I'm not putting this in homebrew initially because the question is simply is there a preexisting rune magic casting mechanic. Ideally I'm looking if there's a class based around it,homebrew accepted. The only thing I've seen that sorta matches the description is on our own homebrew forums, The skald (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=113613&highlight=skald), but the problem is it has too much bard flavor in it.

Well, there is a 3rd party book called Viking Age that has a rune magic system in it.

You can find it for sale here (http://www.amazon.com/Viking-Age-d20-Fantasy-Roleplaying/dp/1932091084). And it's sequel here (http://www.amazon.com/Ragnarok-Tales-Norse-Gods-Bennighof/dp/0970796110/ref=pd_sim_b_1/189-4012256-5221414).

There's the Runescarred Berserker in Unapproachable East that scribes Runescars on his body and activates those as spells. Geometer [Complete Arcane] also does something of the type with Spellglyphs. Mind you, both of them cast perfectly standard spells, just with slightly different mechanics.

The ones in the Viking Age books are actual runes that are cast based off of old Norse runes and such.

It's really a neat system.

It's worth it. I only have the first one, but I can say it does have some neat and fun things in it. A friend of mine ran a game with it.

In the Warcraft d20 (NOT World of Warcraft d20), there's a rune casting system. Check the Magic and Mayhem book, for the base class called the Runecaster. :smallwink:

And the FR books (I believe FRCS and FRPG) have a rune system.

Yeah, but it's not a very good one. FRCS has a better one that the Player's Guide, use it.

I believe Dragon Compendium has something about runes, but it might not be magic. Haven't seen it in ages.

The Dragon Compendium has TWO sections about runes, actually. One concerns runes as language (cool fluffy section). The other is about the glyph of warding spell, and alternate glyphs for the spell, along with a way to create glyphs without the spell (fun stuff, actually).

On a semi-related note, I'm like a freakin' Dragon Compendium god. I know that book backwards and forwards at this point. :smalleek:

Don't forget the Runesmith (RoS) and Runecaster (PGtF).

Yeah, the Runesmith was alluded to, but not directly said above. I don't know the Runesmith though... need to go check that one out. Thanks for the reference Thurbs. :smallwink:

So far they have been all good reads, unfortunately no dice on the viking age as of yet, but the only nitpick I have has there ever been a core class that revolves around rune magic? It wouldn't be hard to backwards construct some of the prestige classes but mostly out of curiosity has it been done yet?

Yes, the Runecaster in Magic and Mayhem is a base class.

There was the Geometer variant specialist Wizard back in 2E. Maybe we could stat up a Domain Wizard variant based on Runes?

You can always get the Viking Age book in ebook format at DrivethruRPG. (http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product_info.php?products_id=3406&it=1&filters=0_0_0_0_0&manufacturers_id=67) Otherwise, the Runecaster from the Warcraft RPG is only other one I can come up with.
