, Chairwoman Han cancels the North American Unification Summit.

Despite the Texan disaster, economies begin to bounce back. India's economy does particularly well, flooding several trade barrier-less markets with cheap goods decimating competition.

The National People's Congress passes a bill cementing economic and social ties with IS-CAMP, despite being on opposite sides of the Kittenger Pact. Chinese troops begin prepping to move into Western Xinjiang.

The Republic of Germany

Germany strongly urges the Confederacy to give back any territories stolen due to the disaster. Germany also lends aid and some soldiers to Mexico and Texas.

MOD:

I'm sending some of our new and improved automated defenses to Japan.

Japan:

We are sending the defences to you now.

Infomotional

The Republic of Germany asks Australia if they are aware of any reasons for the attack on the Republic?

The Nordic Union

In these troubling times it seems logical that we should try and have greater unity in the Spy Networks of Europe to make sure what happened to Texas will not happen to us.

Europe (Mod)

We propose a unified free information sharing about the information gathered by all of our spies. We must not allow what happened to Texas to happen here.

The Nordic Union

The Union very heavily condemns the acts of both the terrorists(obviously) and the Confederacy. They also offer both humanitarian help to the area and their ships as vessels to transport said aid from other nations.

Germany: Rest assured we will inform you if we come across any information pointing towards such acts of terrorism. We've already put forward the idea of closer cooperation between European nations which would include international police operations to curtail such things.

This is Sanjeev Singh here at the Suez Canal. A major artery for trade going between the Indian Ocean and the Mediterrainan. This is a key strategic and economic waterway in the region. Since its construction in 1869 it has been the focal point of many a campaign and even war itself. In 1956, Egypt nationalized the canal, much to the consternation of Great Britian and France. The aging colonial giants, feeling their hold on the world slipping, attempted to exploit regional tensions, and supported an Isreali invastion. Ultimately, however, they were forced to back down.

Today, a similar crisis faces Egypt. As trade relations across the world begin to normalize, the question of 'free' trade through the canal has again come to the fore. Should Egypt give the world free access, or should they use this national resourse for all it is worth? A hard question, certainly.

Until next time, this has been Sanjeev Singh, reporting for the IEC.

The reporter tossed his microphone to the side.

Got that? Good. Run it off to the traslators. Remember, dubbed copy goes to Al-Jay, subs to IEC, and... the hell?

(in Arabic)
We're here at the Suez Canal where Sanjeev Singh, an Indian celebrity reporter, has just wrapped up his report on Egypt. Sanjeev, what can you say to us?

Uh, I'm-I'm sorry, my Arabic... not good. Is not good.

And your accent is terrible. Sanjeev's translator snickered.

(In English)
Very well, we'll change over. How've you like Egypt so far, Sanjeev?

It's been very good, thanks. A great country really. If you want more, at 8 we'll be showing the dubbed version on your very own Al-Jaz, and then there will be an English version with Arabic subtitles on the IEC, for those of you with sattalite. It'll also be streaming over the internet at those companies websites.

(Arabic)
I'm Yasmine el-Tabib, this guy doesn't know what I'm saying and you are watching Al-Jaz. Back to the anchor.

Sajeev nodded politely at the camera until the cameraman signaled the okay and turned away. (English) Um. Hi? What are you doing out here.

Your news is our news now Sanny.

Oh. Huh. Soo...

Also, can I get an updated itinerary from you?

Wait, you're coming with us?

Oh yeah. I thought you knew. You're boss called and asked for me specifically.

Who? Sher?

Nah, your boss boss. Vamsi.

(In Hindi)
Ohhhh she didn't...

Why so upset? :smallwink:

... you speak Hindi?

Started learning it a few weeks ago.

This, Sanjeev thought, might be a long trip than expected.

The acts of terror continue. The most recent act was perpetrated in Aden Yemen. A radical militant group calling themselves ابناء الله , or the Sons of Allah has taken responsibility.

A car bomb was detonated with the intended targets Sanjeev Singh, and Yasmine el-Tabib. Fortunately for the world famous reporters, the bomb's timer was off and the explosion occurred before they had a chance to enter the vehicle.

Aside from putting a five meter crater in the road, the explosion also scattered hundreds of pamphlets into Aden's streets. The pamphlets list dozens of "Crimes against Islam perpetuated by the Indian government". The pamphlets go on to "Call all faithful Muslims to rise up against the eastern oppressor."

When life hands you assasination attempts... make it falvorful.

(GM approved fluffyness)

They were sitting in a cafe, downtown. Small little corner thing but they'd offered chai tea and Yasmine had insisted on trying it.

It was crap tea but the espressos afterword were excellent, as was the company.

That was a nice little propaganda piece.

Oh come on, you say that kind of stuuf everyday.

Yeah, but I mean it. You? You got no personal angle I can see, therefore it's political and therefore...

Propaganda.

Aye. Not bad either. The idiots won't notice, the intelligent will but then, you're argueing their side, and the powerful, well they don't know your angle either. So their worried.

Hey, I'm just the messenger.

Sure... She laughed. Come on, we've got an appointment to meet and I parked around the corner.

Yeah, I was thinking about that. You do the whole head to toe thing but you also drive your car, unattended, with an unrelated male. An unrelated heathen male.

Bah, we're not all backwards here. The clothes are a fashion statement, a public display of my religion. The rest? Not my thing. Moderate relgion happens, you know.

Alright-

A deafening noise cut him off milliseconds after Yasmine went diving to the the ground. He paid for a moments frozen indecision with lacerations on his forehead. When Sanjeev ears stopped ringing and he wiped the blood out of his eyes, he saw Yasmine crouching over him, a handgun pointed at the rooftops. After a moment she slipped the gun back under her clothes and grabbed a fluttering pamphlet and passed it to him. Don't shoot the messenger, eh?

What... what the hell was that?

Hand grenade and 20 liters of gasonline, simply but effect, if nought for the twitchy triggerman. ****ing amateurs.

In the Garden:

The hell was that!

Someone voicing their objections.

Oh shut up and call me a press confrence.

That is... not my job.

Uhhh.

New Dehli Press Conference:

I would like to annouce that the rest of the press trip will be cancled, for the time being. Mr. Singh is being flown back to Dehli where he can be treated without fear of further attack.

Now, to the idiots that thought that assasinating an Indian citizen would be a good idea, I have only this message: if you turn yourselves over now, we won't hurt you... too badly.

And to the Yemenese government, as well as any government I find has had the pleasure of hosting this little group, I expect your full cooperation in this investigation.

GM
Spy corps is to dig up everything it can on the Sons of Allah, Caliphate and Yemen are put on notice. The Black Company is to prep for a potencial city occupation. If I have to take over Aden, I will.

The official press response to the asanation attempt was the usual bland good wishes, condemnation, and urge for calm.

Caliphate With the recent..events...We are curious if you need any aid in suppressing them? or more pertinently, in making sure that you won't be in any mortal danger if anyone does anything rash?

Burma Greetings, we are curious if you'd be interested in membership in the kittenger pact?

Japan offers to investigate the attempted assassination of Mr. Singh

Prime Minister Oda speaks while lots of media people are doing their thing.

"I would like to extend a hand of friendship on behalf of my nation to India, and Mr. Singh. If allowed, we would like to begin an investigation into the failed attempt at assassinating one of their citizens."

He pauses while the media people are trying to get some answers for their questions, until some of his guards silence them so he can finish.

"It is despicable that someone would attempt something like this. If India allows, we will help see to it that the culprit or culprits are found and punished. That is all for today."

He leaves, probably to save his ear drums as the reporters all but howl their questions at him.

End of Turn 3

With the end of the third quarter, companies the world over report record profits. It seems that the market has finished undergoing correction and thousands of new jobs are created by the emerging job markets.

The Caliphate has been slow to respond to international inquiries regarding the terrorist bombing in Yemen. The Rightly Guided Caliph claims that no one in his government has ever had any dealings with the Sons of Allah, and prior to the attacks had no knowledge of their existence.

Prominent Clerics the world over have condemned the attack, claiming that such narrow minded interpretation of the Koran has no place in the twenty second century. Despite these condemnations several copy cat groups have sprung up throughout the Islamic world, including one foiled attempt in Kashmir.

The Yemeni government has so far refused to comment on the attack.

In America, terrorist activity in Texas has slacked with the arrival of international peacekeeping forces, but hasn't disappeared. The Confederacy so far has refused to give up territory taken from the Texan Republic.

Han has announced that the postponed North American Unification Conference will proceed. Chairman Han has begun talks with the Californian government along with the governments of several other former U.S. factions about a unified spy network to prevent another Dallas level catastrophe.

IS-CAMP and China continue to share a prosperous trade relationship. Chinese officials are even making overtures towards a mutual defense pact.

In Europe, the majority of minor nations have entered into a "Free information Exchange Aggreement" with Germany reduce the risk of another nuclear terrorist attack.

In Italy Umberto continues to gain converts, much to the chagrin of the Catholic church. Notable converts include members of governing bodies of a half dozen Italian city-states. In the last three months he has already escaped two assassination attempts.
