Vaarsuvius is a hermaphrodite.

You have no idea how many threads there are of this.

This question is answered in the FAQ (http://www.giantitp.com/FAQ.html#faq10) even.

V's whatever you want V to be.

And fanfiction writers cheered.

V is actually an awakened fruitcake. A simple elf-based illusion spell to disguise V's curranty goodness, the debate over gender becomes irrelevant as fruitcakes do not have sexual organs, except in the very worst bakeries.

You could very well take this idea a stage further and say that V's mate is actually V's creator and dispatched said fruitcake to spy on the Order of the Stick for reasons unknown.....

Don't worry, everyone makes this mistake...

This is actually a very common rookie mistake.

You see, there is no Vaarsuvius. A complex series of optical illusions encoded in the comics combined with hypnotic cues induced by your monitor's flicker rate and a simple javascript subroutine combine to create the impression of a sixth member of the party. In the print version the same effect is achieved through the use of mild hallucinogens in the ink.

The illusory nature of V is hinted at in the comic itself through the character of Blackwing. Although Vaarsuvius can see and interact with the raven, its existence is immediately forgotten when it is not present. When V embraces the existence of the character and interacts with it more frequently, he or she learns that now nobody else can recall the existence of the bird, instead dismissing it as an illusion.

This implies that not only is Blackwing imaginary, but that all the other characters' previous mentions of it have also been in V's head. It is The Giant's way of acknowledging the fact that some readers have become aware of V's non-existence, by having the character also go through such a change in perception.

The reason nobody can agree on the gender of the imaginary character is that, as a psychological construct, V's appearance exists only in your head. Certain patterns, however, emerge. It is commonly believed that the character wears a red robe, and has purple hair. The fact that readers can easily identify these traits (even agreeing on some tiny runes on the robe), but not the gender of the character, is frankly ludicrous. Unwilling to dismiss their delusions, these readers blame the gender ambiguity on the simplicity of the artwork, despite the fact that the sex of the other characters is immediately apparent even though they are rendered in this same style.

There have been failures of this process in the past. In particular a number of readers have a very firm idea of what the character's gender is. They view it as being immediately self evident, and do not understand why others disagree (questioning Belkar's alignment is an occasional side effect). The fact that the number of people certain that Vaarsuvius is male is about the same as the number certain V is female should send up a red flag, but rarely does. There are also a few readers who view V as a penguin juggling tomatoes on a unicycle, but they are a minority, and this odd outcome is attributed to them being dropped on their heads during childhood.

As the reader views more comics, the cracks in their perception tend to become more apparent, and eventually the delusion of the character's existence is dispelled. Others go mad from the subconscious realization that their reality is a lie, and begin posting in the Crack Pairings thread, which has become the Playground's equivalent to Arkham Asylum.

In a classic line...

There are no stupid questions on these boards. Well, except what gender Vaarsuvius is. Here's the relative truth in the matter.

Vaarsuvius does not have a set gender, really. Instead, Vaarsuvius is whatever YOU perceive her to be, according to Schrodinger. That is to say, you should consider all the things you want to, and decide what gender you think he is, and change it whenever it no longer suits you. However, you should not voice your opinion loudly to other people, as it is each individual person's right to choose her gender. His gender was, at one point, very hotly debated, so it's still a kind of fragile topic, I think.

So go with what you want. Will Rich every pick a definite gender for her/him? Why would he? He would only disappoint roughly half the fans.

(And yes, I switched back and forth between gender pronouns on purpose. It's funnier that way, I think)

We enjoy punishing V so much because, on a subconcious level, we know that V is an aspect of our own minds which we must drive back.

Also we're horrible, horrible people.

In OOTS verse, Elves do not have genders, instead they reproduce Via Budding. Any elves that are clearly male or female, claim to be either, or claim to be half elves, are just humans with fake ears.

To go back to V's ambiguous gender, I love it. I can ship him with Haley, Miko or Haerta and have half elves running around, or ship her with Aarindarius and have full elves running around.

Even Lirian (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0532.html)?

And Keeno (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0491.html)?

I have the impression that Elves are split into two sub-races, there's the gender ambigious High Elves like V (and V is stated to be a High Elf in OtOoPCs) as well as the more rustic nature elves like Lirian and Keeno.

Keep in mind that, as their skin tones suggest, V's children are adopted.

Also, people of opposite gender can sleep in the same room (or even in the same bed) without being lovers if they trust each other.

Or if they like casual sex. V never claimed to be faithful. :p

Mild? If they can do all that, I'd say they're pretty frickin' STRONG hallucinogens.

So that means, if I wanted it bad enough, V could be for Vaarsuvius? Hot damn! And on November 5th no less!

Somewhere, in his underground cave, Alan Moore is seething with rage. And he does not know why.

Also, I've said it before, and I'll say it again. V is two gnomes in an elf-costume.

I ought to start a counter of people who've said that to me, it'd up to 5 now. Edit: In fact, I have.

V is definitely a guy if you ask me. (Besides, wouldn't he be a Witch if he was a she?)

But it's a running joke in the comic that no one knows for sure.

Just like we don't know the Monster in the Dark is a Tarrasque.
