Just minutes after the end of my previous competition, I am now posting another one, with a twist: it's time to vote for your favorite movie! But first, nomination, and before that, the rules:

Any poster may nominate up to ten (10) movies. To avoid ambiguity, each nominee must be more than one hour in length (not including commercial breaks). If there have been more than one version of the movie you nominate (not including Director’s Cut versions and similar), please include the year the movie was released in your nomination. Nomination will stop once 128 movies (no more, no less) have been nominated. Voting will then begin.

My nominations:

The Dark Knight
Starship Troopers
The Princess Bride
The Bourne Ultimatum
Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
Terminator 2: Judgement Day
Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
The Blues Brothers
Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl

Inglourious Basterds (Mmmm... Tarantino)
Kill Bill Volume 1 (Mmmm... Uma Thurman)
Kill Bill Volume 2 (Mmmm... Tarantino AND Uma Thurman)
The Big Lebowski (One of the few movies that gets better every time you watch it.)
Iron Man (I call Robert Downy Jr. "Bobert")
Million Dollar Baby (One of the saddest movies I've ever seen. Although it fails logic if you know enough about boxing, it makes me bawl every time)
District 9 (A wonderful, innovative, excellent science fiction movie. Truly, science fiction at its best. I would, however, like to punch anybody who said it's funny in the face. Repeatedly. Many times over.)
South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut (Everything in this movie is a brilliant joke on many levels. I once wrote an assignment, showing the movie as a Holocaust movie. I got an F, but it was a lot of fun)
The Departed (I could watch it a billion times)
Rear Window (The first version, not the remake. Possibly the only movie I liked even when I was forced to study it)
Honorable Mention: The Producers (1968). This is more a slap in the face to Nazis than Inglourious Basterds could ever be, it's hysterical, and the only reason it isn't on the list is because I haven't seen it in a while and I'm not 100% sure it could hold up.

Man, there's not much point, I don't think, in me doing this. My tastes seem a little archaic for this crowd. Nonetheless I follow Roger Ebert's maxim that 'Best' lists serve only a single purpose: to get you to look at films that you might not otherwise have considered.

So, in no particular Order

1. Ran (Akira Kurosawa)
2. Ikiru (Akira Kurosawa)
3. Le Samourai (Jean-Pierre Melville)
4. Floating Weeds (Yasujiro Ozu)
5. Ugetsu (Kenji Mizoguchi)
6. The Samurai Trilogy (Hiroshi Inagaki) (and yes, I think they're really one single film)
7. The Good, the Bad, the Ugly (Sergio Leone)
8. Schindler's List (Steven Spielberg)
9. The Big Lebowski (The Cohen Brothers)
10. It's a Wonderful Life (Frank Capra)

And yes, I love me some classical Japanese Cinema. And yes, I'm okay with that.

EDIT: Apocalypse Now was already nominated. So I changed it.

That's just, like, your opinion, man...

:smalltongue:

Yes. You are right. Blame my tiny typing window and not paying attention. And for a man as big a fan of the Coens as I, that's an unforgivable error.

Or maybe this one? (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1000113/)

And that's all. Just wait a few minutes and Round 1 will begin. EDIT: It's here! Like the AI tournament, this one is divided into groups and supergroups. You each have one vote per group of four, and after this round has ended (approximately 21:10 CET November 23 2009), the winning movie in each group of four will go on to the next round and participate in another (randomized) group of four. I'd like to say that in very few of the groups I had to choose between 2 that I had seen and liked, and in way too many of them did I get the choice of 3 movies that I haven't seen, and one that I thought was unremarkable. A notable case is Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, in which I chose my final test for a movie's worth (Used after plot, enjoyment factor, cinematography, acting, direction, and general goodness), which is "Does it have Hitler doing something funny in it?"

Do people even read the thread before posting anymore?
No.
EDIT- It appears I have not read the thread either, as I was not obligated to vote in all groups. However, it is the curse of the magnificently brilliant that we have to show all other people what our opinions are, so that they will flock to them.
SECOND EDIT- It appears that my staggering brilliance was such that I had voted for two movies I liked in a single group, instead of one. I have changed it back.

And that's how we do it. I indulged in some strategic voting. I didn't vote for a few of the films I nominated because I assume that mine would have been the only vote and I'm better off supporting a candidate that actually has a chance of winning (kind of like voting Republican when you're really a Libertarian).

Wonder if it would be a good idea to shorten each round to five days instead of seven? Anyway, we are now in the endgame, which means all groups with winners are locked from further voting, leaving four groups left to be decided. Once a single point shifts the balance in favor of a movie, that group is also locked, until all four are finished and we can move on to Round 2. Note that you cannot vote again if you have already voted in one of these groups, this is not a new round.

The groups are:

Group 1:4
Zombieland [3]
Coraline [4]
The Unknown Soldier (1955) [2]
All the President's Men [1]

Group 2:4
South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut [4]

I'll be honest, I like TT better, but you have to pick from the choices given.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail
The Pythons masterpiece beats the Dude.

Supergroup 2
Pulp Fiction
Both are amazing, but I enjoy Pulp Fiction by ever so slight a degree

The Dark Knight
I'm surprised Starship Troopers made it this far, good for it though, it's a good movie. The Joker is better though.

Supergroup 3
Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes
Back When Vader was still a badass

Monty Python's Life of Brian
This one hurt to decide on, but I do love me my Monty Python

Supergroup 4
Apocalypse Now I enjoy Crusader like any other bloke, but it's Apocalypse Now. Except in humor, AN is a superior movie in every way.

Fight Club

1)Monty Python= I am a diehard Pythonian and a diehard Lotr fan. But in Lotr I preferred Two Towers to Return, while for Python no movie was better than the Holy Grail
2) The Dark Knight= Now I feel like a jerk, knocking out Strangelove for Pulp Fiction and then voting against it. This was the hardest choice, two of the most badass movies ever going head to head.
3) Empire Strikes Back= See as noted for 1, I am a Pythonian and a Star Wars geek. Of Star Wars Empire was the best, of Python it's Holy Grail.
