so is there anything that would keep a character from using a greatsword and armor spike or unarmed strikes for two weapon fighting?
and how would the strength bonus apply to the great sword?

1.5 for 2 handed weapon. 0.5 for spikes.

Only what you'd expect: the feat investment, and the -2 attack penalty.

Don't forget to throw in an animated shield, or a shield ring or something similar, so you can play two-handed/two-weapon-fighting/sword-and-board styles all at once.

Be a multi-armed race and TWF THW!

Even better, play a Thri-Kreen Cavestalker, and quad-wield spiked chains or scorpion chains. It comes in two flavours: Dervish and Telflammar Shadowlord.

Diopsids can dual-wield 2h handed weapons at no penalty, if you want to make the title literal, btw.

Not true. They have a non-light weapon in their off-hand, causing a penalty.

Ah, really? Hmm. I thought they could. Oh well.

Let's go with an enlarged (custom spell: enlarge monstruous humanoid), dual wieldging (twf) huge (monkey grip) greatswords Thri-Kreen!

-6/-6 penalty, but circustancial bonus of +8 in intimidate just for the awesome sight!

IIRC There is an elf prc that lets you treat a double weapon as a two handed weapon. So there would be your twf and 2hf for the purposes of pounce, str damage and more importantly power attack.

I think strongarm braces are better in any case then monkey grip, and as they don't stack, there is no reason to take monkey grip unless you want to free the slot up..

Spending only half as much gold on each of two weapons and the -2 to hit evens out the benefits of THF + armor spikes. It's do-able though, and those armor spikes come in handy when you grapple.

So I think we're up to THF + TWF + SAB + spiked chain tripper + grappler now? Might as well throw in disarm and sunder for good measure. The feats aren't 100% essential if you don't think it's worth it to focus on the last two, since you won't provoke AoO's with a reach weapon. Oh, and let's do all this from on top of a mount.

As others have stated, it works, but there is really no reason to do so, since the return on investment is pretty cruddy. There are many more efficient ways to get more attacks (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=7066595), and have Power Attack apply to them.

I like the 2HW/armor spikes combo for Skullcrusher Ogres (NPCs), since they get TWF as a bonus feat. Throw in a pair of Gloves of the Balanced hand for ITWF.

Couldn't be viable use tactics like these?

- Damage with TH, and use off-"hand" kicks to trip enemies not died for damage (touch attacks, so...)

- Damage with TH, but later: first, debuff with a swif-action poisoned (there is a feat) armor blade/spike. Drop enemy con, and then drop its HP.

- Damage with TH, and off hand stun (like with snapkick).

Ascetic Hunters (Ranger/Monk hybrid) are good at this. They get free TWF and their entire body as an off-hand weapon. Get a Glaive/Halberd and take Improved Trip; apply Potions of Enlarge Person where needed. You are now awesome.

The first one seems do-able, and maybe the last one. The first would also explain a whole lot about Star Wars episodes I-III. The nice thing is that if your target can't be tripped, then you don't need to take the -2 to hit with your first attack. You're giving up roughly 15% of your hits with that -2, btw, but the possibility of tripping and getting a free attack on the trip for the cost of 2 feats seems well worth it. Additional TWF feats are optinoal.

that's entirely dependent on your to-hit and the targets AC.
