View Full Version : What would your luck be with a Deck of Many Things if it were real?

So I justed pulled out my Green Ronin Deck of Many Things, and pulled a single card. I got the Skull. >_>

So, what would you have gotten?

For those of you who do not have any playing cards or tarot cards, below is a random playing cards generator, and below that is the Deck of Many Things in the d20 SRD.

ps. Be sure to declare how many you will pull beforehand.

I once draw of the deck of many things 3 cards, I gained, Key, Knight and Moon.

I took the weapon with good graces, accepted my new ward, and then used the (two) wishes to revive the fallen Neutral cleric in the party who drew Void, and the last wish to get Myself, my ward, and my characters brother out of the world largest dungeon, as we realised the party was more evil than simply neutral.

Edit: Having just drawn one card from Random.org, it was Moon, my 1d4 rolled a 3. Woo

I drew two cards.

I drew the Sun (King of Diamonds) and Euryale (Queen of Spades). I received a Periapt of Proof Against Poison, and 50,000 XP from the first, and -1 to all saves from the second. Fortunately I just gained 7-9 levels, making me the highest level person on Earth and giving me at least +2 to all saves.

I just drew... Joker.

+10,000 XP.

Hell yeah!

I've used the DoMT once in-game. I got the Void. This time, drawing 5:
Skull: I'm attacked by a Dread Wraith. Does anyone know if shotguns can hit incorporeal creatures?
Throne: I'm now a smooth talker and own land in California. That'll help with the undead monstrosity trying to eat me.
Gem: 25 pieces of jewelry. That should cover the year's taxes on my keep.
Star: +2 Int. Not bad.
Donjon: Well, at least being locked away for eternity should keep the Wraith out of my hair.

Yeah, there's a reason I avoid this item. Every time, something like this happens.

Just to stop claims that it's all in my head, another 5:
Euryale: -1 to all saves. Getting off to a good start.
Comet: Nice, free level.
Void: Boop.

First card: Moon. 4 wishes. Hehe.
Second Card: Talons. I don't own any magic items, so meh.
Third card (getting dangerous!): Moon again. 3 more wishes.

So, 7 wishes. Oh man. My current "What to wish for from a djinn" list is at a minium of 10. Ah, difficult decisions.

1: Sun. Yay! random magic item: +2 Str ioun stone. Useful, I guess.
2: Skull...
3: Rogue... hooray for adding insult to injury.
4: Balance. Meh.

I should have just gone for one, I guess.

Ok... I declare that I'll draw 5 times.

1st: Jester (+10k exp & must draw twice more).
2nd: Ruin (lose all wealth and physical property). - I can live with this.
3rd: Flames (I gain the enmity of an outsider). - Ok...?
4th: Balance (my alignment switches... so I become lawful evil)
5th: Idiot (intelligence drain... I may draw again).
6th: Vizier (I know the answer to my next dilemma... lottery number)
7th: Comet (defeat the next monster I encounter to gain a level) - But I like my cat!:smallfrown:
8th & Final: Throne (I gain a +6 bonus on diplomacy checks and a keep)

Ok, so after the drawing the max number of times... I end up being a high level character of a lawful evil temprement, with tons of cash and a fortress. Oh, and I'm also really dumb.
Sounds like I become a BBEG.

I got the Sun! Medium Wondrous Item and 50000 XP. Then I checked few on the top, and got in order:
Talons (Queen of Pentacles)
The Void (Eight of Swords)
Flames (The Devil)

So I'm pretty ****ed. Though drawing The Void means I stop drawing cards, so the enmity between Outsider and me does not happen. That said, losing all magic items followed by losing soul sucks. Luckily I only drew that one card *hums*

By the way, our playgroup never has high-level games without the Deck. Many a quests have been gotten by having peoples' souls trapped around the multiverse, Outsiders' ire brought down upon us and so on. Of course, we only do it 'cause everyone is prepared to deal with the random imbalance it's going to cause.

Lessie, If I declare and draw three cards...

Knight, Sun, and Jester

So, that nets me a 4th Level Fighter, 60,000XP, and a Helm of Telepathy.

A bodyguard for when the going gets tough, enough experience to be an 11th level character and some serious money making potential.

Sounds swell.

Cespenar
2009-11-05, 07:26 AM
Jester, Gem, Flames.

So, I get much stronger, richer, in expense of earning the enmity of an outsider?

Sounds like a classic fantasy tale. Count me in.

Drawing 3 *click*

Hmm,
Star- right to intelligence, skill points:smallbiggrin:
The Fates-Avoid a situation...good to have in my back pocket
Comet- Lizards count right?

Overall I'm smarter, and I get "a get out of anything card."

Foryn Gilnith

....
Declare two.

Talons, lose my nonexistent magic items.
Idiot, lose 5 points of intelligence. Draw again.
Rogue, lose my best friend.

If I had chosen to draw 3 my next one would have been Throne, leaving me with a nice, cushy political career. Makes my stupidity irrelevant and my new enemy also irrelevant (politicians make many enemies, don't ya know)

Drawing four:

Sun Donjon (woot...) Draw No More Cards

OK, so what does that give me?

OK, I get a Maul of the Titans, 50 000xp, and then I get Imprisoned.

With absolutely nobody who can find me who can actually cast Freedom.

Take 2: Draw 3 again.. The Fates, Ruin and Skull.. I wil use The Fates to forget about the Skull thingie..

1 card.. 1 last time..

Ruin again.. I already got that result with ignoring the Skull with The Fates...
One more time!

Rogue.. I don't want to do this anymore..

Couldn't resist and got the Key..

So umm... is there anything to prevent you from stacking the deck? Because drawing the sun 25 times in a row followed by the fates 25 times in a row just seems like a good idea.

Also first event you ignore with fates is your not becoming all powerful.

OverdrivePrime
2009-11-05, 08:06 AM
Oh man.
Um... I've always been intrigued by these things. I'll draw 3.

1. Ace of Clubs... the Talons! All magic items I own disappear permanently! Noooooo! My iPod Touch! :smallfrown:

2. Jack of Hearts... the Knight! Hmm... a 4th level fighter. I shall name him.... Tim? Okay, super, I've got someone to train with, but other than that, he's just another mouth to feed.

3. King of Hearts... the Throne! Woah, sweet! This one I really like. +6 to diplomacy checks and a small keep? I'll take a half hour to research the best real estate choice out of the empty lots on the river downtown, head down with henchman Tim, and create my new abode.

Declare 4:
Void (Oh Well)
Donjon (Darn)
Idiot (?!?!!)
Skull (....!)

OK, that's got to be the worst draw I've ever seen. Let's try again.
Declare 4:
Star (+2 int, not bad)
Idiot (Roll 3, -4 int, so -2 total so far)
Donjon (Again?!)
Void (Argh!)

One last time!
Declare 4:
Donjon (Right, if I ever find a DoMT in game, I'm not touching it)
Fool (Yeah, well, I'm already only a level 1 expert.)
Idiot (This card is starting to seem as bad as Donjon!)
Void (I could have guessed that)

Either the random generator on that card drawing site is broken, or I'm the luckiest (for certain definitions of luck) person I know.

About what I expected. First I accidently drew from the deck without setting it up properly. Queen of Spades. Then I set it up properly, and chose to draw three. Queen of Spades, Queen of Clubs, Two of Clubs (extra draw), King of Spades.

Sooo... -1 to all saves, enmity with an outsider, -1d4+1 intelligence, and lose all wealth and property. Yeah, that's about typical of my luck.

The Glyphstone
2009-11-05, 08:21 AM
3 Draws.

1- Comet - defeat the next monster I encounter to gain a level.
2 - Key - gain a major magic weapon. Specifically, I gain...a +4 Brilliant Energy Heavy Crossbow. Nifty.
3 - Gem - 25 pieces of jewelry.

If I can count my grouchy professor as a monster, I end up Lvl2, rich, and sporting a bowcaster. Sweet.

Necron

I declared 3 cards...

Flames - Outsider emnity
Comet - Defeat next monster to gain a level
The Void - Body functions, but soul is trapped elsewhere

All in all I'd say ouch.

But I still love me some DoMT.

Now I have eternity to develop some type of telepathic ability capable of reaching across the planes to convince a party of adventurers to come rescue my soul.

Hrmm... things are looking quite grim for me.

Trying this again... 2 of Clubs (drawing extra), Queen of Clubs (again!), Ace of Diamonds (huh, I got something good), and Two of Spades.

So, -1d4+1 intelligence, -1 to all saves, know answer to next dilemma, and change alignment. Yep, my luck is still in town. Lets give this shot number three...

Ace of Spades, Queen of Clubs, Queen of Clubs. So, imprisonment and two enmities. Lets see if my bad luck can hold through a fourth run.

Queen of Diamonds, Queen of Hearts, Jack of Clubs. 4 wishes, major magic weapon, and have to use 1 wish to be rid of Dread Wraith. Woohoo! Success! I have three wishes left, and some sort of weapon. Fear my new mouse.

lesser_minion
2009-11-05, 08:32 AM
Gimme the maul, and I'll use one of my seven wishes :smallwink:

I lost it when I got imprisoned.

Plus, a Wish isn't quite enough. It tells you where you have to cast Freedom, but you'd still have to cast that spell.

Which would take another wish for a scroll.

I tried a second take, and ended up with:

Balance (OK... so I now get to draw again to pick an alignment) Sun (so I get to roll for another item) Moon (Can I get anything that doesn't make me roll more dice?) Euryale (Nooooo.....) Rogue (Aaaaaargh)

Conveniently, the Sun card gave me a Tome of Leadership and Influence, and I also gained 2 wishes.

Oh, and I rolled Lawful Evil as my shiny new alignment.

So I'm now a level 2 favoured soul of Asmodeus. Woot...

Weimann
2009-11-05, 08:33 AM
The odds are probably better if I draw few cards, but... I like a thrill! Drawing 5...

1) 2 of clubs; Idiot. I lost 2 points of Intelligence. Duuuur. I may also draw again; since I'm stupid, I'll do this:

1b) King of spades; Ruin. Immideately loose all wealth and real property. CRAP! I'm poor AND retarded!

2) Jack of diamonds; Star. Immideately gain +2 inherent bonus to one ability score. Well, I pick Intelligence, then. At least I'm back to normal.

3) Jack of spades; Rogue. One of my friends turn against me. I wonder who...

4) Queen of diamonds; Moon. I'm granted 1 wish. I wish that my friend was no longer turned on me!

5) Ace of diamonds; Vizier. I know the answer to my next dilemma. That might be useful.

All in all, more lost than gained.

Foryn Gilnith
2009-11-05, 08:42 AM
Oh, let's give it another few whirls. Drawing 5, 3, 4, 1, 4, and 3.

1) Ruin, Talons, Rogue, Star, Throne. So I lose everything, including a friend; but then I get more charisma, natural leadership, and a cozy little stronghold somewhere. Rabble-rousing ahoy!

2) Fool, Dungeon. Failure

3) Fool -> Jester, Moon (2), Comet, Throne. So I lose 10K XP, placing me at 0. Then I gain 10K XP, placing me at around fifth-level. Then I get two wishes and leadership skills. Score.

4) Throne. Diplomacy bonus, yay.

5) Key, Void. Failure.

6) Jester, Key, Comet. So I get 10K XP and a +5 greatsword. Could be useful, I guess, maybe. Might be able to dissect it for magical essence.

Temet Nosce
2009-11-05, 08:52 AM
Well, decided to give it another couple shots cause this is amusing. First one was... an interesting divergence.

King of Hearts, King of Hearts, King of Hearts. I gain +18 Diplo, and three keeps. Apparently I have a future in politics and for my next draw...

Queen of Spades, Queen of Spades, King of Spades. Yeah, now that's typical for me. -2 to all saves, and lose all wealth and property. This is semi addictive, doing it yet again.

Queen of Spades, Jack of Spades, Queen of Spades. Hm, just noticed that I haven't been playing with Jokers. Better turn those on and do it again.

King of Diamonds, Joker (without), Joker (with), King of Hearts. Weird, so I get a medium wondrous item, 50k EXP, nothing from the jokers and +6 Diplo and a new keep. Last time.

King of Diamonds, Queen of Diamonds, Joker (without, doing draws), King of Diamonds, King of Hearts. Ok, now finally a great roll. +100k EXP, two medium wondrous items, 4 wishes, +6 Diplo, and my own castle. So I'm now a level 14 Artificer (how else would I get access to all those spells?), will probably abuse the medium items to get PaO, and have a ton of minor items like ring of sustenance and periapt of health. I'm also probably the ruler of a nation, and I still have 4 wishes to use.

Gonna end it there. That was beautiful.

Getting Donjon, Idiot and Void 3 times with only one card change? someone is thinking about you :smallwink:

And I shall draw again, using real cards this time.. With the reptile deck my friend got for me
*drums* Queen of Hearts.. lemme see... the Key! A +4 Vicious Frost longsword! I will get to negatives as soon as I strike someone, but it will kill them for sure!

Draw 2: Comet! With my new sword, I shall win this one for sure! Level 2 for me! Wizard! or totemist.. never built that one before..

Draw 3... The fool.. Being level 2, it kills me or just puts me on the 0xp mark? the redraw gave me Euryale.. Good thing I got my sword huh?

3 cards now:
Balance, Jester, and Skull... I.. Should have stopped with the comet.. I need to break even!

3 more:
Ruin, Sun and Knight.. Sun gives me Iridescent Spindle Ioun Stone.. Sustains me without air...
I could go diving, treasure hunting.. The fighter would help..

Let's go for gold. Five.

1. Rogue: Oooh, the enmity of some influential NPC. Ah, well...

2. Throne: Luckily, I am now a king. With a castle. Hells yes.

3. Sun: 50,000 XP and a wondrous item. Unluckily, I'm probably only level 1, so by experience rules can only gain 1 level :( Hell with it, it's an artifact! Level 10! And I rolled a Headband of Intelligence +4!

4. Star: +2 inherent bonus... let's put it in Int so I am an intelligent ruler.

5. Balance: Radically different alignment?! Well, I think I'm CG, or at least CN, so it'll unfortunately likely be Lawful Evil. A level 10 Lawful Evil king.

So in summary, I am now the BBEG of a low-level campaign

Pulling 3, will edit in the results.

Black Joker (2 more draws)
Queen of Spades (-1 to all saving throws forever)
Queen of Clubs (Oh ****, enmity with an evil outsider :smallfrown:)
The extra Draws:
Two of Clubs (Permanent Int Drain, Gain a re-draw)
Kind of Spades (Lose all wealth and Property, completely broke :smallfrown:)
Other Re-Draw:
Two of Hearts (25 Pieces of Jewelry, or 50 gems.)

I say I'm fairly unlucky, since I lose the Two of Hearts to the King of Spades... I should have taken the 10k XP :smallfurious:

Ace of Clubs - Talons - All magic items you possess disappear permanently. - Don't have any anyways.
Two of Spades - Balance - Change alignment instantly. - OK, I'm not sure what my alignment is at the moment, but it's changed.
Two of Diamonds - Comet - Defeat the next monster you meet to gain one level. - That'd be my Team Leader at work. Works for me.
King of Diamonds - Sun - Gain beneficial medium wondrous item and 50,000 XP. - Save the best for last. 50K XP kind of rocks. A lot.

I'm drawing five.

Rogue (One friend turns against you)
Fates (Avoid one situation)
Moon (1d4 Wishes)
Fool (Lose 1d4+1 Int, may draw again)
Euryale (-1 penalty vs Saving Throws)

And one more from Fool ...

Moon (1d4 Wishes)

Sweet! Up to 8 wishes and I can avoid the friend turning against me and use two of my wishes to undo my penalties!

I'm very unlucky, so I shouldn't touch these things. So...

Declare 4:
Jack of Spades - Rogue - Friend turns against me
King of Spades - Ruin - I'm now in Poverty
Ace of Clubs - Talons - Jokes on you, all my wealth is already gone.
Two of Hearts - Gem - 25 pieces of Jewelry or 50 gems.

If I were to draw just 1 more:
King of Diamonds - Sun: Levels and a magic item

Drew three.
1 - Vizier. Yay, I can fix my next problem!
2 - Gem. Yay riches!
3 - The Fool. D'OH!
4 - The Moon. Woohoo! Rolled d4, for a traditional 3 wishes. Wish 1: Undo misfortune. (I want my 10,000 exp back!) Wish 2: Cure Afflictions. (I want normal hearing!) Wish 3: Create a nonmagical item worth 25,000gp.

So, I gained:
- The answer to my next dilemma
- 50 gems
- Healed my hearing
- 25,000gp (500 lb = 8000 ounces of gold; approximately $8,720,000 worth)

I think I made out pretty well.

I draw three.

I drew the Fates, the Flame and the Key.

So obviously, since I know I will be fighting a lot in my future, most likely with a devil or loth, I took my +4 Truebane Energy Aura Katana of Colors, and sat and waited for the creature. And when it comes after me... I strike. And when it reaches for my heart, I use my power of Fate to prevent it from finding me in the first place. :smalltongue:

I drew 3 cards: Queen of Spades, Black Joker, and Jack of Spades.
So results:
-1 saves.
Friends turn against me.
But I gain 10, 000 Xp or draw again 2 times.

I'm going for the draws (2). Queen of Diamonds and Red Joker
So I gain 1d4 (2) wishes. And lose 10K XP and must draw again.

My Alignent shifted: whee.

Well, I can wish for some sweet stuff even if I do have these terrible events.

Drawing five cards.

Got Jack of Diamonds, Black Joker, King of Diamonds, Queen of Diamonds and Jack of Hearts...

...which turns out to be about the best draw ever. The Star, the Jester, the Sun, the Moon and the Knight. In total, 60,000 XP, 1d4 wishes, +2 inherent bonus to an ability score, a beneficial medium wondrous item and the service of a 4th-level fighter.

I would probably retire any character who actually rolled this, as they have clearly used up all their luck.

Joker, drew two more: gain major magic weapon and gain the service of a 4th level fighter.

2. gain service of 4th lev. fighter.

3. I need to defeat a dread wraith or be destroyed

4. four wishes

5. I permanently lose all magic items :smalltongue:

I drew 5 cards and got the knight - Service of a level 4 fighter, Flames - Enmity between you and an outsider, comet - defeat the next monster you meet to gain a level, talons - all magic items you possess disappear permanently, fool - lose 10000 xp and draw again.

6th draw - balance - change alignment instantly

You know: People who drew Sun should help out people who drew the Dread Wraith. 4 ECL 10s + 1 ECL 1 against 5 CR 11s. Whoever accidentally drew it would probably go up 5 levels at least plus you level up twice from just 7 wraiths. So you keep getting idiots potential allies to pull cards from the deck. Some people get lucky and nick the Sun. Some people get unlucky and Sun-people fight the resultant Dread Wraiths for XP. Win-win. :smallcool:

I probably wouldn't draw (due to the many cards that just mess up your life forever, if not end it instantly), but if I forced, I'd get...

Ace of Clubs -- All magic items you possess disappear permanently.

If I were desperate, I'd probably draw five cards:
Ace of Diamonds -- Know the answer to your next dilemma.
Two of Diamonds -- Defeat the next monster you meet to gain one level.
Two of Spades -- Change alignment instantly. (hrm)
Jack of Diamonds -- Immediately gain a +2 inherent bonus to one ability score.
Queen of Diamonds -- You are granted 1d4 wishes.

Um. Wow.

4 Cards:

1. Vizier (Ace of diamonds) Know the answer to your next dilemma. - useful depending on if one can count an entire test as a single problem.

2. Jester (Joker w/o trademark) - 10000 XP or 2 more draws. (I'll take the XP)

3. Balance (Two of Spades) - I seem to get Lawful good on alignment test so now I'm chaotic evil Drop; database

4. Idiot (Two of clubs) - Lose a 1d4 points of intelligence, ouch Oh and I'll draw another card because I can

5. Talons (Ace of clubs) - I lack magic items so I'm safe.

I was under the impression that anyone who attempted to assist in the skull battle just summoned themself a spectre of their own.

Teamwork might be useful, I guess, but I suspect that the spectres would keep appearing without being worth any experience until they were all dead.

Of course, a scythe that always hits and does 2d8 damage per hit could be quite useful to some people. I remember noticing in 3.0 that actually the skull added up to a good thing, because it was very difficult to lose (unless, of course, you happen to be a monk) and actually netted you a fairly handy magic item (or, at least, a very good starting point for a very handy magic item).

Of course, I didn't actually say that, because I'm still trying to scream somewhere deep within the Earth's crust.

1. lose all magic items(lol)
2. Gain your choice of twenty-five pieces of jewelry or fifty gems.
3. Lose Intelligence (permanent drain). You may draw again.
4. Gain beneficial medium wondrous item and 50,000 XP.

losing one intelligance, and gaining an item(lost all items first, so i think i keep the one from 4, maybe not)+50k XP, and 50 gems

edit: lose 1d4+1 int(doh)

Drew five... I was feeling frisky...

The Fool: Well, as a level 1 Expert, my loss of 1000 XP keeps me at level 1. So no real change there.
Talons: All my magic items are gone. Damn, I'll miss the things I didn't have. :)
Vizier: This should come in handy... now what dilema to use it on?
Flames: Damn, an outsider wants my head on a platter. And here I am with no magic items or levels! Guess I know what the Vizier is giving me the answer to!
Moon: And I rolled a 4. This is going pretty well. Absolute domination of the earth is now within my grasp. Or at least nigh unlimited wealth and a life of luxury... :) Hmmm, almost makes me want to try again!

So, lets see...
Draw three times:
1: King of Diamonds/ The Sun
Oh hell yes! Level 10 character and I get a... Robe of scintillating colours? What the hell am I supposed to do with that? Oh well, being a level 10 something sounds like a deal to me!
2: Queen of Clubs/Flames
Well, that's not good. Though if I win I can probably make some money with its corpse.
3: Queen of Hearts/ The Key.
Excellent. This should help with the fiend coming after me. I get a... +4 Holy Throwing Keen Flaming Burst Dwarven Waraxe o.0 I think I'll be taking those 10 levels in Warbade, thank you ;p

Well, I think I came out okay. Hell, with the stuff I got out of that I should be able to take down the outsider easy, and I've basically become the meanest person on the planet as far as fighting goes. Not bad.

EDIT: Blah, I was rolling on the medium weapon table instead of the greater (I know, I still ended up with an ungodly weapon). So, still using my old rolls, I have...
A +5 Brilliant Energy Holy Anarchic Speed Dwarven Waraxe. That's a +16 weapon :smalleek:

What a great time waster!! And addictive too. Let see, another 5 cards.

1) Ruin - I lose all wealth and property
2) Donjon - Immediately imprisoned.
3) Donjon again! - Well, two sentences can be served consequatively I suppose.
4) Star - +2 to a stat? Well none are serving me here in prison, so I'll take +2 to my Intelligence, maybe I can find a way out of this prison!
5) Moon - And my roll of a 1... I wish I was no longer imprisoned.

Viola! Came out destitute, but smarter for the experience. Not too shabby.

OK, one more time. Five draws again, because I'm a masochist.

1) Throne: +6 Diplomacy and a keep. Check!
2) Donjon: Prison once more. Well, my keep is rented out for the income for my family, and that +6 Diplomacy should keep the guards on my side here in prison. Maybe I can get an extra desert, and make friends with all the gang leader!
3) Key: Hmm, and my major magic weapon is... a +4 dagger. Looks like I have the best shiv in the joint! Who's running this prison now?!?!
4) Star: +2 to an attribute. Think I'll hit up the Charisma and really take over this prison!
5) Knight: And now the biggest, baddest basturd in the joint is my best friend.

To recap, I am wealthy and charming, locked in a prison which I can basically ahve the run of, with a big dude to protect me and a magic knife to let him use on my enemies. Of course, with my diplomacy and charisma, I don't have any enemies, so we'll use that dagger to dig our way out of prison! :)

Let's see...

5 cards, fur thy lulz!

1st. The Idiot --> Intelligence drain and draw again
2nd. The Jester --> 10k exp or 2 draws... Let's get the exp, for this one.
3rd. The Ruin --> Don't have real wealth or property, so...
4th. The Skull --> OK, now a Dread Wraith chases me :smallannoyed:
5th. The Rogue --> And now, one of my friends turns against me. I can live with that again, I guess...

Extra, from the Idiot. The Moon --> At least now I have... 2 wishes.

I wish that all of this never happened, so I can still live my life.
I wish that I can make another 5 card drawing :smalltongue:

So...

1st. Jester --> I'll take the 2 extra drawings, cause I'm a masochist xD
2nd. Flames --> An outsider doesn't like me :smallfrown:
3rd. Vizier --> I know the answer to my next dillema... Let's think of a dillema ¿?
4th. Euryale --> -1 to every saving throw -_-
5th. Skull --> Another Dread Wraith... I know my dillema, how in the world am I going to defeat that Wraith?

Jester Bonus #1. Fool. I lose 10k exp and must draw again
Jester Bonus #2. Star. I get a +2 to... Let's say Charisma, shall we?
Fool #1. Gem. 25 pieces of jewerly or 50 gems... Let's get the jewerly :smalltongue:

Trying again, for 5.

1. Moon - You are granted 1 wishes.
2. Comet - Defeat the next monster you meet to gain one level.
3. Knight - Gain the service of a 4th-level fighter.
4. Rogue - One of your friends turns against you.
5. Sun - Gain beneficial medium wondrous item and 50,000 XP. Manual of quickness in action +1

At the end, I'm a very highly powerful man with one less friend, a tough bodyguard, and a wish. Life is good.

Ugh, I pulled three:
Ten of Swords (-1 on all saves from now on)
Four of Swords (Imprisoned)
Ace of Diamonds (know the answer to the next dilemma)

Hmm, maybe "get out of imprisonment" is my dilemma. So I'll end up with some crappy saves, after figuring my way out of a dilemma I got myself into. Not the most positive experience ever.

So, I draw, brawl with a feral cat to gain a level. Immediately lose 10,000xp (costing me that level and probably more depending on what level I am) and am forced to redraw, creating a Dread Wraith that wants to murder me. This. This is what my luck would be with a Deck of Many Things.

Using the generator in the link...

I declare my intent to draw 13 cards (I consider 13 to be my number - it follows me everywhere, so I have accepted it).

1-Moon-I gain 3 wishes. I wish the following: "I wish to revert to my current alignment if/when it becomes altered by any subsequent drawing." "I wish for a supernatural being willing and capable of freeing me from the effects of the Void card or the Donjon card (whichever happens to be applicable) to be immediately informed of my status and location and my request for aid if/when I draw either of those cards." Reserving the third wish.
2-Balance-I change to NE and then, via my first wish, back to NG.
3-Gem-I gain 25 pieces of jewelry.
4-Talons-I lose all magic items; however, I don't own any, so that's okay.
5-Throne-+6 on Diplomacy and people see me as a leader (sweet!) and I gain a small keep...which I decide to place near my hometown in the mountains of Virginia.
-at this point, I ponder whether I should have gone with 5, which I considered first-
6-Ruin-Yeah, I should have. I lose the keep, all my videogames, my couple thousand dollars in the bank, all my stuff in my room, my laptop, my jewelry...this sucks.
7-Ruin- Well, that's redundant.
8-Knight- In a world where people max at 5th level, a 4th level bodyguard is pretty cool.
9-Void- Well, that sucks. At least a helpful supernatural being knows about it.

I think I'll use my last wish now, since I don't think I need my body for it - I'm not casting the wish, just using it. Lessee... *checks Wish limitations* ... I think I'll go with "I wish to have created adjacent to my body a bunch of gold equal to 25,000 gp." Once I'm rescued, this will amount to - I have a +6 Diplomacy, am seen as a leader, and I have a 4th level bodyguard, as well as having lost all of my worldly possessions and replaced them with the money from selling my gold (minus the keep, of course). And I'd have money left over! Of course, this is once I get rescued by the helpful supernatural being. Until then, life sucks.

I can't believe that I managed to make that positive, though it does rely on the existence of a helpful supernatural being.

I drew one card, an Idiot. Deciding to draw again, as is allowed (missing my intelligence score, jerks) I gain a jester. I can either quit there (and become a level five DnD character) or I can carry on and draw two more cards. Deciding I rather like being a level five character (and dearly missing my intelligence score), I stop there.

I had to try again... Done with Relapse's Cupboard.

This time I draw four:
1: Jester. What the hey, draw two more!
2: Euryale. :smallsigh:
3: Skull. Great.
4: Key. Sun Blade. If I had class levels, that would be nice.
5: Key. Luck Blade (3 Wishes). WIN!
6: Balance. Sigh, Neutral Evil (I think).

Well, there we go. I use one of my wishes to destroy the Wraith, the Luck Blade cancels out Eurale and I use the second wish to get something worth 25000 gp, or a couple of million dollars. And I still have two really useful swords. So, I basically turn into a low-level BBEG. Oh well.

Another go!
Four cards again.
1: Fates. Nice.
2: Vizier. What number should I pick to win the $30 million lottery?
3: Vizier. Heh, I'll keep this one in reserve.
4: Talon. What magic items?

Overall, that's a really subtle but excellent draw. I get huge benefit and little or no drawbacks, depending on interpretations of Talon.

Last try, 5 cards.
1: Sun. Get a Belt of Giant Strength +4. That's... really useful. Also, 10th level character.
2: Sun :smalleek: Goggles of night. Well, the item sucks but the extra 4 levels are nothing to scoff at.
3: Balance. Neutral Evil again.
4: Sun o.0. I'm now a 17th level character. Also, manual of quickness in action +1. Nice!
5: The Fates. Always useful. I think I'll avoid losing the lottery :smallwink:

So yeah, I'm now an evil 17th level wizard. I take over the world with my newfound money and power? And nightvision goggles...

I can come to only one conclusion. The Deck of Many Things wants to improve my life. And probably make me evil.

Ok I had to give this a try.

Drew 5 cards:
Queen of Clubs: The Devil: Great an outsider hates me.
Queen of Hearts: The Hierophant: Ok, the weapon might help a bit.
Jack of Hearts: Page of Swords: Gain service of 4th level fighter maybe he can distract the outsider for a while.
Jack of Diamonds: The Star: +2 Int thank you.
Two of Clubs: Idiot: Ouch so -2 Int total now. Draw again.
Two of Clubs: Oh come on... now -6 Int.
King of Clubs: The Void: What a way to top it off. Well at least I don't have to live the rest of my life as an idiot. Nobody come save me!

I had to use a dice roller, since I have no cards.

13 Moon- You are granted 1d4 wishes. Edit: I got 3 wishes

22 The Void- Body functions, but soul is trapped elsewhere.

Well I can wish for someone to get me out..... I think.

Edit: I announced 3 cards,

Another_Poet

I should specify before announcing my results that, before drawing, I thought about if I would draw from a real Deck of Many Things at all. In real life, if I had such a deck, I think I would hold onto it (for years if necessary) until I was in some kind of crisis or serious low point in my life.

I figure, if I am homeless/dying/disabled/suicidally depressed/etc., drawing a bad card can't do much to make things worse (ha) but drawing a good one would make all the difference in the world.

So, with that said, I chose to draw just one card. I got the Jack of Hearts, or the Knight.

Gain the service of a 4th-level fighter
The fighter appears out of nowhere and serves loyally until death. He or she is of the same race (or kind) and gender as the character.

Not bad, I can work with that.
A male human caucasian Fighter 4. I wonder if he comes proficient with any decent real-world weapons like guns or grenade launchers? Does he have appropriate gear for a 4th level character? The real-world value of a working magical +1 weapon or healing potion would probably greatly exceed the D&D value of the same. I think we're rich for life!

Can my fighter level? I'd have to work on a way of gaining XP for him without going on a murderous rampage or sending him to Iraq. I don't want to lose him in a war. Maybe I can set him up as a bouncer at the club that I open with the sale of his Qaal's Feather Token. Every time he busts heads he'll gain XP, right? Though most drunken clubgoers aren't worth much XP I bet, but if I can just get him to 6th level he gets a new feat. And I will be the one choosing it. Yep yep.

I wonder what his stats are. Is Cha his dump stat? Or Int? I hope it's Charisma, otherwise I have to keep him away from my girlfriend. I imagine a 4th level fighter has a pretty well-built body. Of course, he does serve me loyally, but love conquers all.

Can he be a Pathfinder fighter? They are way cooler. If he's 3.5 I'll probably have to learn not to say how much better Pathfinder is (out loud at least). I wouldn't want to hurt his feelings.

Can he do any tricks? At 4th level he could conceivably have 7 ranks in Tumble. So maybe +9 or +10. What does a 30 on a Tumble perform check look like? Is this a better source of revenue than selling off his healing potions? It's less money up front but it would be nice if I had some working healing potions in the medicine cabinet. Or, more likely, locked up tight in a safe deposit box.

I think that just coming up with all the fun things to do with him would pull me out of my suicidal depression. And obviously there's a source of income here in case I'm homeless. And if he has a potion of Restoration (please please please!) I am good for just about any debilitating injury or illness.

All in all, Deck of Many Things turned my life around. I wouldn't be where I am today without Deck of Many Things. Thank you Deck of Many Things!

Something in the lines of dying horribly or fates worse than death.

If something good actualy happend, the universe would see it's mistake weeks later and made all the good things retroactively bad and horrenduous and etc.

The cards:

King of Clubs/The void: Get soul trapped elsewere. (:smallsigh:)
Two of Clubs/The Idiot: Lose inteligence (3), may draw again. (:smallsigh:)
Queen of Diamonds/Moon: Get wishes (3) (how? I'm F!#$&ing trapped elsewere!)
Two of Diamonds/Comet: Defeat next monster to get to next level. (how? I'm still F!#$&ing trapped elsewere!)

Assuming my trapped soul doesn't let me draw the rest of the cards...

Fate worse than death. Good thing I'm not in a book or something, because I have "cannon fodder/disposable material" written all over me :smallannoyed:

I drew one card, an Idiot. Deciding to draw again, as is allowed (missing my intelligence score, jerks) I gain a jester. I can either quit there (and become a level five DnD character) or I can carry on and draw two more cards. Deciding I rather like being a level five character (and dearly missing my intelligence score), I stop there.

At least you can put a point back into INT at 4th level.

I randomised and got a 16 (1-22), on the list here on the d20srd, the 16th card is Skull (Death).

*rolls initiative*

I wouldn't have very much to lose at this point, drawing again gets me #18, Sun. Hopefully I'd have drawn two cards.

50k experience is enough to make me suddenly level 10, and I get a magic item. What is my best bet against a Dread Wight?

Level 1 Human Expert becoming a Level 1 Expert/ ??? 9
Strength- 11
Dexterity- 13
Constitution- 12
Intelligence- 14
Wisdom- 13
Charisma- 15

+2 Ability points.

I also get one medium wonderous item, I'll randomly generate one, but feel free to suggest a best-case scenario item. My (random) medium wonderous item is a Pearl of Power (5th-level spell).

Cleric, Druid, and Wizard 9 gives me 5th-level spells.

Here are a few more cards:

3: Jester, 10k exp, brings me up to level 11.
4: Tower, I lose my Pearl of Power and am naked.
5: Key, I gain a major magic weapon.
6: Gem, I get some bling, maybe some material components?
7: Jester again, 10k exp.
8: Five of Swords, one of my friends turns on me. I should be able to fix that as a level 10 (almost 11) wizard.
9: Flames, enmity between myself and an outsider... DAMNIT! I thought I was done with high level enemies.

Chances are, I'd only draw three cards. I wouldn't draw more than five.

No cards, so I'll use Relapse's generator.

I agree with Freshmeat and Another_Poet. I wouldn't draw one. Destroyed or imprisoned are NOT my idea of a good thing, and the benefits aren't worth the drawbacks, imo. But I'll draw one.

Sun - Gain beneficial medium wondrous item and 50,000 XP. HA! YES. Tome of Clear Thought +1. Not bad.

Now, I decided to try something _crazy_. 25 cards. I'm going to draw them with the generator, and apply them in the order they were received, immediately. Except for maybe something like Moon that allows a minute to use the wishes. (I'll draw quickly to be able to use them on the next cards.)

Cards:
Fool, Balance, Ruin, Star, Star, Star, Flames, The Fates, Star, Knight, The Fates, Skull, Skull, Star, Euryale, Donjon, Key, Ruin, Balance, Skull, Comet, Talons, Key, Sun, Key, Skull.

Results:
Good: +8 Int and +2 Cha. (Wizard here I come, but ... Really? FIVE Stars? What?) 4th level fighter, 2x Major Magic Weapons, One Medium Wondrous Item. 50,000 xp. Gain a level off next monster.
Cloak of Displacement, Minor. +5 Dwarven Waraxe. +4 Longsword.

Bad: Must face Death three times. (CR 26, according to Google.) -1 to saves.

Canceled: Balance x 2. Lost one item to Ruin. Avoided Death once and Void once.

Yeah, Level ten with a couple of good items probably still leaves me dead.

Relapse, two cards. . .

The Star and the Rogue. That bonus is going into Charisma, since there is no D&D stat for 'improve rotten eyesight' which is where I'd prefer it. As for the Rogue, I won't try to win whoever it is back, and will try not to resent my once-friend too much; after all, the card probably warped matters so that I caused the breach.

Drawing 5, just because.

1. Vizier - Know the answer to your next dilemma.
2. Sun - Gain beneficial medium wondrous item and 50,000 XP. Medallion of thoughts
3. Flames - Enmity between you and an outsider.
4. Jester - Gain 10,000 experience points, or two more draws from the deck.
#
# The Fates - Avoid any situation you chose... once.

All in all, a pretty good draw. Use the fates to avoid my enmity, Vizier while buying lottery tickets, and read minds.

The Tower, now I'm broke and homeless and naked

The Star, guess I'll pick Int to better my mind

The Hermit, how do I obtain riches with no drawbacks that I can achieve within 10 years?

Retried it:

The Key, gaining a badass weapon

The Comet, hey squirrels/ants are monsters

The Talons, lost my badass weapon

I drew: Moon, the fates, and a Jester. I drew two more cards, and got the sun and Euralye.

Ace of Clubs, joker w/o trademark, ace of diamonds, king of diamonds.

Queen of pentacles: I have no magic items.
XII. The Hanged Man: I'll take the 10,000 xp and the multiple levels.
IX. The Hermit: My next dilemma is a general solution to the NP complete problem.
XIX. The Sun: I'll take the 50,000 xp, and for a medium wondrous item I randomly roll 84: Cloak of resistance +5

Viola! Came out destitute, but smarter for the experience. Not too shabby.

Last time I checked, you don't get to draw anymore after getting the Donjon:

All gear and spells are stripped from the victim in any case. Draw no more cards.

So you get ruin and imprisoned, or throne and imprisoned. No exit for you.

I know the answer to my next dillema, lose all magic items I possess, lose 10,000 EXP, take an intelligence drain and one friend turns on me. I choose the dillema of how to reverse all that.:smallcool:

The answer is DRAW AGAIN.

3?

1. Euryale - -1 penalty to all saving throws henceforth.
2. Talons - All magic items you possess disappear permanently.
3. Euryale - -1 penalty to all saving throws henceforth.

Well well... no! 4 again!

1. Comet - Defeat the next monster you meet to gain one level.
2. Rogue - One of your friends turns against you.
3. Donjon - You are imprisoned Draw ENDS.
4. Fool - Lose 10,000 experience points and you must draw again.
5. Vizier - Know the answer to your next dilemma.

Ahh.. What a lame friend, I just wanted to defeat him so I could level up, and he turned against me and sent he to jail? to others don't count..

Ok, I feel the need to give this a shot. All hail the RNG gods.
Drawing 4

1. Flames - Enmity between you and an outsider.
2. Talons - All magic items you possess disappear permanently.
3. Star - Immediately gain a +2 inherent bonus to one ability.
4. Euryale - -1 penalty to all saving throws henceforth.

Well...crap... I don't think the +2 makes up for the frustration that an outsider will cause me. But I guess we make do. So either wisdom or charisma, depending on how charisma is defined for males:smallamused:.

But again because I enjoy torture.
4 more

Sun - Gain beneficial medium wondrous item and 50,000 XP. Cloak of Charisma (+4)
The Fates - Avoid any situation you chose... once.
Fool - Lose 10,000 experience points and you must draw again.
Jester - Gain 10,000 experience points, or two more draws from the deck. (going with the draws)
Euryale - -1 penalty to all saving throws henceforth.
The Fates - Avoid any situation you chose... once.
Vizier - Know the answer to your next dilemma.

Ok, better but do the two Fates stack. All in all a good draw.

Go big or go home: Draw 5.

1-Jester.... Boop it. two more draws.
2-Comet- Now I have a (second) reason to put the axe to my roomy's cat.
3-Vizier- and someone mentioned the lottery. I'll go with that.
4-Throne- Greaaat. Something else for my family to mooch off me.
5-Star. A bump to Int, or Str.
6-Flames- Meh. Bring it.
7-Moon- rolled a 1. Not gonna complain.

The brave are rewarded by fate I guess. Just so we know, this will never happen in game. I'd probably draw the joker for +2, then the wraith and stat droppers 3 times each.

Ruin - lose all real property. Well, I'm a student, so no real big loss there...

Euryale - -1 to saving throws

Har har, 2 cards:

1. [JC] Dread Wraith.
2. [2D] Defeat the next monster to gain a level.

A heavy sense of irony hangs in the air following the draw's results.

Testing with 5 cards:

1. [JC] Dread Wraith again. :smallfrown:
2. [KD] Beneficial medium wondrous item and 50,000 XP!
3. [2C] Lose INT, may draw again.
EX Draw. [Red Joker] Gain 10,000 XP or two more draws from the deck. (more draws!)
EX Draw. [JD] +2 to an ability score, which goes right back to INT.
EX Draw. [KC] Body functions, but soul is trapped elsewhere. (okay...)
4. [QS] Magic items disappear (alas, poor Yoric, I barely knew him)
5. [AS] Imprisonment. (saving me from the wraith, hurray!).

Testing with 7:

1. [2S] Change alignment instantly.
2. [Black Joker] Lose 10 000 XP. Draw again. (the level drain probably kills me here but...)
EX Draw. [KH] +6 bonus to Diplomacy and a small keep. (not bad so far)
3. [JC] Dread Wraith. Again. :smallfurious:
4. [QC] Enmity between you and an outsider.
5. [AC] All magic items you possess disappear permanently. (crap)
6. [QD] You are granted 1d4 wishes. (Oh Santa, for Christmas I'd like... the Dread Wraith destroyed... any more is just icing on the cake...)
7. [JD] Immediately gain a +2 inherent bonus to one ability score. (wisdom to help me word the wishes)

And all 3 scenarios end up with me dead, or a Dread Wraith myself, rising 1d4 rounds after my death. That Dread Wraith...

I rolled 13, 16, 7 which comes out to Moon (1d4 Wishes, rolled 4), Skull (Ack Dread Wraith!), Fool (Lose 10,000xp but I have 0xp to lose + draw again), 4th mandatory draw is 19 Talons (Lose all Magic items but I have none).

So I gained 4 Wishes but now also need to fight a Dread Wraith as a level 1 expert. That's not so bad though. I can trap it in a Forcecage with one Wish, then wish a Mage's Sword inside the cage to kill it. Now I have two Wishes to spend on whatever I want. Sweet! Guess I'm not screwed by the Deck of many Things after all.

This is inspired by Zovc's thread where he imagined himself in real life drawing from a Deck of Many things (now he's figuring out how to fight a wraith). Let's do the same. Everyone draw 3 cards at random (you can simulate a draw with 1d22 via an online dice generator) and let's see what happens to us.

What do you guys get?

Or, to save on wishes, you could just wish that you didn't have to fight a dread wraith, or didn't draw the skull card. That leaves you three wishes instead of two.

Were it a random dread wraith, that might work. But undoing the effect of an Artifact is beyond a humble 9th level spell.

Knight: Service of a 4th level fighter. Okay... I guess he'll be rather bored, what with watching me not do anything...
Sun: Frak! I'm 11th level now? 36 on the Medium Wondrous Items Table, which is... a medallion of thoughts. Suddenly, the reason I need a bodyguard becomes apparent.

Euryale, Sun, Joker, Vizier. I think I'll take the 10000 xp. So, I'm now 11'th level, with a Lyre of Building. Niiice.

I tried drawing 15 cards, with the following results:
Moon, Star, Sun, Talons, Skull, Euryale, Gem, Skull, Comet, Gem, Comet, Sun, Fates, Euryale, Sun.

1 Wish, Robe of Blending (Lost due to Talons), Pink and Green Ioun Stone (+2 cha, woohoo), Manual of Gainful Exercise +1.

So I get... 200000 xp, and defeat 2 dread wraiths for 2 levels. I have a get out of x free, and -2 to all saves. Also a permanenent +2 to a stat, and 100000 gold.

Niiice. So I'm level... 20, halfway to 21, and two levels for defeating 2 dread wraiths? With 100000 gold? This is going to be fun.

60,000 XP? Seriously? I'm in all likelihood a first level commoner right now, that's enough XP to bump me up to eleventh level! I've become like unto some kind of glorious heroic myth walking the earth.

2. Knight - Gain the service of a 4th-level fighter. (Wow, so useful :smalltongue:)
3. Balance - Change alignment instantly. (Oh Dang! What's opposite of True Neutral?)
4. The Fates - Avoid any situation you chose... once. (Very Useful)
5. Gem - Gain your choice of 25 pieces of jewlery, or 50 gems. (woots!)
6. Star - Immediately gain a +2 inherent bonus to one ability. (Int baby!)
7. Knight - Gain the service of a 4th-level fighter. (Now I have two slaves!)
8. The Fates - Avoid any situation you chose... once. (Good, Now I got two.)
9. Fool - Lose 10,000 experience points and you must draw again. (I drop this on my slaves :smalltongue:)
10. Knight - Gain the service of a 4th-level fighter. (Another one?!?!)
11. Talons - All magic items you possess disappear permanently. (Well, it's a good thing I don't have any)
12. Sun - Gain beneficial medium wondrous item and 50,000 XP. (Yes! First roll was a +4 Belt of Giant Str, but that is useless to me, I'm a smart person. 2nd is a Major Circlet of Blasting, Again useless. 3rd is a Druid's vestament, useless to an Expert. Maul of the Titans, useless. I lack the Str to wield it. Mattock of the Titans, I'm not huge, cant use it. Aha! Something useful! A portable hole!)

Not too bad. I didn't end up dead :smalltongue:

Drew three cards got
The Fates Card, Avoid any situation once, That's always handy to have.
The Thone Card, +6 to diplomacy and a castle if I could think of a place to put it.
The Moon Card, 3 wishes. So I got three wishes, maybe a stat bonus and the other for what ever.

Drawing three cards.
1. Donjon, Lovely imprisoned already.
2. Fool, stay at 0 XP, draw again
free draw: Vizier, hmm would this answer my dilemma of being imprisoned?
3. Knight, Yay! a 4th level fighter, so useful while I'm imprisoned!

Draw 3 this time:
Talons - All magic items you possess disappear permanently.
Flames - Enmity between you and an outsider.
Skull - Defeat Death or be forever destroyed.

I'm screwed.

Draw 4:
- Idiot
Drawing another
Gem - Gain your choice of 25 pieces of jewlery, or 50 gems.
Flames - Enmity between you and an outsider.
Knight - Gain the service of a 4th-level fighter.
Sun - Gain beneficial medium wondrous item and 50,000 XP. Portable hole

I get a bit dumber and an outsider hates me, but now I'm level 10, have a Portable Hole, a permanent bodyguard. Better than the last set.

And 5:
- Idiot
Drawing another
Knight - Gain the service of a 4th-level fighter.
Moon - You are granted 1 wishes.
Skull - Defeat Death or be forever destroyed.
Star - Immediately gain a +2 inherent bonus to one ability.
Sun - Gain beneficial medium wondrous item and 50,000 XP. Manual of quickness in action +1
Skull - Defeat Death or be forever destroyed.
Star - Immediately gain a +2 inherent bonus to one ability.
Euryale - -1 penalty to all saving throws henceforth.

A bodyguard, two +1 inherent bonuses (probably Int and Cha) and a +1 inherent to Dex from the book, along with being level 10 and having a bodyguard and a Wish...but this time I fight two Dread Wraiths instead of one. This could get ugly, unless I decide to take 10 levels of Favored Soul and choose the 3rd level spell that makes me immune to ability damage/drain.

Drawing 3:

1. Fool - Lose 10,000 XP and draw again.
1a. Euryale - Permanent -1 penalty on all saving throws. Not my day.
2. Void - Psyche trapped elsewhere. Draw no more cards.

And yet, the DoMT is still one of my favorite artifacts. I loves me some randomness.

I declare 3 cards:

First draw: Balance... so I'm LE now
Second: Throne... Yay! I'm influential!
Third: The Void... Aww!

So let's see, I'm now smooth-talking, soulless, and LE. Looks like I've got a future career in politics!

Let's see if I can do better a second time:

Draw 1: Knight: Score! I has a bodyguard!
Draw 2: Key: And I roll up a +4 Flaming Burst Scimitar. Very cool (worth 72,315 gp, wonder how much that is in USD)
Draw 3: The Fates: Hmmm... I this has definite potential for the next time I run across a situation that can't be handled by my new fire-y sword and bodyguard.

That was significantly better than the last draw.

Okay, so I'm trying this again. Declaring 5 card (WHAT? WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME?!).

1) 2 of spades; Balance. I must change alignment instantly. I think I might be neutral good, so a radically different alignment would be... chaotic neutral? Yeah, I'm chaotic neutral now! Ultimate freedom GO!

2) Two of hearts; Gem. Well, thank you very much sir, I'll take those 50 gems in this bag right here!

3) Joker without trademark (or in fact red, but I'm counting it as such because the effect is beneficial); Jester. Uh, yeah. I'm not sure how xp works for me, on account of me being, y'know, real? But provided it did SOMEthing good, I'd rather pick it over the risk for Skull or something.

4) 2 of clubs; Skull. The irony here is not lost on me.

5) Ace of hearts; The fates. I CHOOSE TO AVOID THE SITUATION WITH THE DREAD WRAITH!

In the end, I'm a rich guy with double morals who might possibly be better at his job than he was before, or just gained a few levels of a character class. It definitely could be worse!

Three draws declared.

1st draw: Jack of Hearts. Gain services of a 4th level fighter. Spiffy.

2nd draw: Joker (no trademark). +10k XP and two more draws. :smallamused:

3rd draw: King of Clubs. Soul trapped elsewhere. :sigh:

Yup, that's almost exactly representative of my normal luck.

OK that monster is Cthulu......

For mine I declared 3 cards.

Balance Eech. Could be worse
Key Woot!
Donjon. Probably the creature which lost the item from draw 2.

Here's a question for all of you. It's easy to suggest that our characters would draw from this deck, but who would draw from this thing knowing it's possible consequences?

Lets try this again: 20 Cards Declared

Comet - Defeat the next monster you meet to gain one level.
Rogue - One of your friends turns against you.
Ruin - Immediately lose all wealth and real property.
Vizier - Know the answer to your next dilemma.
Balance - Change alignment instantly.
Idiot - Lose 4 Intelligence (permanent drain). You may draw again.

So I have nothing, my friend hates me, i've become evil and lost intelligence. Well since I'm sure that I've become cliché lets keep going.

Donjon - You are imprisoned

Well that went well, I'm not worried since I'll get out (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SealedEvilInACan).

I love how people think that if you're Imprisoned (As the spell, it actually sends you to some sort of jail. No.

http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/imprisonment.htm

Sucks to be YOU.

Anyways, I actually own the deck of cards the guy who started this thread mentioned, so I think I'll draw from there! I'll try three times; drawing 3, then 1, then 4. Let's do it!

Try 1
Card 1: Gem! Um...let's go with twenty-five pieces of jewelry. Less to carry around.
Card 2: Jester. Ummm...I'm think I'm gonna go TEN THOUSAND experience.
Card 3: Balance. Great. According to the online alignment tests, I'm lawful good! So I'm now chaotic evil (Said in evil voice).

Awesome. Another low-level BBEG running around. Just what we need!

Try 2
Card 1: Vizier. Know the answer to my next dilemma.

Nifty.

Try 3! Dun dun DUN.
Card 1: Talons. Lose my NON-EXISTENT magic items. Oh NO!
Card 2: Fool. Lose ten thousand experience and draw another card. Oh no, I'm now down to being...well...level one. Darn. ~Snaps fingers.~
Card 3: Idiot. Damn! Okay, only 2. Not so terrible. DUUUR.
Card 4: Vizier. Again! Okay, that helps with my being RETARDED now.
Card 5: Rogue. Lose a friend. Eh. I have a high Charisma, I can get more.

Well, the first two were all right. That last one sucked.

I love how people think that if you're Imprisoned (As the spell, it actually sends you to some sort of jail. No.

http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/imprisonment.htm

Sucks to be YOU.

Imprisonment:
When you cast imprisonment and touch a creature, it is entombed in a state of suspended animation (see the temporal stasis spell) in a small sphere far beneath the surface of the earth. The subject remains there unless a freedom spell is cast at the locale where the imprisonment took place. Magical search by a crystal ball, a locate object spell, or some other similar divination does not reveal the fact that a creature is imprisoned, but discern location does. A wish or miracle spell will not free the recipient, but will reveal where it is entombed. If you know the target’s name and some facts about its life, the target takes a -4 penalty on its save.

There is a way out. Either my former friend will let me out on accident (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NiceJobBreakingItHero), or someone else will so they will have to confront me.

I declare I am drawing five cards.

1:Flames. So now God hates me. Ouch.
2:Throne. People like my now, and I get some property. Sweet.
3:Moon. Wishes, very handy.
4:Donjon. Not so much fun. Maybe I can get out with a wish.
5:Fool. So now I'm a wimp as well. Oh well, I draw again.
6:Knight. Awesome, He can bust me outta prison.

End result: People like me, and a get a body gaurd plus some property, but I end up a fugitive from the law. I can live with that.

I declare three cards

Ace of Hearts: Avoid a situation...

Jack of Clubs: Ahh... Dread Wraith... Wait, I avoid having to defeat him, woo hoo!

King of Diamonds: 50,000 xp! And a... Carpet of Flying!

So, I'm tenth level and have a flying carpet. Why can't I roll like this in a real game?

lightningcat
2009-11-07, 08:19 PM
Draw 5 cards.

1) Skull - A dread wraith appears. Treat this creature as an unturnable undead. The character must fight it alone—if others help, they get dread wraiths to fight as well. If the character is slain, she is slain forever and cannot be revived, even with a wish or a miracle.
2) Balance - The character must change to a radically different alignment. If the character fails to act according to the new alignment, she gains a negative level.
3) Fates - This card enables the character to avoid even an instantaneous occurrence if so desired, for the fabric of reality is unraveled and respun. Note that it does not enable something to happen. It can only stop something from happening or reverse a past occurrence. The reversal is only for the character who drew the card; other party members may have to endure the situation.
4) Key - The magic weapon granted must be one usable by the character. It suddenly appears out of nowhere in the character’s hand.
5) Throne - The character becomes a true leader in people’s eyes. The castle gained appears in any open area she wishes (but the decision where to place it must be made within 1 hour).

My luck is as usual backwards.

I actually own a Tarot deck, so let's draw... 3 cards.

1st pull: Idiot (Two of Pentacles). Lose 1d4 INT and may draw again.
extra pull: Balance (Justice). Radical alignment shift. Let's say... to Lawful Evil.
2nd pull: Comet (Two of Swords). Defeat next monster singlehanded to instantly gain a level.
3rd pull: Ruin (The Tower). Lose all wealth and possessions.

.... so yeah, not very good luck on that one.

I too will draw three cards.

Draw 1: ace of diamonds - Know the answer to your next dilemma. Okay, cool.
Draw 2: king of diamonds - Gain beneficial medium magic item and 50,000 XP. Kay, sweet.
Draw 3: queen of clubs - Enmity between me and an outsider. :smalleek: I think the answer to my next dilemma is, "I'm screwed either way."

Edit: Rolling randomly (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/dice/dice.htm) for my medium item as per the DMG, I get a scroll with Arcane Sight, Tongues, and Neutralize poison. :smallsigh: So I will be able to speak with the evil outsider who hates me, and I will know that he is magic. Maybe I can hoc it somewhere.

1.Gem I take the 25 jewelry

4.The Void Oh Shi- (The Fates say it never happend)
4b. The Star (+2 Intelligence ftw)
5. Throne (+6 diplomacy and a small keep)

:smallfrown:

I'm going to go play sticks.

Realms of Chaos

*Cracks knuckles and prays*

I'll draw 4

1. Ace of Hearts - The Fates
2. 2 of Diamonds - Comet
3. 2 of Spades - Balance
4. Ace of Diamonds - Vizier

All in all, not half bad. I get out of one bad situation scot free, I learn how to work out another problem, I'll gain a level if I beat someone up, and my alignment is... chaotic evil...:smallconfused:

Well, almost perfect.

Edit: Since the fates are protecting me, another 4 cards couldn't hurt...
1. 2 of Diamonds - Comet
2. Ace of Spaces - Donjon
3. Joker (no trademark) - Jester
4. Jack of Hearts - Knight

Wow. I just hopped up to 5th level, will hop to 7th after next encounter, have a loyal knight at my side, and imprisonment canceled out by the fates. Oh, and I still have the knowledge of how to escape my next predicament.

Well, one more draw couldn't hurt.
1. 2 of Hearts - Gem

Yay. Riches.

Drew 3 more just now
1. Jester
2. Euryale
3. Star

I am Charismatic, level 6, and take a -1 penalty to all saves. Still not bad.

Taking a risk: drawing three more...
1. Jester. again.
2. Balance
3. The Sun

Level 13, I have a helm of brilliance, and I am back the way I was. I know when to stop.

Let's see now... Draw 5 cards.

- Ace of hearts (The Fates): Very nice. I can use this to reverse a nonbeneficial card in the future, if necessary.
- Two of spades (Balance): Would probably turn me chaotic neutral, or chaotic evil, arguably. Going to use the fates card to reverse this.
- Queen of clubs (Flames): Eesh. Not nice.
- King of Spades (Ruin): Yargh. There goes my wealth.
- Two of Clubs (Idiot): :smallsigh: Going to draw one more.

- Jack of Clubs (Death): Well, that's it for me. I'm dead.

Platinius
2009-11-08, 07:41 AM
Drew 5 cards

Jack of Hearts - Knight, get a bodyguard
Joker black - Jester, 10k exp or 2 extra cards, take the exp, am now 4th level
Ace of Hearts - the fates, get a free exit out of one dangerous situation
Two of clubs - idiot, lose 2 int but draw a new card at the end
Jack of Spades - Rogue, one friend turns against me
King of Diamonds - benefitial monderous Item (take the book of permanent wisdom growth +4 so that I never play again with my fate) and 50k exp

So, I get a bodyguard who might turn against me but than I can use my free out of problems card should I be unable to handle the situation, everything becomes harder to understand but if I was able to handle the traitor problem I'll save my intellect here, so in the end I am a hell lot more experienced and I get a magical tricket. Not a bad deal, not bad at all, though it was unfair to begin with, I am a very lucky guy.

So I hunt down the deck of many things again (using my assassin mask and eleven levels of worldly power), feeling braver this time, I'll draw seven cards.

Idiot: Lose 2 INT. Not crippling, basically taking away what I gained from leveling up last time. I'll pass on the extra draw though
Ruin: Lose all wealth. At least I still have power? And my skull mask.
Vizier: That's handy.
Flames: Well. A demon or devil hates me personally. That sucks.
Sun: Again?! Well that puts me up to 15th level. Considering I'd probably be going with Bard, I'd officially be out-rocking Hendrix at this point. Got a Broom of Flying too.
Star: That'll replace my lost INT. Or if I'm feeling intelligent enough, I'll put that in Charisma.
Key: Get a Major magic weapon? Not really a fighter, but *roll* but I got a luck blade with two wishes. That'll come in handy when a devil randomly attacks me I guess.

So I'm a 15th level bard with a broom of flying, a killer skull mask, and a lucky short sword that grants me two wishes. I can either be a super villain, a creepy hero, or an epic rockstar. I'll go with the third choice I think.
Especially because if I'm on stage when the devil shows up to fight, it'll make one heck of a show...

Somehow escaping from the "I have no mouth and I must scream" moment a bit earlier, I'll draw three cards:

- The Vizier. I can draw upon supernatural wisdom to instantly divine the answer to any question I want. Once.

- Balance. "Weighed in the balance and found wanting". Oh, and because this is an AD&D deck, if I don't stick to that alignment I instead receive Judgement. Which equals irrevocable destruction. And, from the way it's written, applies if I manage to draw another Balance or Wish my alignment back to normal.

- Star. Woohoo!

Not too bad. Now I have to roll to see what alignment I become:

3. Lawful Evil.

OK, let's retcon that and try again:

- Rogue. I don't have any underlings, so that means a powerful community or religious figure now hates me. Adventure hook land, here I come!

- Euryale. So my save vs. Petrification is now what, 21?

- Donjon. But apparently, AD&D gives me the choice as to whether this means "I have no mouth and I must scream" or being imprisoned by something else.

Hmmm... difficult decision.

Comet - Defeat the next monster you meet to gain one level.

2 of spades, jack of spades, queen of spades.

That's Balance, the Rogue, and the Euryale.

So I change alignment, one of my former friends turns against me (big surprise, I changed alignment!) and I take a penalty on all saving throws.

Yowzer.

Well, if I came across a Deck of Many Things in real life, I would definitely not touch it, but what the heck, here goes. Three cards being pulled.

Knight - cool. He may come in handy some day, though I have no idea what I'd do with him now.
Idiot - Aargh. Lost 5 Intelligence. That's not good.
Moon - 2 wishes. Well, I can reverse my Intelligence drain, at least.

So, all in all, pretty nice. I would not risk it, though. My soul's too valuable to gamble with.

Sure, let's give this a shot. I'll draw three cards.

Knight. I get a bodyguard, cool! I hope I don't have to feed him.

Idiot. Doh! And I'm pretty sure INT is my highest stat, too. At least, it was. Damn.

Star. Hm. I could counter-act my int-loss. Or I could get more buff... Or most likely more CHA. CHA is cool 8)

Edit: Oh yeah I get to draw again because of the idiot one. ...Sure. Got a throne. Sweet, I'm a smooth-talker now. And I'll just sell the keep and move into an apartment. And my job in collections will be MUCH easier with that nice diplomacy boost 8)

Comet - Not bad

Throne - Hello, fancy mansion
Jester - I'll take xp
Idiot - No draw, but not too bad

Draw 7
Sun - Nice
Throne - Very nice
Ruin - By keep/magic item
Idiot - no draw
Idiot - since I'm an idiot I'll draw again
Key - Yes
Euryale - Darn
Gem - Money

Well, that was pleasant.

I wish for:

Wings of Flying.
An at-will item of Prestidigitation.

Now, I never have to eat, bathe, or worry about transportation ever again. I don't have to pay for food, gas, car insurance, or any of that nonsense, and I even get to sleep for fewer hours each day. Thanks, Deck of Many Things!

Sounds fun: I'll draw 7:

Queen of Clubs- Demon or Devil is mad at me
Ace of Clubs- All of my 0 magic items disappear
Jack of Clubs- Defeat Dread Wraith or be forever destroyed. Seeing as I haven't leveled up or anything yet, I'm dead.

I've died once..... I'm doing this again:
1. Moon: 3 wishes? Sweet. Let's save those to get me out of bad situations.
2. Talons: All of my 0 magic items gone.
3. Sun- Gain beneficial medium wondrous item and 50,000 XP. YES! I'm now level 10 (Commoner 1/Wizard 9) and have some kickass item. Rolling it: Amulet of Natraul Armor +4.
4. Fool: Another draw and down to lv. 9
5. Comet: I can probably kill my next monster with my Amulet and my spells. Back to lv. 10
6. Balance- Now I'm Chaotic Neutral. I'm sad.
7.The Hanged Man- Up to level 11. Sweet.
(Fool Bonus): Vizer: Know the answer to my next dilema.

So...... I'm now a Chaotic Neutral Commoner 1/Wizard 10 with an Amulet of Natrual Armor +4 and 3 wishes. Oh and I also know the answer to my next dilema. Cool.

3) Moon - You are granted 1 wishes.
Yay, pizza!
4) Knight - Gain the service of a 4th-level fighter.
Hey, I got a buddy.
5) Donjon - You are imprisoned Draw ENDS.
Did I at least get to finish my pizza?

I draw one (thrice).
a) The Fates - Avoid any situation you chose... once.
That should come in handy.
b) Euryale - -1 penalty to all saving throws henceforth.
Crudtastic.
cA) Fool - Lose 10,000 experience points and you must draw again.
Eh, it isn't like I've got any XP to lose.
cB) Sun - Gain beneficial medium wondrous item and 50,000 XP. Stone horse (destrier)

Card 1: Comet
Card 2: Talons
Card 3: Sun (gain harp of charming)
Card 4: Sun (gain Pearl of Power 5th)
Card 5: Jester (XP, please)

Okay, so I lost my helm of brilliance and got two less valuable items instead. I am currently a Commoner 1/Factotum 18 who will grow 3 levels after I kill a cockroach or something. I'm rich, Charismatic, Learn the answer to my next quandary, have a knight... and a -1 penalty to saving throws.

Awesome.

I drew one card... out of a normal deck of 52... it was the king of clubs, aka void.

Okay. The devil I kill has a horde, and it's got another deck of many things in it.

Because I apparently have NO self control, even when clearly way, way far ahead in the game, I'm gonna go ahead and draw 3 more cards.

1) The moon. Really? AWESOMESWEET. I've got a luck blade allready, now I get, *roll* 4? FOUR WISHES? Amazing! I bet I'll pay for that.
2) The Fool. Loose 10,000 XP and I must draw again. That's bad, but...it could be worse? At the level I'm at, losing 10,000 XP won't even de-level me.
2b) Euryale. -1 penalty on all saving throws? I scoff at you, deck of many things. I'm allready 15th level, my saving throws are so far above a normal persons that a -1 to me is nothing!
3) Throne. A +6 to diplomacy checks and a small keep.

APPARENTLY the deck of many things responds well to verbal abuse. Must keep this in mind for further testing...

I love all the people who're saying that the 'radical alignment shift' turns them evil :P

Actually, in my case, I assumed both times that I'd started out True Neutral and then rolled to pick a new alignment.

Apparently I am Destined For Evil.

I love this magic item, got ahold of one in the first 3rd edition game I ever played...it didn't end well :-P (My half-orc barbarian hit -4 cha, yay coma time.)

So now for my go, I declare four draws-

Fool- Loose 10k xp and draw again. Ok so I either go into negative xp and become a non-entity (which I'm fairly certain can't happen) or I stay right around 0 xp, works for me. And drawing again, that could be good...

Star- Let's see +2 to any one stat? Let's see to Con would make it so I really don't ever get sick. But no I rolled well on Con, then it's a toss up between Int and Wis. I think I have to go with Wisdom, maybe I can ditch my glasses now.

Ruin- Well crud. There goes all of my gaming books, my reading books, my computer (which begs the question how am I typing this? :smalltongue:) and my clothes. This one really sucks. I don't even want to think about how much money I lost when my gaming books went *poof*.

Key- Sweet, at least this happened after I drew Ruin. Let me see what it ends up as... a +3 brilliant energy speed flaming bastard sword of mighty cleaving and defending. Well it's very cool but I don't know that I'll ever really use unless someone attacks me. In which case I kinda feel sorry for them if I manage to hit.

Gem- Alright, I guess the Powers That Be are trying to make up for giving me Ruin. I get 25 pieces of jewelry. That should buy me back my gaming books and then some.

And my fifth and final draw thanks to the Fool is-

Throne- Cool, a +6 to Diplomacy and a small keep in central NY is very nice. And with the money gleaned from the Gem card I should be able to afford the taxes, heating and electricity for the thing as well. With the bonus to Diplomacy I should even be able to smooth talk my way into a halfway decent job as well.

So I ended up with a higher Wisdom. Then loosing all my worldly possessions (though I'm unsure how this works out with jointly owned stuff, do they go away as well or is it assumed that because they aren't just yours ownership reverts to the other party?). Then to make up for it I get a small castle, a bloody lightsaber, all the charm of a successful used car salesman (without the grease) and a bunch of expensive jewelry. Not bad all in all in my opinion. At least I didn't draw Donjon or anything.

Edit: Rolled on the major magic items table instead of the magic weapons table. Whoops.

2 draws- Flames and Vizier. So I get an outsider mad at me, then immediately find out how to beat the snot out of it. I...guess I win?

I declare that I will be drawing 5 cards.

Jester: 10,000 XP? Hello, level 7!

Fates: Woo, I get to...uh...have something not happen, I guess.

Star: That's +2 to INT, please. I'm brilliant!

Gem: I'll take that 50,000gp in jewelry, thanks. Easier to carry than gems.

Euryale: Aw. -1 to saving throws. I'll take it and save my Fates.

-------------

So. Gained 6 levels and 50,000gp, with +2 INT and an "undo" button in my pocket. And I'm slightly worse at saves. I like it.

Ha, this thread is very cool.

I went for broke and chose to draw 6 cards. I drew the Throne and gained a small kingdom, the Talons which then vaporized all the magic items that I failed to possess. Euryale forever cursed me, and the Vizier to answer my next question. Ruin then snatched my kingdom away, and with my final card... the Key granted me a major magic weapon.

So I ended up with:
- +6 Diplomacy
- The Vorpal Sword of Godkicking and Invisibility
- An answer to a dilemma
- And a -1 to all my checks henceforth.

I've had worse luck.

I've already found out what my luck would have been (Void), but thanks to this thread I threw my PC's a Deck in our last session. They had unbelievably good luck and are now even more powerful than before. I don't remember the exact card draws, but as an example, the Paladin now has a +4 bastard sword, gained three levels, and got a Manual of Gainful Exercise +4. Yay ruptured game balance!

I draw two. I get Balance and Rogue. So I change alignment and one of my friends turns against me. Wunderbar.

Vizier - Know the answer to your next dilemma.
Key - Gain a major magic weapon.
The Fates - Avoid any situation you choose . . . once.

Sweet, two Deus Ex Machinas and a kick awesome new weapon. Best borderline suicidal idea I ever had.

Draw 3.

I got...

Balance- I'll change to CG.
Rogue- I know the perfect friend, at least I hope its him...gives me an excuse...
Key- Rolled 70, 64, 99, 44...73, 85, 21... Gah...a +5 unholy brilliant energy mighty cleaving bastard sword....this is gonna hurt me....fine I'll balance myself LE....

Ooooh... a red lightsaber.

How evil.

I draw six times.

1) The Throne. +6 diplomact and a keep.
2) Talons. All magic items immediately disappear
3) Moon. 1d4 wishes
4) Star. +2 to an ability score
5) Fool. lose 10,000 xp and must draw again
5) Gem. 25 pieces of Jewelry
6) The Star.

All in all that selection was made of win. I have no magic items or levels to lose.

While we were discussing this I wanted to share an experience with the deck of many things we had once. Party of six people. Each person decides to take one draw. I don't remember exactly what was drawn, but there were only 2 positive effects out of them. the others were ravaged by the deck. I think we had a Donjon and a Skull in there. The last person took his draw and gained one wish. 'I wish we never found this damned deck'

*poof*

Drawing.. 3..

Throne! YAY.. A small keep in Israel, in my lame city.. Great..
Star.. Hmm.. Wisdom! I think it will help with my laziness..
Rogue.. Screw you!

5 more.. Donjon, right at the beginning..

Another try:
Vizier, yay.. Talons. Pha! I laugh at you! Jester. XP thank you! Fool.. Bye bye XP.. Throne! Rogue..

So.. I use the Vizier to get out of the Rogue situation.. And I end up with getting only the benefits of the Throne.

Ace of Spades: Donjon - You are imprisoned
Ace of Hearts: The Fates - Avoid any situation you choose... once.

I'd like to avoid the imprisonment?

...gained nothing. T_T

Not really true, because as soon as you draw the Donjon you can't draw again, so that fate can't be avoided. If you draw The Fates before the Donjon then sure, otherwise.. bye bye

I actually did get the Fates first, but I put them in that order to say "I'm preventing the imprisonment"

Just clearing that up.
