View Full Version : [3.5] Would Grove Markus from Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust be creatable in 3.5?

Once again there is a character concept that has been on my mind for a good while, and I am seeking help here. (Love you gals/guys )

For all those familiar with Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vampire_Hunter_D:_Bloodlust), the sequel to the original movie, Grove was the sickly brother who I do not believe ever left the cart/bed they traveled on. However, while he could not physically fight he took some kind of substance which let him in closest D&D terms either become a ghost, or astral project I believe.

Pictures showcasing him and his ability:

I doubt it's possible using D&D rules, but in case any of you know a way/build to build/pay homage to him as closely as possible to the original media please let me know. It would be much appreciated. Having such a substance would be nice, but I imagine not 100% needed (anyone know what it was called in the movie?).

Also, some more help needed, but spoilered for those who have not seen the movie:

Those who have seen the movie know his eventual fate. I would like this PC to mimic/pay homage to that as well. Hence perhaps there is a way for the projection process (or the substance if there is one in D&D?) to have a negative, and possibly cumulative, effect(s)?

May he rest in peace. :smallfrown:

I can't think of anything official that fits that off the top of my head, but there's a homebrew PrC (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=130014) that was posted a couple days ago that might work.

Psion Uncarnate might work, though it would be a bit of a stretch.

Alternatively, Astral Projection+Plane Shift.

Maybe a powerful spellcaster using Project Image, but you'd need to maintain line of effect for it to work.

I believe there was a "Half-Ghost" template back in Dragon (when it was a physical magazine) that let you project like that for a period of time.

Or alternately, have the astral body be the character, with Ghost or another incorporeal template, take Leadership, and have the physical body be your cohort. If you did go Psion Uncarnate (or just an Unbodied Psion), then the physical body could be your Psicrystal (polymorphed).

I just looked up the Psion Uncarnate. Yes, I can perhaps see that working. Although it would indeed be a stretch. However, a DM might be running a game soon using the Advanced d20 Magic system, so perhaps that could be made to work?

However, what is an Unbodied Psion?

ps. And perhaps that Half-Ghost template might work, if it actually lets him leave his body. I could maybe ask the DM if the template could represent his nearness to death and such.

pss. Would making his Con score be horrendously low be a good idea for this character/build?

It's a creature. (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/monsters/unbodied.htm)

It does, the body is left behind much a la Astral Projection.

Well, the Fetch (half-ghost) comes with STR/CON penalties.
Crystal Keep (http://www.crystalkeep.com/d20/rules/DnD3.5Index-Templates.pdf) has the template.
It also has the Suel Lich templates, which might work pretty well (with a little adaption) since it rapidly burns out it's host bodies.

Fiend of Possesion (from FF) could potentially pull it off too.
Maybe a pit fiend who posesses a sick man and occasionaly breaks lose to spam Blasphemy and Fireball on stuff he doesn't like?
Well, maybe not.
