I call them specialist casters.

semi-gishes. They try to combine full casting with martial competence, so they're trying to be gishes.

How are they trying to be gishes? they all have 1/2 BAB iirc.

Third Tier classes?

because they're supposed to be useful in a straight up fight. I don't know specific stats, but that's the attempt.

They can all cast in armour, and get proficiency in armour. They're worse off than a cleric because of BAB, but to me it seemed to be an attempt at creating gish classes.

I didn't say it worked.

To me that seems to be an attempt at making wizards who aren't as fragile at low levels.

I believe Specialist Casters is the preferred term.

Combine terms here. Specialist Spontaneous, for example. Third-Tier Casters. Whatever.

Full-list casters, maybe?

Master casters?
They each master certain schools.

I don't know about you but I certainly do not want my PCs playing a base class from a group called the master casters. That would probably become the only verbal component ever used. Ever.

...Bad?

I think Specialist Spontaneous Casters would be the best name for them.

Yes, shorthand for a spontaneous caster who knows every spell of a given level.

Come to think of it, isn't their slang term the advanced learning classes?

Ouch. You might as well call them the remedial math classes.

I've heard them named Specialized Sorcerers, which makes sense sort of.

Just wanted to point out that while War Mage and Dread Necro are sort of a waste of time (but make great NPC classes), the Beguiler is actually a pretty solid class.

And the Warmage is incredible at level 16+ - does the term Rainbow Warnsake not mean anything to you?

And the Warmage is incredible at level 16+ - does the term Rainbow Warnsake not mean anything to you?The issue with Warmage is that not only is it poor at Evocation(not getting things like Contingency etc that are good but not blasting), but it also sucks at blasting because it doesn't get things like Wings of Flurry. Rainbow Servant shenanigans dont qualify for class balance discussions.

Exalted Arcanist is also a nice boost for the Warmage.
