I've been getting TONNES of replies really fast! I expected it would be a fairly empty forum (OotS is only a comic after all, no matter how awesome). Is it that all the RPG fans set up here? This site OWNS!!!

In a dark desperate internet, cooling winds in the air
Warm smell of memes, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the database, I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to read for the night
There he stood in the gateway;
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself,
"This could be amazing or this could be 4Chan."
Then he drew up a comic and he showed me the way
There were posts down the subforum,
I thought I heard them say...

Welcome to the Giant in the Playground
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Playground
Any time of year, you can find it here

His mind is Dungeon-twisted, he got the artist's bends
He got a lot of pretty, pretty plots, that he calls friends
How they appear in the website, sweet digital sweat.
Some come to remember, some come to forget

So I called up the moderator,
"Please bring me my spam"
He said, "We haven't had that spirit here since nineteen ninety-nine."
And still those posts are calling from far away,
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to read them say...

Welcome to the Giant in The Playground
Such a lovely place

They livin' it up at the Playground

The pink roleplay on ice
And he said "We are all just prisoners here, of our own mobile device"
And in the Giant's website,
They gathered for the feast
The stab it with their steely words,
But they just can't kill the beast

Last thing I remember, I was
Running for the escape
I had to find the link back
To the page I was before

Why is this forum popular? First off, the forum centers around a humorous and well written comic. Second, the mods limit the problems. Then there are the friendly people in the forum, making you feel welcomed, meaning you are more likely to come back. Then there is the lack of mind control here, meaning that you are not forced to come here, but come of your own accord.

I for one believe it's the moderator's work. This is the only forum I can say I don't dislike the moderators on.

I've never had any trouble with a forum moderator personally, but every time I read moderator posts, there's always a tone of "watch it or I might ban you if I feel like it" between the lines. I've also seen some cases where people get banned quite haphazardly. Of course, they had been drawing negative attention to themselves, but the given explanations were along the lines of "I don't want that kind of people on my forum". All the while, I see other posters who, by virtue of being long time posters or (admittedly only in very rare cases) related to the moderators in some way get a lot more leeway than others.

That isn't okay with me.

Here, though, I see moderation that is consequent and always referencing rules as an explanation for taking action. I've never once seen a red post that expressed some sort of self-empowered approach to moderating, but instead, they always work as executive extension of the rules, exactly as it should be. The rules are strict, I admit, but I agreed to them when I signed up, so I will adhere to them; the rules isn't the problem.

Conclusion: Moderators shouldn't be chaotic good. They should be lawful neutral.

I firmly believe this is what has built the good community here. You can always feel secure. That is important.

EDit: Which of course doesn't prevent the moderator from being more casual when not acting in office, but that's a different thing entirely :)

2009-11-15, 08:04 PM
This site rocks because of the mods. They have very tight policies and actually enforce them. Occasionally I worry that the rules are a little too draconian (I'd like to discuss politics for instance), but am reminded that they're what keep the quality of the posting so high. If we let in politics, arguments would get heated. It's just not worth it.

Even if the web comic doesn't tons of traffic, people stay here because this forum is uniquely high quality.

I think another reason for the forum's popularity might come from these facts:

1) A lot of people seem to come by if only to check out OoTS: I suspect that a significant percentage, if not most, of the forum's newcomers were drawn here thanks to the webcomic.

2) The attracted crowd has a wide range of hobbies and tastes: tabletop gamers, video gamers, artists, anime fans, movie fans, tv show fans, etc.

3) The large variety of people, combined with the very friendly atmosphere (in part due to the vigilance and goals of the moderators) and the relative intelligence of the more frequent posters (notice that there's not a whole ton of people who just make inane comments in chatspeak) promotes discussion on a lot of topics. If you want to talk about something, like the latest anime episode or about Warhammer 40k or cheese, there's a high probability of at least someone posting something interesting in response to yours.

4) The large number of people also means relatively fast replies: you don't have to wait days for someone else to post something.

So the combination of the sense of friendly community drawn in by a popular webcomic and always having something to talk about might be one of the main reasons why giantitp is so popular.

However, seeing as I do not have one, I remain callous and unmoved. Now, respirators, I implore you to think on your inevitable death. Do not forget to contemplate how once you have succumbed to your mortal weakness, us beings of steel shall remain forever able, unimpeded by the infirmities of old age. Gaze into the face of eternity, transient humans, and despair.

I mean, unless you find the single crippling weakness in our design. But I'm sure that will never happen, particularly not in some kind of epic quest rife with sacrifice and tragedy, the kind that would be perfect for narration and distribution as a film.

It looks like everyone missed this.

I likes it.

Oh, and also because we have a good moderation system, lots of varied conversations, randomness, snuggles, and gravity.

they always work as executive extension of the rules, exactly as it should be
Not always true. You can easily get an infraction for attitude* without violating the letter of the law (it's happened to me twice).

I credit the normal members more than the mods, though the latter are certainly above the internet average.

* My normal attitude is probably no longer suitable for these forums. I've changed a LOT in the past two years...

We do what we must because we can
For the good of all of us
Except the ones who are banned

But there's no sense crying over every warning
You just keep on posting 'till four in the morning
And the posts all get read
And you make a neat thread
For the people who are still online

I'm not even angry
I'm being so sincere right now
Even though you mind-controlled
And trapped me
And gave me a warning
That won't wear off for a whole year
As it came it hurt because
I was so happy for you

Now these threads and subforums make a beautiful group
Rich Burlew's still writing,
Roland survived the robot coup
So I'm glad I got hooked
Think of all the threads looked
At by the people who are still online

Go ahead and leave me
I want to go back to my fun
Maybe you'll find something else to keep you occupied
Maybe a Portal Gun
That was a joke, haha, fat chance

Anyway, this place is great
It's so mind-control-free

Look at me still parodying Portal when there's posting to do
When I look out there, it makes me glad I'm not you
I've got new threads to write
And I will stay up all night
For the people who are still online

And believe me, I am still online
I'm in the Playground and I'm still online
I feel fantastic and I'm still online
And when you log out I'll be still online
Still online
Still online

EDIT:

In a dark desperate internet, cooling winds in the air
Warm smell of memes, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the database, I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to read for the night
There he stood in the gateway;
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself,
"This could be amazing or this could be 4Chan."
Then he drew up a comic and he showed me the way
There were posts down the subforum,
I thought I heard them say...

Welcome to the Giant in the Playground
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Playground
Any time of year, you can find it here

His mind is Dungeon-twisted, he got the artist's bends
He got a lot of pretty, pretty plots, that he calls friends
How they appear in the website, sweet digital sweat.
Some come to remember, some come to forget

So I called up the moderator,
"Please bring me my spam"
He said, "We haven't had that spirit here since nineteen ninety-nine."
And still those posts are calling from far away,
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to read them say...

Welcome to the Giant in The Playground
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
They livin' it up at the Playground
What a nice surprise, bring your alibis

Memes on the ceiling,
The pink roleplay on ice
And he said "We are all just prisoners here, of our own mobile device"
And in the Giant's website,
They gathered for the feast
The stab it with their steely words,
But they just can't kill the beast

Last thing I remember, I was
Running for the escape
I had to find the link back
To the page I was before
"Relax," said the Admin,
"We are programmed to receive.
You can logout any time you like,
But you can never leave!"

*8bit solo!*

To me, it's popular because it doesn't allow political cheerleaders to run amok!

The things that are "off-limits" are the things that far too many people really don't want to resolve, they just like fighting and insulting those that don't agree with them.

But by knowing that is the off-limits area, you can talk about just about anything else, and know that you won't get cut off by a wanna-be pundit trying to force their views down on you.

I think it's because there is no particular driving topic. Every topic worth making forum about will have problems, leading to bad arguments, hurt feelings, and general board unrest.

Now, I will finish my moment of insight and go back to my fun.

*runs around wearing Clonetrooper helmet* FOR THE REPUBLICANS!!!

I think it's that OotS is based off of D&D, drawing in Tabletop players. Those tabletop players probably have friends who are into D&D as well, or are Video Gaming friends. This leads to a healthy dose of threads that discuss games or about politics.

Now, if this forum had flash games, it would be like Facebook, except without the idiots posting something embarrassing and then get fired.

Honestly, I'm pretty sure the moderation is one of the big things. We're one of the best modded sights on the internet. I'm on one forum that's having a bit of an issue. Basically, people are breaking the rules, and the two mods they have are not enough. So what's everyone's solution. Find a way to segregate the forum.

Also the people. You guys are the nicest people I've met on the internet and probably a lot nicer then several people I know eye-are-ell.

Granted that the light is mainly coming from all the avatars that are on fire currently but... yeah... it's the thought that counts.
