Are all giant worms a reference to Dune, or are there any other legit stories that feature them?

It is a clever play on words, people like to pronouce doom on this or that. Plus this could be the end for our little friend. :smallwink:

Tremors (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tremors). It is excellent.
EDIT: Ooh, and by following that link I discovered there's also a "real life" example (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mongolian_Death_Worm).

It also helps when you need seven degrees of Kevin Bacon with giant death worms.

Hell yeah it is!
The series was good too; shame it was canceled.
I always thought 'Tremors' was a deliberate reference to Lovecraft's 'dholes', whose primary attack is 'earthquake'.
But I agree, it was a fine film.
