View Full Version : Say what!?

I was reading the Epic Level Druid entry in the DMG 3.5 and notice a line that made me, well, read the title.

"An epic level druid may have a maximum number of animal companions equal to twice her class level, as normal."

Say WHAT!?

Erratas are fun to look up when you think something is in error.

Epic Druid
Dungeon Master’s Guide, page 208
Problem: Druids no longer get multiple animal companions.
Solution: Replace the Animal Companion paragraph with the
following text:
Animal Companion: The epic druid’s animal companion
continues to increase in power. At every three levels higher
than 18th (21st, 24th, 27th, and so on), the companion gains
+2 bonus Hit Dice, its natural armor increases by 2, its
Strength and Dexterity modifiers increase by 1, and it learns
one additional bonus trick.

Pity, I like the idea of a druid with 40HD worth of companions.

The animal companions then combine into BEARTRON!*

Beartron is a massive bear made up of many smaller bears. It cannot be stopped.

Kill, my little army of fleshrakers. Kill! Kill!

Meh. Why not? If a wizard can have an army of snowmen with the powers of Vecna at level 13, I see no problem with 40 bears with better than average powers for a druid at epic.

Actually it's not even an epic level thing. Note the "as normal". Druids used to be able, in 3.0, to have twice their number in HD worth of animal companions if they didn't travel, and just stayed in their home territory. If you were wandering around, you could only have your level in HD worth, not double.

And a ring of animal friendship would let you have even more than that.

I forget how much they added, but it was kind of insane.

Darn... Druids need all the help they can get, especially come epic level. They should get 40 level15 familiars, otherwise it's just not fair! :smallfrown:

Yep. There was no real update to Epic Rules from 3.0 to 3.5. The bulk of it is just Copy Pasta. Closest thing to actual revision is bits of errata on things that obviously don't work that way anymore.

Bah! A 4th lvl Commoner/Marshal (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=7097263&postcount=38) can controll three 36HD dinosaurs, so who's epic now?

I know a lot of people here gotta squash all disagreement about class X the moment it arises, but just let it be. Things outside these forums are not the same as things inside these forums. While unoptimized druids don't suck, it is easily possible to be sub-par. It really has happened a billion times before, I heard about it all the time and see it first hand too. Get over it. If you wanna talk theory OTOH, that's different but oh wait, I've heard too much of that already. We really don't need 100 posts a day about the theoretical power of class X.

EDIT: Oh wait, he's a barbarian in the playground. Maybe it was sarcasm. I got no way to tell though, and the point holds either way.

Druids will be unable to keep up with other classes if they can't move entierly by crowd surfing on top of dire bears.

Yeah, but polymorph in 3.0 was noticeably less broken.

I wonder if there's a way to exploit 40+ animal companions. Like making them explode via a druid/necromancer combo or something.

Oh yeah, lots of ways.

My friend once played a druid with a horde of dire weasels. SOunds silly, until you look at what they can do:

Attach (Ex)
A dire weasel that hits with its bite attack latches onto the opponent’s body with its powerful jaws. An attached dire weasel loses its Dexterity bonus to AC and thus has an AC of 12. An attached dire weasel can be struck with a weapon or grappled itself. To remove an attached dire weasel through grappling, the opponent must achieve a pin against the creature.

Blood Drain (Ex)
A dire weasel drains blood for 1d4 points of Constitution damage each round it remains attached.

And that's the 3.5 version, it was a 3.0 game and I think the 3.0 version was even nastier.

Plus, he only had like... 8 of them. But 40? If you have blood, you're screwed

Some things are set to auto-exploit. 40+ animal companions, for instance.

Yep. It's the Russian Bear Cavalry you're looking for.

The Dire Beartron Cavalry would be a fractally godless killing machine, though, so I dunno if you actually want to use something like that...

the royal canadian bear force is the response to the russian bear cavalry.

it's a bunch of summoned dire bears that had cloudwalkers cast on them, being lead by dire bear wild shaped dwarf druid & his dire bear companion.

there was death lasers and joy that day. and a tornado. and a carpet bombing too if memory serves.
